    So, has anyone else been watching the info in rec.models.rc about
    the dawn to dusk world-wide glider contest??
    
    I guess the goal is in each catagory to keep at least 1 plane in the
    air for the entire day.  It is a club by club event..
    
    I would think that a composite team of DECRCM folks would be allowed..
    
    Any interest in it??

  I seem to be getting enough interest wiyth the concept of reviving
the Dawn-to-Dusk challenge to ive it a try.  The contest is for glider
guiders and will differ from the last challenge in a few ways.  

  For those unfamiliar with D2D, the concept is simple:  Teams fly
gliders for a period of eight hours.  The team has to use more than
one glider and a glider must be airborne at all times.  If the glider
that is airborne touches down before the next glider is launched, the
 teams time stops at that time.  The object is to have a total time of
eight hours with the minimum amount of launches.  Each team flies the
contest at their home feild on a date predetermined by the contest
CD.  This makes it possible for teams from all over the world to
compete.  Team results can be passed via E-mail or (preferably) snail
mail with pictures.  I hope to have the contest in late April or early
May depending on your inputs.

  The changes for this year are:

	Three categories:  High-start launch, Winch-launch, and SLOPE!
	If an entrance fee is collected (no determination at this
pont) ALL of the money collected will go towards prizes.

    	I've been watching it, but I'm not sure how practical it is.
    
    I suppose if a bunch of guys want to get together for a day of glider
    guiding with the D2D kind of a secondary thing then what the heck.
    
    I just kind of suspect that there will be a whole bunch of teams that
    "manage" to get exactly 8 hours. I mean even if no one cheated, I don't
    remember seeing any limit to the number of team members you can have.
    Heck, if you have a big glider club and had 20 people willing to spend
    the day flying, you should be able to achieve that task pretty easily.
    
    Any interest around here?????????

    I'd be interested if the weather was better than the moment. I'd even
    drag out the winch. I would say we'd need 5-6 fliers to make a serious
    attempt since you need either multiple planes or a period to fast
    charge

    I would think the winch battery would be more critical. You'd probably
    need a high start to send up some floaters just to keep the time going.
    As I said earlier, the more flyers you have, the easier it would be.
    If, for example, you had 20 flyers, and figured only 3 minute flights
    per launch, you'd only be flying about once an hour. BUT, 20 launches
    per hour would kill a winch real fast. Line breaks would be another
    killer. That's why a high start to keep popping planes in the air would
    be necessary. You'd either need several batteries to keep the winch
    going, or a generator to keep the battery going.
    
    Then again, with YOUR winch, you'd also need to start with about 50
    planes to allow for attrition. 8^)

    Yeah, after I posted that last one I thought of the line snarls
    problem. Well, I'm interested in any case. Maybe we could do it at
    Acton and get all the A.S.S's out there?

 Hi Jeff!

  Thanks for the interest in the Dawn-to-Dusk Challenge (D2D)!  Here
is the information that you asked for.  I have tried to keep it as
simple as possible and welcome any suggested changes to the rules or
way things are being run.  If you have any suggestions, please let me
know.  The rules will be finalized and "written in stone" by the end
of June to make sure that everyone knows what's what.

  The reason for postponing the contest until August is to get as
much advertising as possible from the magazines and hopefully a lot
better participation.  As teams sign up I will be letting everyone
know who has entered the contest.

DAWN-TO-DUSK CHALLENGE

  The Dawn-to-Dusk Challenge is a contest that will let "glider
guiders" compete in a world wide contest from the comfort of their
own field.  It is "for fun" and I hope that amateur pilots/teams will
participate along with the more experienced glider clubs.  The name
of the game here is to participate and have fun no matter what your
experience level!!  My club only flies gliders on a very sporadic
basis and it looks like we'll have pilots standing in line to get a
chance to fly!

  The basic concept of the contest is simple:  a team of pilots and
helpers must keep a glider in the air for a period of eight hours
through a series of launches of any number of gliders.  The team that
has the least number of launches for the maximum amount of time is
declared the winning team.  The contest will be flown on August 19th,
starting at 8:00 am.  All dates and times are local time for the team
that is entering.  A backup date of 26 August will be used if the
original date is unflyable.

  Special recognition will also be given to the pilots for:

     Longest flight
     Most launches
     Best Crash?

  There is a $20.00 entrance fee for each team.  This money will be
used to cover the cost of administering the contest.  "Books" will be
available for anyone wanting to see how the money is being used.  The
contest director will not profit in any way from the funds collected
.  The entrance fee should be paid in U.S. dollars.

RULES:

  Every effort has been made to keep the rules very simple and
unrestrictive.  Any changes to these rules will be sent out via mail
(hard copy) or E-Mail.

1.  In an effort to reach as many pilots as possible I have set four
different categories for this contest: Hand Launch, High-Start Launch
, Winch Launch, and Slope.

2.  All teams should be insured in accordance with insurance policies
for their local flying field.  There are no specific insurance
requirements for this contest unless your insurance carrier requires
it.

3.  More than one plane must be used for the contest.  The maximum
number of pilots and gliders is not limited.  All planes must be
UNPOWERED gliders.

4.  The first launch of the day will be at 8:00 am on the date
established for the contest.

5.  After the original launch, a glider must be in the air at all
times.  If any glider touches down before the next one is launched,
the team's time stops at that point.  If this occurs, the team should
still report their time and number of launches.  Your team will still
be placed in the final standings.  If your team starts the contest 
and you get weathered out, your standings will be based on your times
when you stopped on that day.

6.  If your team already has an event scheduled for August 19th, you
can schedule your participation for a different date in August as 
long as you notify the contest director of your chosen date before 1
July 95.

The contest director will notify all other teams of what team is 
flying and when.

Hints:

  Having a ground crew to help with the launch systems is highly
recommended.  It is important that the launch device be ready for use
at all times.

  Be prepared if you have to change launch directions.  Relocating
winches and high-starts can cause problems if you don't plan for it.

  Two or more launch devices should be used.  If you are using a both
winches and high-starts, your team will be entered in the winch
category.

  Make sure that you have at least two gliders ready to launch at any
given time.  A bad launch can cause real problems if you don't have
another glider ready to go.

  Take turns logging the launches and flight times.  Make sure
everyone is familiar with the log and procedures for logging the
launches and times.  Losing track of your launches and times will
make it very difficult to figure your final standing.

  Bring a lunch!  Once the contest begins it is very difficult,
unless you have a large team, to leave for lunch.

FORMS:  Please fill out these forms and return them to me either
electronically (E-Mail) or regular mail.  The entry form should be
returned to me as soon as you decide to participate in the contest.

The other forms should be returned after the contest.  I have kept
the forms short in order to be able to send the via E-Mail using the
smallest amount of memory I can.  Please expand the pages as
necessary to make room for all pertinent data.

  I would also like to receive pictures of the teams, gliders, flying
fields, contest in action, etc.... A short description of the event
and a critique of the contest would also be appreciated.  I hope to
write an article for publication in the R/C magazines that gives the
results and shows the winners.  This could be a good opportunity for
any aspiring writers out there to get something published!

This looks like an excellent chance for everyone to work
on LSF goals.  In addition to logging flight times
we could have a measured tape for LSF landings and a local
mini-contest as well.

I favor using hi-starts only.  If we string out 3 and
try not to use backups and tangle lines we should be OK.
As far as teams - can we all be on the same team?  DECRCM!

Yeah, that sounds fine as long as we have some people there for chute shagging
so we can stay flying.
