783.0. "Little arrow on the piston" by TARKIN::HARTWELL (Dave Hartwell) Wed Nov 30 1988 12:13

I pulled apart my engine to clean it and attempt to repair the
crack in the case..... I also failed to determine which way the
arrow was pointing that resides on the top of the piston. I
assume that the arrow should point to the exhaust port but I've
been wrong before..... It's an OS .40 SF

        Dave,

Have you checked how much a new case will cost. My
experience is that engine parts are usually extremely reasonably
        priced.

If you need it, I'll pull the head on my .40 and see
        where the arrow points.

Dave,

Don't worry about the arrow, you have many ways to see which way the piston
fits.

	1. It the rod has not been removed from the piston the bezel on one
side of the big end goes towards the crank.

Back Plate | / <--- bezel
 this side |---|
	       |---|
	       | \
	       -----

	2. The side of the exhaust port is always the hottest and the piston is
blackened or stained more than the Transfer port side.

	3. There is a cutout in the piston for the transfer port. Often if the
piston is the wrong way the exhaust port exposes the bottom of the
	   cutout. This will cause

One of the above should put you on the right track.

In my .40 FSRs, the arrow does point to the exhaust ports.
