774.0. "Flying Sites" by LEDS::COHEN () Tue Nov 22 1988 14:00

    Hey !

How about a note about flying sites. List where they are, how to
get to them, the club that runs them (if any), and restrictions on
types of power systems allowed (if any).

(this is prompted by Dan Snow's comment in a recent note about a
nearby field that only allows Electrics, Gliders, and Four
Strokes, how about it Dan, where is it ?)

774.18CMRCM field: detailed directionsLEDS::LEWISWed Aug 19 1987 04:5316

Good idea - I've typed these directions out so many times it would
be nice to have them in one place!

Take Rt 135 south from the center of Northborough or north from
Rt 9. From 135 take the entrance to M2C (Mass Microeletronics
Center), marked by a sign. Go up hill and take first left. Now
take first left again. You will pass a parking area and come to
a sharp right turn. You will see a gate just around this corner,
and this is the gate you must go through. It's locked so you either
have to walk the rest of the way or wait for a member to let you in
and out. Go through the gate, to the bottom of the hill,
take a right onto a dirt road and you can't miss the flying field
(a hundred yards or so from there).

Directions to Charles River Radio Controllers' field in Sudbury:

From 495: Take the rt 62 east (I think it's exit 26), go
straight through Hudson. Continue straight where rt. 62 goes
left. This is Sudbury Road. Continue for a couple of miles past
a reservoir on the right and a construction site on the left.
Next you will see a gate on your left with a large white sign "Ft
Devens, Sudbury extension". Drive up to the gate and stop for
the guard. If there isn't one in the shack frive through the
gate (after stopping) and take an immediate left. Go about 1/2
mile and take a sharp right (this is actually the first real road
going right, there is also a small white sign with "flying
field". Go about 1/3 mile (watch the potholes) and you will see
the flying field on your right. There's a windsock and the field
        is several hundred feet square.

From 27: Tke 27 through Sudbury Center. Continue straight where
27 branches off on the right to Maynard. You are now on Hudson
road, which becomes Sudbury road on the Sudbury/Hudson town line.
Go several (3?) miles until you see the gate on your right and
then follow the directions given above.

It's best if you have made an appointment with a member
to escort you through the gate. If you haven't there is a small
chance that the guard may not let you through.

Bill Clark and I are members and typically go out there
whenever the weather is decent on the weekends.

774.29directions to the PVRCC fieldSPKALI::THOMASTue Apr 26 1988 16:4636
It looks like there will be ten or twelve individuals coming to
the second DEC RC Fly In. I'd hoped for more. Ho well.......

Directions. I'll give them for those coming down the Mass Pike RT90.

Take the RT291 exit off of RT90. Turn left after the RT90 exit onto
RT 291 and proceed to Springfield. At the junction of RT91 take
RT91 south. Take exit 48 off of RT91. You will be in Conn. Turn
left at the end of the exit ramp. This is RT220. There isn't any
sign to indicate that it is RT220 but it is. You will be traveling
eastward. At the sixth traffic light RT220 veers off to the left.
Stay on RT 220 until you see "OLDE FOX" on your left. Right after
OLDE FOX you will cross a set of railroad tracks. The entrance to
the field is right after these tracks on the right. If the road
is not pasable then a baracade will be in place. There is sufficient
parking of of the road. If necessary I will shuttle equipment the
500 yards to the flying field using my pickup. I'll be at the field
by 8:00 so you can plan on getting there any time from 8:00 on.
There is a new impound stand and frequency board. You will need
pins 1"x5" in size with a cloths pin attached to the back of the
pin. The pins can be white or multicolored. The frequency number
must be on the pin. I should have a dining fly up by the time
people start getting there. Often times the prison guards will stop
and check out cars, so I suggest that all keep their vehicles
"clean". There are two runways at this field. Depending on wind
direction I will declare one runway in use. The other will not be
used. We allow up to four flyers in the air at any one time.
You will find skids set up in the pit area. I suggest that you
put anything that you want to keep dry on these skids. When we
establish a "Flight Line" no flying will be permitted behind this
line. The flight line will be parallel to the pit area. One other
suggestion is that when everyone is there we will have a pilots
meeting. At that time it would be good to team up with someone to
    be your helper.

An other place to consider is the Quaker RC Flyers club in Whitinsville
(midway between Worcester & Woonsocket) of rte 122. The flying site
is a now out of business landfill (aka garbage dump) set on the
side of hill near the top. Good for gliders when wing pick up. See

I found out from the new Rider Hobby Shop on Carpenter in Ann Arbor
about a fixed wing field in Milan, about 14 miles south of Ann Arbor,
and a Helicopter field in Ann Arbor where they fly on Sundays only.
I did go to both, and at the helicopter field, I was supprised at
the activity. There is a helicopter club that is about 1 year old,
and the skill level on several of the new pilots made me envious.

At the fixed wing field in Milan, I was treated as if I were royalty.
One gentleman by the name of Jim Larson even brought his Sig Seniorita
to the field on Sunday afternoon so that I could have something
to fly. I did make one flight on it (after he took off so I could
get a feel after 3 years) and even made a landing. It did flip
over but it was very light and the pilot walked away. The hospitality
shown to me was fantastic and if anyone gets to the Ann Arbor area,
I would recommend going to Riders for directions and make sure to
get to the Milan field to meet a real great group of people.

So Eric - is your field in the United States?
If so what state :-)

Orange Mass. (USA)
Orange Air Park (Mohawk Valley Modelers club field)

Go west on Route 2 to the Airport/Route 202 South exit.
Go North about 100 yards and turn left into the Air Park.
Follow the road to the end (about 100 yards) and turn right.
Take the next left (if you don't you will hit a dead end).
Use your key to go thru the gate.
Turn left and follow road around all he runways til you come
	to the club shack.
Park there and fly on the unused runway next to it.
It is about 1500 feet long, paved and has some bad
cracks on the end nearest to the active runways.
There are flight stations marked on the runway and a frequency
	poll in the shack.

Closed during winter months (snow prevents access).
Open to AMA members who are guests of members.

Membership limited to residents of Athol and Orange
with one exceptions granted to notable Ducted Fan and
Scale modelers. See President Randy King (he is in the
	Athol phone book) for details.

Gardner Mass. (USA)
Central Mass Correctional Institute (Wachusettes Barn Stormers club field)

Go west on Route 2 to the 140 North exit (just east of Gardner).
Look for the Correctional Institute sign (about 1/2 mile north on 140
and take a right. Follow the signs into the Correctional Institute
and drive past thru and past everything towards a wild life sanctuary.
Keep going till your convinced you have went too far then go a little
further (about 1/2 mile) and you will see a building with some cars
and planes flying on the left up a little hill.

You can show up and fly 2 or 3 times without joining as long as
you are an AMA member and you have a club member present. They
have an impound area and a box of club supplied frequency pins.

The advantage of this club it they fly all winter long religously.
The field is only open Sundays during hunting season.
If you want to join the club there may be a waiting list (there was
last year). There a nice bunch of guys but there not going to
leap out of their cars and welcome you with open arms. You have
to seek them out and introduce yourself. Runway is well maintained
and about 200-300 feet long. Tree line and old building make it
a little tight for flying. This last year they have had lot's of
	frequency problems.

X MARKS THE FIELD

The easiest way to get there is route 9 west.
After going through West Brookfield center,
another 3-5 miles west you snake down a hill into a valley.
Just before the valley floor you reach the Ware town line.
500 FT. past the town line take a sharp right. Follow this road
for 1.5 miles. You will see the woods on the left give way to a field.
Thats the field. Take the next left and another left just before the
bridge. Follow the dirt road to the parking lot under the trees.
See you there.

        Kay,

Its in Callahan State Park in Framingham. I don't
remember the directions offhand, but its quite close to Pnobscot.
If you find the park and put your car in the parking lot you take
the path across the field and through a row of bushes. On the
other side you will see a large field through a gap in the bushes
on your left. Thats it. Only for CRRC members and their guests,
and AMA insurance required, of course.

This weekend both Saturday and Sunday is the District I fun fly in Westover MA.

I'm not reading this from the AMA magazine so I can't be sure of details.
Could someone please confirm this and give directions to Westover.

Anyway I plan to be there Saturday.

==================================================================================
Sunday in Hadley Mass there is a Scale Fly In. Kevin and I checked out
the field a couple of weeks ago and it looks very nice. It is grass but
is long enough and smooth enough that they fly jets off it. I'm hoping that
I can get a test flight on a Berliner-Joyce before Sunday and if the Fun
Fly in Westover isn't too much fun then I will be at this Scale Fly In.

Directions are as follows:

I91 to route 9 East.
Just after you cross over the bridge over the Connecticut River
look for a left hand turn (North) between a fruit stand and the
Polish American Club. You are now within 1 mile or so of the field
and it is next to the Connecticut River so if you get lost just remember
that if you can follow the river north you will be going past the field.

You're in the middle of farm fields now...

Go down the gravel road and when you come to a T take a left.
Take your next right.
Take your next left.
Take your next right.
You're there.

774.35relationship between the state and an R/C clubLEDS::LEWISFri Aug 04 1989 20:2345
I couldn't find a better place for this so I stuck it here. Let's
make this topic the CMRCM information topic.
    ==================================================================

I have some information that should make CMRCM members (and our entire
RC community) feel pretty good.

I spoke with Chris Thurlow, the District Manager of the department of
fisheries and wildlife this afternoon, to ask for permission to land
the recon chopper at CMRCM tomorrow. He said no problem (suggested I
let the Westboro police dispatcher know about it in case there are any
calls) and added some interesting tidbits to the conversation.

He said that they are trying to formalize the relationship between
CMRCM and the department - not change anything particularly, but just
formalize things a little now that they have complete control over the
area. I guess until recently there was some question about what state
department actually controlled the land. I gave him our president's
name and number.

Here's good part #1. Chris stated that there is no plan to change our
club's relationship and use of the land. He also stated that they are
trying to eliminate the dog trials from that field! Wouldn't that be
great if we didn't have to be grounded by dog days any more?!

Here's good part #2. Chris stated that of all the clubs they have dealt
with over the years, the RC clubs have been the most courteous, easy
to deal with, clean up after themselves, etc etc. He had nothing
but praise for us. He commented on the problems of 15 years ago when
CMRCM and the dog groups and hunters didn't get along very well. There
were apparently arguments, fistfights, and even airplanes being shot
down (literally) back then. He gave the impression that the reason things
have gone so smoothly since then is because of the quality of our club
membership, which may be part of the reason they want to move the dog
people out and keep us there. By the way, his comments about RC clubs
was not only directed toward CMRCM, as he mentioned there are one or
two other RC clubs in the area on state-owned land that have also been
very easy to deal with. Unfortunately I don't remember their names and
locations.

Not often that we hear these good comments from the "outside". Thought
I would pass the word around.

From Maynard Center, take Main Street/Rt 62 west towards Stow. You will
merge with Rt. 117 approximately 1.5 miles from the center. Follow 62/117
west for approximately 1.5 miles from the lights where 62 and 117 join. On
the LEFT you will see White Pond Rd., and a sign for the Stow-Away Golf
course. Turn Left there. If you pass Erkkinen Buick you missed it. Follow
White Pond Rd to the end, about 1 mile. You will cross a small concrete
bridge, and about 50-75' after the bridge is a dirt rd to the RIGHT. Take
that dirt road for 1.1 miles, and you are at Crow Island.

Directions to the Ware MA club field. Please note that this location is
currently for sale and the site could be lost in the future. At present the
field may still be used.

The Divot Diggers field is available for use by members and their guests.
Prospective members may fly once if sponsored by a current club member. All
fliers must have current AMA membership.

The flying field is off Rt. 32 in Ware.

From the East:
Take route 9 west from Worcester to the junction with route 32...
		(continued below)
From the West:
Take route 9 east through Ware to route 32...
		(continued below)

From the South-East:
Take route 20 west from Route 84/Mass Pike and take route 148 north
(towards Brookfield) to route 9. Head west on route 9 to route 32...

From the junction of Route 9 and route 32:
...head towards Gilbertville on route 32 and about a mile down the
road on the left there is a road with a small median. Turn left there
and as you come over the bridge you'll see a dirt road on the left.
Take that road in past the now closed airfield and soon you'll see the
small asphalt strip (100'x20') and the mown area surrounding it.

Recommended flying patterns are over the old airfield and away from Route 32
(there is someone across the road that complains and we don't want to lose the
use of the field). The club tries to hold a fun fly each year and several
members are into 1/4 scale. The field is open year round but the access road
isn't plowed so that can be a limiting factor. Flying is requested to be after
9am (can you really get out of the house before then ;^)

My club has been a club without a field for one year. But that's
about to change in a big way. Presently we have two irons in the
fire and one cooling. That is to say...

At present we are negociating with a turf farmer in suffield ct.
Actually this area is a close as suffield comes to being Southwick Ma.
THis area would be designated as the "Official Club Sailplane Site".
Another turf farm is also being negociated with in the enfield ct. area
for the purposes of establishing a "southern" engine powered site.
This should take us a few months to nail down so I wouldn't expect any
    action until next spring.
The last site and the one I mentioned was "cooling" is the use of
the Palmer Ma. Airport for a power site. THis is 18 miles NE of
Springfield and is a non controller private airport. Similar in
function to the location that the "Divot Diggers of Jim Reith fame
are flying from. Actually one of the gentleman who recently bought
the site that the Divot Diggers are on actually used to tie down his
plane at Palmer. OK, We'll be flying off of a paved taxi strip and
an adjacent grass strip they have for full sized aircraft. The
airport manager is being more than cooperative with our efforts. When
I spoke with him to set the deal up it really wasn't a question of "IF"
we should be allowed to use the area. More a question of what did we
need and what did he have to do to get us in. Quite a refreshing
discussion after one year of searching, talking to people and etc.

So, we as a club should be showing a presence there over the next few
weeks getting the area squared away to effectively become a Miniature
Aircraft field and are hoping to make the next club meeting Aug.
21st the kick off day/evening for our flying activities.

    Great news Tom!

O'Reilly has been very cooperative with us in our use of the field. We
have several Palmer/Monson area fliers in our club that would be
interested in information about your club. It might also be good for
you to have a couple of hometown guys to keep an eye on things and an
ear to the ground on town issues. I know it works out well for us to
have someone 5 minutes from the field and friendly with the town cops.
774.40Wave goodbye to WaylandHPSPWR::WALTERSat Jul 27 1991 13:4541
Well, folks, we have lost yet another flying field, this time a
glider site. John Nilsson, the president of the Charles River
club, called me last night to inform me that even gliders have
been banned from the Wayland conservation land site on Rt. 27 in
	Wayland.

I realize very few people who read this conference used that
field, but it was a primo area for gliders. Unfortunately, the
easy access to it meant lots of people knew about the flying
going on there, and some renegades occasionally showed up with
power planes (which were always banned). This upset the
neighbors. I think the last straw was the guy learning to fly his
powered trainer who brought a lawnmower with him and actually cut
a runway in the middle of the field! You can't DO that, it's
	state land.

John was invited to a meeting of the commission that governs that
land a couple nights ago, to present his side of the issue. When
he got there, he found a vote had already been taken and the
gliders banned! But he was allowed to speak anyway (how
democratic of them...). Also in attendance was a gentleman that
represented those with the opposite view, and he had a little
notebook with a list of violations and when they took place.

John argued that he doesn't condone power flying there, and that
none of the CRRC club fly power at that site. His argument that
gliders are environmentally innocous was countered by a women who
claimed that she saw hawks attack the gliders, which meant that
they were agitated and harassed! (This from a woman who tends a
vegetable garden on that land... she doesn't seem too concerned
about the squirrels and hedgehogs she displaces. I wonder if she
	uses insecticides?)

I think they just find it much easier to ban all flying rather
than trying to distinguish a glider from a powered plane. I
wasn't at the meeting, so this isn't an entirely objective
account, but it sure seems like we were shot down by a group of
people who just can't stand to see others enjoying themselves. It
just sticks in their craw, somehow.

I reported awhile back that my club had recieved permission to fly
at the Palmer Airport. Over the last week we've been doing a little
work to deveolp the site. To date we've install two picnic tables in
ourpit area and painted some reference marks to designate the
pits/parking area. Also we've painted four circles to designate the
pilots flight stations. The field is organized to allow us access to
the taxi-way in order to get to the parking/pits area. We park off of
one of the taxi-ways so that we can pit directly behind our cars and
still allow for a buffer area for any aircraft that wishes to use the
taxi-way. The flight stations are on an old turn around adjacent to the
active runway. Flying with a spotter is manditory. WE also have
initiated a rule that requires all RC traffic to land when a any full
sized traffic is in the area either taxiing or within the traffic
    pattern getting ready to land.

774.42SA1794::TENEROWICZTThu Oct 24 1991 13:0831

My club the PVRCC has had a rough year. Last year in August we lost
the field we'd had for about five years. That was rough. Rougher still
was trying to find a new field. We've looked at a minimum of 100
potential sites and late this past august we came to an agreement
to utilize Palmer Municipal airport. Unfortunately that area
hasn't worked out as I'd hoped. This is by no fault the failure of
the airport but rather the apprehension of the RC flyers to mix
with full sized aircraft. Hence we've decided to stop flying there.

It's funny how you can go along and then all of a sudden a dam seems
to burst... we had been evicted from our field in CT because the
landowner (LEGO) wished to build on the property. Then when they
went for the zoning changes because 50% of the land is on "Wetlands"
they couldn't get the changes. They since have negociated with the
state of CT and the prison (which abutts their property) to swap the
land the intended to build on for another section that is note zoned
wetlands. So interesting is the fact that we've been in contact with
the lawyer for the state who negociated the land swap deal and the
state is looking to use the land for some recreational purpose.
WE MAY END UP GETTING THIS PROPERTY BACK TO USE AS AN RC FIELD!!!

That we will know in a few weeks. Along with this we've been
negociating with a Turf farmer south of Agawam Ma. to use his
250 acre farm as a site. This we have come to terms with and
will be voting on at our next meeting. If everything turns out
right we may have two field to reduce the pressure. Funny,
go from no field to two fields in one month.

To update everyone on the ongoing saga of finding a field...

We are still awaiting the final word from the prison warden if we can
use the (our old) Lego field. It's been approved by everyone including
the warden but he wanted to pass the idea onto his boss. This delay
coupled with the recent prison difficulties they've been having has
slowed this train down to a crawl. We're hesitating pushing the idea
seeing as the warden has better things on his mind. But there is very
    optimistic hope.

To add to this we come across another turf farm 4 miles west of the
present farm we're renting in Suffield Ct. This new farm is in West
Suffield and we have permission to fly there during the winter on a
trial basis. Then in the spring we can sit down and negociate a
    contract if the membership want.

Add to this, I have a meeting with the VP Director of a local
Exposition Fair grounds not 2 miles west of Springfield. The have
a complex that sits on about 300 acres with a 100 acre parking lot.
Businesses abutt the area on two sides with the river and the
fair complex abutting the remaining two sides. A ramdon group of guys
ocasionally use this parking lot to fly. The VP is looking for us to
come in and formalize the use. The club would have jurisdiction.

Well, I guess this could go here:

It seems from my club meeting last night that we've lost
yet another flying site in Yorkshire.

The local council will shortly be introducing a bye-law
forbidding the use of aircraft powered by IC engines on Baildon
    Moor.

One of our club members remembers flying taking place on
Baildon Moor since 1935. Now, thanks to the usual minority of
idiots we all lose it 8^(. It seems that at least one guy has
been flying a noisy plane at 8:30 am!

The club members will be flooding the council with protests,
but they've pretty much made their minds up. The *really* worrying
thing is that they used wording from the BMFA handbook to justify
stopping flying, since the moor is classified as a "country
    park". So is our field.........

We're not a BMFA affiliated club (we are SMAE affiliated).
Unfortunately the Council has been in discussion with the BMFA, and
has used their handbook as the basis for the ban. We are contacting
the BMFA, the council, the Sports Council, God, Esther Rantzen,
etc etc etc, but I feel we may simply be too late.

I know the BMFA does a good job and all that, but in this case they
seem to have negotiated everybody's rights away, without referring the
    council to ANY other organisations.

    Nigel,
There does seem to be that view regarding BMFA. In their latest
BMFA News (September 93) they even discuss that very point (page 10)
...Within the Handbook they use the "DOE Code of Practice for the
Minimisation of Noise" as guide lines (BMFA Members Handbook starting
page 23)... BMFA will help, hopfully, to assist proving you fall within
the Guideline, which is the very part Councils use against model clubs
when they want to get rid of them.

If you would find any comfort in a copy I'll fax the various pages.

DIRECTIONS TO NEW BOSTON, NH FIELD (FLYING EAGLES)

The New Boston Field is located on Rt 13 about mid-way between Mont
Vernon and New Boston, New Hampshire. Rt 13 is accessible via
Rt 101 in Milford, but use any other method you like.

Once on Rt 13 going north, you are looking for the General Store on the
left in the center of Mont Vernon.
Go 4.8 miles beyond this point, and you will
see South Hill Road on your left. Turn in here, and go about 1/4 mile.
On your left will be what looks like a driveway to the side of a mobile
home. There is a small Flying Eagles sign on the big tree just to the
right side of this driveway, but its almost impossible to see unless
you know its there. Turn in there, and the field is about 200 feet back.

Flying is open to club members only and their invited guests from 10 AM
    to dusk.
