327.21SUBSCRIPTION ADDRESS FOR SCALE R/C MODELER MAG.16400::CASEYATHE DESERT RAT RC-AV8RThu Aug 27 1987 20:5124
To all serious or potential scale flyers,

Here is the address for subscribing to Scale R/C Modeler (SR/CM)
    magazine:

    			SCALE R/C MODELER MAGAZINE
    			CHALLENGE PUBLICATIONS
    		  ATTN: SUBSCRIPTION DEPT.
    			7950 DEERING AVE.
    			CANOGA PARK,
    			CA	91304

Subscription rates are $18.95/year or $29.95/2-yr.'s.

If yer' even casually considering getting into scale, I highly recom-
mend you subscribe to this publication. I, frankly, don't feel
it's as good a magazine as it once was (due to turnover in editors)
but it's still the best (only) scale mag going! It's full of pic's
and articles on what's going on in scale and who's doing it. Despite
the occasional silly remarks made by the editor, there's still a
lot of valuable info in this magazine and you should be reading
    it.

I usually read everything cover to cover, including the ads.

I read Model Builder and Model Aviation, every month, cover to
cover, except the control line racing material, but I do read the
scale control line column in MA. I ocassionally read RCM and
Flying Models, and very infrequently MAN (I feel they sold out
badly several years ago, though they occasionally suprise me,
such as the Small Steps column). I consider Scale RCM unfit for
human consumption at any point past the cover (speaking of
covers, you can tell where the photographer was looking when he
did Miss August!).

Just a few mild-mannered opinions, though you didn't ask.
327.5GIMME' MODELING ORIENTED COVERS!!!!GHANI::CASEYATHE DESERT RAT RC-AV8RThu Oct 08 1987 14:5125
That's a big "Roger," Chris; Model Aviation = AMA mag. I subscribe
to Model Aviation (though I doubt I would if it didn't come with
AMA membership), Model Airplane News (which I intend to drop when
the current subscription expires), Scale R/C Modeler (I agree with
you, John, but it's the ONLY all scale mag around), and infequently
pick up a copy of Model Builder from the hobby shop. I intensely
resent RCM's passing off a mail order house catalog as a model
    magazine.

I read EVERYTHING relating to scale, including U-Control and free-
flight/rubber powered/peanut scale, and anything else that catches
my eye. I won't read anything pertaining to cars, boats or electrics
as I have zero-interest in these activities...everything else, in-
    cluding old-timers, is fair game.

Incidentally, John, I disagree with you regarding the SR/CM covers
being great. Don't misunderstand, I'm the farthest thing you'll
meet from a prude and appreciate the fine form of the female bod
as much as anyone (or more), but the "OBVIOUS" ploy of trying to
sell me a magazine (perhaps a bad one at that) based on the cheese-
cake covers (that rightly belong on the Playboy/Penthouse genre)
insults my intelligence and offends the H*ll outa' me!!! Who said
    I wasn't opinionated?

You lot are spoilt for choice.... I read RCM&E
and Radio Control model World every month. I usually
end up reading it all by the time the next issue comes
out, but electric flight, slope soaring etc comes last.

That's about it over here. Well there is one
called Radio Modeller, which I didn't like particularly,
and a quartely Scale Model something or other, which
comes out at #3 ($5) a go, but is about as thick as an
	RDC engineer's wallet ( ie thin ).....

There are a couple of spuriously available Heli
magazines as well.. I get these when I see them......

Yeah, actually, Al, I think those covers are a bit much, with the
one I mentioned (if I've got the wrong month, it's obvious which
one I'm talking about...) being over the borderline between taste
and porn. I was mentioning this very thing to my local hobby
shop propreitor, Phlyin Phil, and he said that its no
coincidence, since the company that publishes Scale RCM also
publishes girlie mags.

You're right, its the only game in town. I especially resent
their publishing of "construction" articles with incomplete,
useless, or worse yet, completely missing plans. I know that the
current thing is kits, and that the publishing of plans is really
a hang-on from the old days when most scratch built, and that if
a person really scratch builds, the odds are he will send off for
plans rather than draw them...but there are a few of us
screwballs out there who do like to do a little lofting now and
again.

That same beef with plans is what bothers me about MAN; their
plans are so small, or are broken up, as to be *nearly*
unusuable. Funny, I complain about MAN, and say that I seldom
read it, but when I count up the projects I've done, better than
half of them come from MAN. I gotta say this, they do publish
some interesting models.

I am also one of the RCM / Model Aviation readers. I read Scale
RCM once - never again. They have a lot of B***S charging what
they do for it. I kind of enjoy the catalog nature of RCM. I
read most of the ADs although they do not change very often. If
I learn of any other worth while Mags from this note, I'll give
    them a try.

Since I have recently returned to modeling I read AMA mag and

Well worth the cover price for such a comprehensive compilation
of Mail Order. Buy one issue and update once a year, you're set
    for life.

I must say, nobody makes a bad product according to RCM, seems like
everything they evaluate has zero or very minor negative points.
NO WAY that it could be because they don't want to lose advertisers.

So far the only advertisers I have dealt with are, TOWER, HOBBY
SHACK (both have ticked me off), DAN PARSON'S and MUTCHLERS (both
of whom gave me excellent service (fast too!)). I'll guarantee
repeat business with D.P. and MUTCHLERS.

OK, I'm off my soap box now. The 2 hour drive to work this morning
due to snow has put me on edge, sorry.

327.16Whatever became of RC Sportsman?TEKTRM::REITHJim Reith DTN 235-8459 HANNAH::REITHWed Aug 23 1989 13:2915
R/C Sportsman?

While getting back to building I found a little 2ch .049 bipe I was building
and started hunting for the plans/construction article. Found both and off we
go but it surprised my wife that I would actually dig through my collection of
10+ year old magazines. Anyway, I was wondering what ever happened to R/C
Sportsman. It was a newspaper mag which included a full size set of planes in
each issue along with a construction article. I have 2 years of issues from
late 76 to 78 and really enjoyed going back through them this past weekend.

I'm sure they're gone but what happened, when and are there any others out there
with this type of format? (no glitz, less polished articles by modelers, not
writers with good tips, not grammar ;^) I'm tired of paying for catalogs with
a couple of articles and the last RC Modeler I bought had a "Fully dressed"
girl on the cover ;^) What are these mags coming to?
327.17RC Sportsman --- gone foreverCTD024::TAVARESJohn -- Stay low, keep movingWed Aug 23 1989 14:4721
Funny you should mention RC Sportsman. I was in Reno (it was
published there) last week and did my usual hobby shop exploraton
routine.

In one shop I found several issues in a box labelled "FREE". I
grabbed one with Phil Kraft's somethingfly and another with a
little plane by Jack Headly. Anyway, as I looked the mag over, I
was impressed by its quality; they had some first rate names and
articles in there.

As far as its demise, I've seen references to it in other mags
over the last few years, and usually the remark is in context
with magazines "telling it like it is" in the area of product
reviews. RC Sportsman is mentioned as a case of one mag that did
and ain't telling no more.

I intend to pursue this one further out of curiousity(sp). I went
out to the Reno RC club field, but there was nobody there -- and
my stay in the Greatest City In The World was short this time.
I'll enter a note here if I find out more, but it'll be a long
time coming.
327.18mixing the V at the stickTEKTRM::REITHJim Reith DTN 235-8459 HANNAH::REITHWed Aug 23 1989 15:1312
BTW: what were the dates on the FREE issues you picked up (as I mentioned my
subscription ran out in 78 and I lost "funding" - read got married before
renewal time ;^) How much longer did they last?

I've started/built several of their plans and found them high caliber. I'm in
process with a flying V tail glider with mechanical mixing that was a
construction article along with the .049 bipe. The v tail article discusses
using two servos, one for each side and holding the Tx 45 degrees off or
modifying an old Tx to mount the stick rotated 45 degrees as alternatives to
building the on board mixer... and now with mixing built into many Txs it seems
like a long time ago. Like I said, I had a great time reading the 10+ year old
issues (including the Nats coverage ones)

I just got an ad to subscribe to the Smithsonian Air & Space magazine.
It's 6 issues for $18, and you also get a membership to the museum (but
they don't tell you what that means).

Anybody get this mag? Is it worth paying for? I recently heard that
they haven't updated the exhibits in 14 years, so I wonder if it's
worth it.

    Al,

Beware the Ides of March! I got back from a trip (more on that later)
and found the news when I logged in. Tell me it ain't so. I told my
wife and she's devistated because she knows how much i get out of your
advice to all the noters. There's got to be a way to keep you around
as a "consultant" so you can at least have a terminal and an account to
    keep in touch.

Now about my trip, All you'll find this interesting. I went to
Huntsville, Alabama, because DEC might team with Grumman Data Systems
on a large NASA marshall Spaceflight Center procurement. Well I don't
know about you but after all day meetings the LAST thing I want to do
is go to dinner with these very same people and talk shop, i.e.
Digital. My mind got to workin' trying to find remember if there was
anyone in Huntsville I wanted to visit and lo and behold i realized I
had a copy of RC Report with me. It was worth a try so I called Gordon
Banks and invited him and his wife Mina to dinner - they accepted!

I gotta' tell you spending the evening with Gordon and Mina drinking
wine and talking about RC was great! I got to see the home office of
RC Report and Gordon's shop. This guy has the world's largest
collection of propellers, boxes and boxes sent by manufacturers.
Gordon tells me that he'd like to have you as a contributor to his rag,
he wants to put more scale info into it.

I told Gordon about how the notesfile works and that all of us are
personal friends of the Rat. He was impressed and gave me a box of
about 100 copies of this month's RC Report. If anyone wants a copy,
send me mail at PEE47::COX. Meeting Mina and Gordon Banks was great,
no I know two famous people, if i count Al too! Gotta go!

I just received my free copy of R/C report as per Scott Cox' offer
    in .1932.
I'm impressed! First time I've looked inside an issue. For $10
a year you can't go wrong. Most of the planes/kits reviewed are
outside my main interests, but they have some good general building
techniques, and even an electric column. Pageing through it, in
less than 2 minutes, I was able to discover what size prop should
be used on an Aerofly, 7X6, which I had been considering building.
So thanks a lot Scott, and it looks like I'll be ordering yet another
    periodical.

Add my unsolicited favorable comment to the last three about
"R/C Report". True, it wouldn't be everybody's bag, as the
less-than-glitzy format might not always grab your attention-
but the 'Readin' is good, and the editing staff seems to be
quite human. I never write letters-to-the-editor, but I did
once - a few months ago, and you know...they printed it !
I guess you know - I became "Hooked".

mutterin' to myself on that one. I came awful close the time
they had your Mig as the "Guessee", but lost out on a short draw.

327.28R/C ReportPNO::CASEYATHE DESERT RAT (I-RC-AV8)Wed Mar 28 1990 21:2544
For those who are not aware of just what R/C Report is, here's a little
    description fer' ya's.

The publication is edited/published by Gordon Banks out of Huntsville,
Alabama. It is in "tabloid form," that is it's printed on newsprint
about half the size of the average newspaper. The main claim to fame
is the "Tell-it-like-it-is!" style product reports, kit reviews, etc.
These characteristics have prompted our friend, Norm Goyer, of Scale
R/C Modeler, to refer to R/C Report as the "National Enquirer" of
modeling (which should recommend the publication to many of us almost
    instantly).

Gordon Banks has a terrific sense of humor and includes liberal doses
of same throughout the paper. The letters to the editor page seldom
fails to evoke several guffaws and a running gun battle (of wits)
between readers and Gordon is the mainstay of this section.

There are monthly columns on scale, giant scale, beginners' stuff,
scratchbuilding, hints 'n tips, etc. but the bulk of the paper is taken
up with product reviews/tests/reports et al. Here, the reviewer is
free to say whatever he feels about the subject under review, good or
bad, and the impression is that your getting pure, undiluted
information, not stuff that's been watered down to avoid offending an
    advertiser.

During recent correspondence with Gordon (re. the Name the Plane
contest I won), he asked me to write some stuff for publication and I
responded that I'd be glad to if he'd suggest some possible topics but
felt that Jeff Troy was ultimately qualified to write the scale column
and didn't know what I could add to that. If any of you'ns have any
suggestions for a topic, maybe I can gin something up for submission
    and possible publication....

....Which reminds me, it's about that time of month that the next (May)
issue of RCM should begin to appear so, if anyone spots my [Phantom]
article on the '89 Scale Masters Champs, please lemme' know so's I kin'
run out and grab up a copy. (I do hope they print it _before_ the '90
    Masters.) :B^)

honest I've seen in any for-profit magazine. The advertiser list is
different; the issue in front of me has no adds by Tower, Airtronics,
JR, Hobbico, OS, Great Planes, etc. There are adds by ACE, Sheldon's,

40, ACE R/C Micropro 8000, Air Flair Schtick, Balsa USA Phaeton 90,
Telemaster 70 electric, two battery cyclers, two book reviews, and two
miscellaneous things. There are articles on: improving the Durabat,
eliminating the spinner gap, bracing a tail, and getting improved
electric power performance from batteries; I would characterize these
as two full articles, one (the spinner thing) major how-to, and a minor
how-to (the bracing). The articles vary in substance month to month
and are usually a bit stronger than this particular month's. Much of
the material is in the columns.

Bottom line for me: I subscribe to something like eight magazines
(MAN, MB, MA, RCM, FM, RCR, SRC, and RCSD); if I had to cut back, I'd
be sure to retain RCR as the best return/money.

RCM has an 800 number, but it doesn't seem to be well known --- I don't
think they want it to be heavily used. The staffing is light.

I just called this number and ordered three sets of plans on my VISA.
I also ordered a book and could have entered a subscription. A lot
easier and faster than writing a letter.

    	Hi y'all from the UK

I would like to read a few examples of the RC magazines available
in the USA. Is RCM still the best? What other ones do you
    	read?

I'm considering a subscription to RCM, does anyone know if
    	its available in the UK?

    	cheers Brian.

PRESS RELEASE OF SCALE & SLOPE MAGAZINE

Dear R/C Soaring Enthusiast,

We want to announce the introduction of a new R/C soaring
special interest publication beginning in July of this year. The
publication will debut as a magazine entitled SCALE & SLOPE (SS).
As you may have already guessed, it is a spin-off of the North
American Scale Soaring Association and the enthusiasm created by
those involved in NASSA. As such, this information is
dedicated to R/C soaring enthusiasts, such as yourself, who have
a keen interest in scale and slope soaring. SS, therefore, is
planned as a premium quality, quarterly magazine dedicated to
both R/C scale soaring and slope soaring.

Publicists of this new venture are fashioning it for modelers
demanding more information and data in the burgeoning area of
scale and slope soaring the world over. Consequently, SS will
focus its attention on these specialized areas, however, it will
also feature FAI formats when it benefits the readership. And,
SCALE & SLOPE plans to gather reader material from a soaring
community that spans the globe. SS's project blueprints call for
feature articles covering a range of subjects such as a
craftsman's corner, modeler interviews (dedicated to a
distinguished modeler in the area of SS), product news, vintage
scale, modern scale, Power Slope Scale, model sources, SS & FAI
airfoils, slope racing, aerobatics, and scale 3-views.
Additionally, a photo pictorial and just plain general scale and
slope flying news will be included. Note too, SS will feature a
professional 8.5" x 11" format with a color cover.

In order to create a publication with as broad of informational
base as possible we welcome any and all contributions.

So, if you are an individual who likes scale soaring and/or
slope soaring you may be attracted to this new source of R/C
soaring news. The introductory price for this quarterly
publication is $19.95 a year. Payment may be made by check or
money order to: SCALE & SLOPE, P.O. Box 4267, W. Richland, WA
99352; e-mail wilbyers@AOL.COM.

Lastly, we think, SCALE & SLOPE is going to attract
contributors who will provide R/C soaring content such that it
will benefit you the reader and your hobby.

  Sincerely,

  Wil Byers/Gregory Vasgerdsian
