19.9How to sell an engine.HPSRAD::AJAITue Oct 24 1989 13:5644
I learnt one thing at the CRRC auction. How to sell engines (or,
    conversely, how not to).

Eric did a mah'velous job of packaging his Webra and OS 60 size
engines. He had them mounted on a wooden stand (separately), and also
supported the tail pipes. Props were mounted, so people could flip the
thing (very important, according to our marketing expert), bringing
tremendous psychological forces to bear on the unwary.

The efficacy of his technique was borne out, when brand new engines
that were in boxes did not sell for a rebate over the purchase price,
while Eric's engines were snapped up as "bargains". Ahhh! Percieved
    value can be sooo decieving.

Interestingly enough, Eric does his forefathers proud. The British were
expert traders, which set the pace for building the massive empire.
Here is how they went about it.

British Trader: Oh Mighty King, may we set up shop here?
Generous King : Sure, why not?

    Few days later...

Brit : I want to bring in 10,000 troops to protect my goods. Is that
           OK?
King : [Now wondering what's going on, but putting on his best manners].
Gee, if you really think so.

    Some more days later...

King : Say, Brit, think I could borrow your troops for a little shindig
           with my neighbour?
Brit : We could work something out, certainly! For half the land you
conquer, and the troops are yours.

... and so they kept playing this game [in different flavours] until
    they took the world over...

"Two" many history lessons. Gotta stop it...

19.16auctions are funROCK::KLADDMon Jan 29 1990 15:2915
    dan,

i'm planning to attend the 495th auction. as far as i know its the
first tuesday in feb. that would be feb 6. i'll have to double check
    to be sure.

i don't know chelmsford real well but know how to drive to the
church the 495 meetings are at. maybe i also know how to give
directions: take 495 north to route 4 exit, take right at end of ramp.
drive for half a mile or so and you'll come to a funny intersection/
triangle, take right and church is immediately on left. park wherever
you can. will have to look to see meeting starting time (i go about
    twice a year).

19.23Auction ResultsKAY::FISHERStop and smell the balsa.Mon Oct 15 1990 17:01245
Results from the Southern New Hampshire Flying Eagles Auction
  on Sunday 14-Oct-1990.

The good parts.
  Lots of fun and laughs.
Several real bargains in Planes, kits, engines, and radios.

The bad parts.
Hot and stuffy - I think maybe the reason I bid on a couple of items
was an unconscious desire to take it out to the car to cool off.

A few of us met at Jeff Friedrichs for breakfast before heading over. Jeff's
son Richard has this really neat stuffed Bi-Plane over his crib. Jeff's
wife Corinne(sp) fixed bacon and pancakes for us and put up with all our RC
talk. I was amazed at what she let's Jeff get away with - they have WWI
aviation art all over the place. I can see that it will be in my better
interest to have my wife spend more time with her.

Anyway thanks again Jeff and please tell your wife we appreciated the breakfast.

Now on the the details:

At first we thought we were going to be there all day as the auctioneer started
getting confused and forgetting the latest bid - etc. on the first couple of
items.

But soon he got into the swing of things and things moved along better.

This is the second time this club did a buy back scheme but the first time I
have been to an RC auction that was run this way. It had it's advantages.

There was no such thing as a min bid. If you didn't want to take less
than $100 for something you were selling your only alternative was to
bid it up yourself. If you won the bid you would have to pay the club
5 percent. This helped keep more items going to new owners. It is really
annoying how at some auctions they set min bids at say $100 but they start
the bidding at $20 and work their way up to $90 and then turn to the owner
and say - will you take $90 and they say no and take the item home.

I'm not sure what the right thing is to do here - for the buyers it would be
nice if the seller could not set a min and had to take the highest bid. That
is if you put something in the auction - you WILL sell it. On the other hand
I can see where you wouldn't want to sell a nice plane for $2.00.

One of the frustrations with this procedure was you frequently found yourself
bidding against the seller. Now even tho he may be thinking that he will
not take less than $200 for something - you can still find yourself at $71
$72 $73 $74 $75 bidding. This is because the owner may know that he will not
take less than $200 but since he has to pay 5% he also wants
to have the lowest bid on his buy back. This tended to slow things up.

Anyway - on the items and prices:
BB - means the owner bought it back

was compatible with the Futaba PCM or 1024 PCM

the AMA 1991 list. I didn't realize that they
had a 5 channel micro receiver (looked great for

re .23 - SNH Flying Eagles Auction...

'Twas not I that bought the bag of 15 2" wheels, but 'twas Al Ryder.
I have no clue what he is going to do with all of them...

Yes, that was my very ugly boat that I have been trying to sell for
some time... At least I finally got the value of the engine out of it.

The wind-socks are actually manufactured by one of the people in the
club. So selling 2 of them was really a promotional deal more than
    anything...

    -----

The buy-back option is our current solution to showing a lot of
merchandise that doesn't get sold and therefore doesn't make any
    money for the club.

I agree that it is frustrating to bid with the seller. If the seller
would just state his min bid, it would be easier...

I have been thinking about an alternative.. What would people think
about a system that allows the seller to choose up front regarding a
minimum bid, but is charged for the service. So, I have a plane that
I want to sell for at least $100. As I register, I pay $3.00 per item
with a minimum bid. If it doesn't make minimum, the club keeps the
$3.00. If it does get sold, then the club takes 10% *minus* $3, so the
seller still gets 90% of the selling price. I guess this would mean
that $30 would be the lowest minimum bid...

The problem here might be in the confusion all of these formulas may
    create...

    Comments welcome..

    ----

As one of the workers at this auction, the BIGGEST problem I had was
that there was no order in which we took items. As a result, many,
many, many people pulled me aside and asked for their items to be sold
next. I am going to try to change this for next year... The only way
that makes sense is to show the items in the order that they arrived
    at the auction.

    cheers,
    jeff

19.27Not my cup of teaSNAX::SMITHI FEEL THE NEEDWed Oct 17 1990 16:0012
My only problem with this system is that if I pay 10 cents to buy
back something I already own, I've paid too much.

Each item being put up for bid should have a minimum price the owner
will accept for that item. The minimum is announced when the item goes
up for bid. A few minutes is allowed for someone to make a bid
hopefully starting at the minimum. If bids are made, but are still
below minimum, the owner is simply asked if he will accept that amount.
If the answer is no, his plane (or whatever) is handed back to him and
the next item is put up. The whole process takes a couple of minutes.

19.28CRRC Auction resultsKAY::FISHERStop and smell the balsa.Thu Oct 18 1990 17:50272
Results from the CRRC Auction on Wednesday 18-Oct-1990.

The good parts.
Lots of friends to meet and greet.
Met Mark Antry for the first time - tho briefly.
Got rid of some more junk.

The bad parts.
Hot and stuffy - but not as bad as last weekend.
  Poor policy concerning min bids.
  Poor descriptions given by auctioneer.

Now on the the details:

On Dave Walters advice Kevin Ladd and I stopped at Thackery's to eat first.
It could have been very nice but we we're running late and a bit rushed.

They kept the min bid secret - tho it was written on a piece of paper
and you could examine the item to see what the posted minimum was.
That was not so bad but the way the auctioneer (Fritz Bien) ran things
was normal bidding then "going once"..."going twice"..."NOT sold".

Now what is a guy to do. I was bidding on Chris Schuch's thermal sniffler
and we worked out way up to $40 and the other bidders dropped out and
I got the "going once"..."going twice"..."NOT sold". Hey - what's the
deal - I thought as they immediately started the next item. I didn't
know what the min bid was - if my fellow bidder had bid $45 I would have
bid 50 - etc. I was not done bidding - but everybody quit and I still didn't
win.

The irony is after the auction on the way out I ask Chris Schuch why
he "didn't want my money :-)" and he starts telling about the interference
that he gets on the sniffler when he turns on his transmitter. We talked
about the details of this for a few minutes and I thought I better not
make an offer after all.

But - I saw the same thing happen time and time again. Somebody would
bid up to a price and get the "going once"..."going twice"..."NOT sold".

Sometimes - not always - Fritz would ask the bidder if he would accept
the highest bid - apparently it was close to the posted min. Partially
because of this and partly because they did not register bidders, sellers,
and items - there were alot of DEALS going on behind the scenes. Everybody
was interested in what the Christian Eagle would go for. But it never went
up for bid - we assume somebody made a deal on the side.

Anyway - on to the items and prices:

MACH I kit (fuselage started) --------------------------------------$ 5NM
Tatone Muffler (pitts style) ---------------------------------------$ 8
It might have gotten more if the
bidders had any idea what it fit
2 ea FF fuselages "Cargo Viking" and "Star Duster" -----------------no bid
Flight Box Battery -------------------------------------------------$33
  Sold by Steve Smith
One fellow was bidding like crazy because he
thought it was a clipped wing cub that one
of the helpers was holding up that he was bidding on.
He was setting next to Steve who was getting excited at
the great price he was getting for his battery.
I won't say his name but his initials are "Dan Weier".
Sig Clipped wing Cup w OS 30 ---------------------------------------$85
The cub looked great - the engine was solid rust.
Magnetic building board --------------------------------------------$35
It would have done better if the
bidders would have known what came with it.
  Any magnets? The whole set?
They never held it up and I have no idea.
Old Futaba .2.160 w 2 servos ---------------------------------------$15
Airtronics QT (plane) ----------------------------------------------$18NM
Now here is a case where after the bidding
the owner wouldn't accept $18. But for several
minutes the auctioneer and the bidders were debating
what kind of plane it was. Where was the owner then?
Duet 1200 without motors -------------------------------------------no bid
Small Fokker D7 kit ------------------------------------------------$40NM
I have no idea what brand or the wing span
  or the recommended engine size.
You could argue that I could have examined the
item before the bidding began - but in most cases you
could not because many items arrived after bidding started.
Royal .60 size Corsair kit mostly framed ---------------------------$20NM
Airtronics Eclipse w battery & radio (ch 50) -----------------------$115
Very nicely done - looked new and straignt and ready to fly
Snark 20T w enya & radio -------------------------------------------$25NM
Top Flight Holy Smoke 40 kit ---------------------------------------$10NM
Large Sport plane w radio and motor --------------------------------$175NM
  Looked good from a distance.
Up close it wasn't built all that
  well - never flown.
Compressor and air brush -------------------------------------------$17NM
I don't know if you could ever
get it clean enough to expect it to work -
  it was a real mess.
Trainair w 4 stroke & Futaba radio ---------------------------------$85
I don't know what brand or size engine
or what size trainair - auctioneer gave no details.
Newport 17C w 4 servos ---------------------------------------------$50NM
  Looked great.
K&B 20 (new) -------------------------------------------------------$30
Jemco Navigator kit (seaplane) -------------------------------------$17NM
Would have been nice to know the wingspan
  and recommended engine size. From
50 feet - it looked like a great kit.
Plane w .049 -------------------------------------------------------$ 5
C.G. Skylark 56 kit formed and ready to cover ----------------------$10
Dremel 4" table saw ------------------------------------------------$35
  Looked unused
  I should have bid
Bob Martin Katie II - 2 meter glider -------------------------------$30
Dan Weier bought this at Sundays Auction for $22
Decided after he go home he really didn't want it.
In general there are never many gliders at these
auctions and the few that do show up and beat up
so anything that looks like it will fly bring a
  decent price.
Schulter(sp) Helo --------------------------------------------------no bid
7 cans of paint ----------------------------------------------------$5NM
C.G. Skylark 56 kit finished with new wing completed ready to cover-$17

By now everybody is milling around and leaving so we did also.

On the way to the parking lot Jack Buckley flags me down to give
me some drawings of Zeros. They happen to be in a grocery bag full
of plans!

Summary

I sold two dremels.
I bought nothing.
I almost bought a Sniffler.
I got free Zero drawings.
I have a surprise package of plans to look over tonight.

See you all at the 495th Auction in February.

19.29There's no justiceHPSPWR::WALTERThu Oct 18 1990 21:0825
More detail on the auction: I ended up buying the EZ Laser for $80. I wanted to
do it "officially" but the seller insisted on doing it on the sly. I was about
to walk up to Eric The Treasurer and donate my honest $8 when I thought back to
the pounding I took on the Kadet ($30??!! And DW2 sold that sorry excuse for a
glider for $30 as well??!! There's no justice!). I turned around and sat down.
(I fully expect Eric to show up at my office with Guido The Leg Breaker looking
for his $8.)

I did a lot of soul searching before buying the Laser. Then Charlie Watt, bless
his soul, offered to lend me a .60 engine to put in it, and that flipped my bit.
I hope to have it flying by next weekend.

I also sold my glider to a friend before the auction. I think I would have
gotten much more for it if was put up during the "buying frenzy" phase of the
auction, but at least this way I know it's in good hands, kept in the family
so to speak.

So my net for the night was a loss of one plane, and a loss of $10. Could have
been worse. Heck, this is a hobby, we're not SUPPOSED to make money in it.

Dave

PS: If anyone is interested in that Flying Buddy Flight Box, let me know! It
has a pair of wheels and a collapsable handle, lists for $60, first $20 offer
takes it. Shipping not included (it's not light).

RE: the last few

How about this for handling owners min bids...

Start the bidding at the owner's min bid. If somebody wants it at that price
then fine, the bidding goes up from there. If nobody bids then find out up
front whether the owner will lower his min bid. If the owner won't lower the
bid then it's a no-sale. If he does then loop back and ask for bids again.
If there are still no bids after two iterations then call it a no-sale.

The process would look something like...

FOR ALL ITEMS TO AUCTION DO BEGIN
    RETRYS = 0
BID = OWNER'S INITIAL MIN BID
    WHILE RETRYS < 2 AND NOT SOLD THEN BEGIN  {NO-SALE IF RETRYS EXCEED 2}
IF ANY BIDDERS AT THE CURRENT MIN BID THEN BEGIN
	    TAKE BIDS
	    SOLD TO HIGHEST BIDDER
	END
	ELSE BEGIN
IF OWNER WILL LOWER MIN BID THEN BEGIN
		BID =  NEW MIN BID
	    END
	    ELSE BEGIN
NO-SALE, GO TO NEXT ITEM TO AUCTION
	    END
	END
        RETRYS = RETRYS + 1
    END
END

The limit of two iterations will keep the min bid from being lowered a dollar at
a time until the item sells. If the owner is really interested in selling the
item then he'll have to make a "meaningful" drop in the min bid since he only
has two chances. It seems to me that this method has some advantages.
The owner stays in "control" of the minimum amount which he will accept (no
B17s being sold for $2). There is never bidding happening below the min bid so
there won't be a bunch of bidding followed by the owner refusing to sell (less
wasted time). The limit on min bid lowering should separate out those who are
interested in selling from those who are not (less wasted time). Does this
sound reasonable?

The bidding under min bids makes since when you consider the psychology
of bidding.

If an owner sees that SEVERAL people are interested in the 40-50
dollar range then he may reconsider his min of $100 as wishful thinking.

Also if you bid $2.00 for something you have a tendency to keep
going further than if the bidding had started out at $20 in the first
place. That is you feel that "One more bid" won't kill you.

19.36495th Auction resultsKAY::FISHERStop and smell the balsa.Wed Feb 06 1991 15:44259
Details of the 495th Auction last night.

Started approx 7:30 PM and we left as it was still winding down at
approx 11:00 PM

DECies attending were

Steve Smith
Dan Snow
Lamar Phillips
Glenn Cozzens
George Mills
Bob Glorioso
Kevin Ladd
and me.

Did I miss anybody?

There were more nice planes than usual and less good engines than
usual - for instance there was only one 4 stroke engine and lots
of K&B's and Cox .049s.

As I said before I love this auction because it is the most fun
of all the local auctions I have attended.

Legend = dmm = Did not Meet Minimum bid
If a price occurs in front of dmm that means that
the bidding got that high and the auctioneer did
not inform us what the secret minimum bid was.
If a price occurs behind dmm that means that the
minimum bid was that amount and it was not met.
If a price occurs both in front and behind that means
that the first number was bit but the owner demanded
the second number so it did not sell.

Now the real details:

Airtrails Sportster .15 size -------------------------------65 (dmm)
Sullivan Floats .60 size (44") --------------------------------(dmm) 20
2 each Pilot Barnstormers (shabby) --------------------------5 (dmm)

Mermaid ARF flying boat - huge and heavy but looked good ------$100
Kalt Baron .30 helicopter w engine and extra blades looked nice $90
Really - I'm used to the helicopter guys bringing their helos
in with $300 min bids and seeing them all take them home again.
Little Bipe w OS .25 FP --------------------------------------- $26
Swamp buggy w Futaba Attack radio system no servos ------------ $26
Electro Streak (scratch built looked great and very light) ---- $21
George Mills purchased this - I'll rate it as the bargain of
the night. The EZ hinges are stiff? George - I guarantee
the streak can't survive a landing like you put the UHU thru
yesterday! I was ready to bid but I didn't want to bid against
George and artificially raise the price - what a guy huh.
1 pair of skiis -----------------------------------------------(dmm) 20
Flight Line F106 .40 size (not a ducted fan)------------------- $37

Micro welding torch ------------------------------------------- $12
I've always wanted one of those - but probably don't
need one. Anyway as it was going up for bid George Mills
was telling me how they always leaked out all the gas
once you first puncture the new bottle.
Field Box ----------------------------------------------------- $54
Quite a healthy price for a field box - but this was a
really nice setup. The owner had brought it in to the
495th meeting a couple of years ago for show and tell
and was planning on releasing plans and writing an article
  for magazines.
58" span trainer ---------------------------------------------- $60
Rossi .40 new -------------------------------------------------(dmm) 50
Andrews Aeromaster .61 Super Tiger w Futaba radio -------------(dmm) 250

Royal .40 (1 good one, 1 for parts) --------------------------- $30

Deluxe power panel new ---------------------------------------- $20
Electric Cub without motor ------------------------------------ $18
Dummas Swamp buggy w OS .25 fp w 2 ch radio -------------------(dmm) 65

I must have been sleeping thru this - I need 11x7 props.
11 each Master Airscrew 10x6 props ---------------------------- $11.50
Telemaster 66 w OS .35 ---------------------------------------- $70
Could have probably gotten more if he removed the engine.
The plane looked good - the engine was all black.
Shop Smith 18" Jig Saw on floor stand - like new --------------$135
This thing was great - it had to be worth twice the price.
Dirty Birdy 40 ------------------------------------------------ $43
Dan Snow's Original Design HLG -------------------------------- $13
Steve Smith's CAP-21 .45 size --------------------------------- $50
Electro Streak ------------------------------------------------ $45
I purchased this. After looking at George Mills $21 streak
during the break I was more than interested in the next one.
This one has a motor and a really pretty MonoKote scheme.
Maybe now I can stop flying that electric slug Thermal Charger
  and have some fun?
Radio junk, 8 servos, 4 rx's, trays, horns, etc. -------------- $20
Kraft 4 ch radio ----------------------------------------------(dmm) 40
.40 size floats ----------------------------------------------- $23

Thunder Tiger .25 ---------------------------------------------(dmm) 25

Steve Smiths Fiesta -------------------------------------------(dmm) 40
High wing trainer .10-.15 size -------------------------------- $22
Enya .45 ------------------------------------------------------ $5
Didn't look great but for five bucks what the heck.
2 ea Cox .049s ------------------------------------------------ $6
Flair Attila kit .10-.20 size ---------------------------------(dmm) 25
Aeromaster -------------------------------------------------10 (dmm) 15
This was the worst job of covering you have ever seen.
It got a lot of laughs. I was telling Kevin that is
looks awful but it probably flies great. He agreed but
said you would have to wear those glasses with the eyebrows
and nose so that nobody would think you were the builder.
The funny thing the owner was setting directly behind us
listening to this criticism but we didn't know it at the time.
After the laughing calmed down and somebody actually bid $10
he wouldn't sell it for less than $15. The crowd gave him a
hard time and he got up and took his wrinklemaster home.
Dan Snow's original design Widget .35-.40 size ---------------- $25
Carl Goldberg Anniversary Edition Cub w Super Tiger .60 -------(dmm)
  and with a Futaba radio
Box of Balsa -------------------------------------------------- $6
2 each Sky Coat iron on trim ----------------------------------(dmm) 10
  Never seen this stuff before
Dave Brown Flight Simulator program for Apple IIe ------------- $31
Bob Glorioso got this. I was speculating at the time that
Apple clones are so cheap now that you could almost justify
purchasing one just to go with the simulator.
Gentle Lady modified and in sad shape ------------------------- $24
2 ea Cox .049 ------------------------------------------------- $4
1 mason jar full of Lead -------------------------------------- $1
  Yes - I bought that.
EZ Super Star, foam wing .45 size ----------------------------- $42
Cox Cessna Cardinal Electric w motor & charger & battery ------ $14

Rohm 90 degree rotating retracts (mains) ----------------------(dmm) 40
EZ Electric glider ARF w Futaba radio w electronic speed ------$126
also w ACE AC/DC charger. Great support equipment
and I kinda like the Futaba receivers with the built
  in speed control.
Balsa USA Fly Baby, huge looked great ------------------------- $64
Tool Box ------------------------------------------------------ $2.50
Rearwin Speedster w K&B .45 looked nice -----------------------(dmm)
Sig Kobra w OS (.35?) ----------------------------------------- $37
2 ea tuned pipes & headers ------------------------------------ $15
  1 for K&B .40, 1 for Super Tiger .35
Aeromaster w HP .61 PDP w perry pump --------------------------(dmm)

Magnum .25 (needs needle valve) ------------------------------- $5
  Lamar Phillips got this one.
Enya .09 ------------------------------------------------------ no bid
3 old Futaba FPS16 servos ------------------------------------- $36
  Imagine that!
Box of junk w 6 fuel tanks, etc. ------------------------------ no bid
Aluminum Spinner ---------------------------------------------- $4
Glider wing - badly warped ------------------------------------ $5
High start ---------------------------------------------------- $10
This was in a white plastic bucket. Sound familiar?
Didn't we see this at the CRRC Auction?
.25 size retracts ---------------------------------------------(dmm) 15
I offered $5 but the owner wasn't interested.
Pitts style muffler ------------------------------------------- $9
100 bottles of dope ------------------------------------------- $8

It was getting late and the only thing coming up that I had
any interest in was a prop balancer that Jack Buckley brought
in so we left.

Well - there were certainly bargains to be had.
So of some of the DECies present purchased something I missed
or had some other observations - how about a reply.
Remember there is another auction this Sunday in Enfield CT.

the 495 auctions are usually the most entertaining (due to joe the auctioneer).

why i remember last tuesday the first several items didnt even get a bid:
nobody wanted to spend any money and joe the auctioneer was starting to suffer.
finally after the 4th or so unsuccessful attempt to sell an item, he turns
to one of his helpers and says "tough crowd tonight, hand me something thats
already wrecked".

later the crowd warmed up and at one point the bidding on a very mediocre plane
shot up into the sixties. kay mumbles something about the plane looking pretty
good. i must've had a disgusted look on my face cause joe looks and points
right at me and says "what are you frowning about!" the surrounding hta crowd
got a good laugh.

but perhaps the best moment (nothing will ever top last year when dave walter
was bidding on steve's battery when he thot he was bidding on a nice plane)
was near the end. joe holds up a glider wing and immediately starts
complaining that its covered with some goo. then he notices (we'd all already
noticed from the middle of the room) that the wing has, in his words, "about 20
degrees of washin". he wasnt exagerating. so the bidding starts with george
mills blurting "2 dollars". after what seemed like a full minute of joe chiding
george ("did you just fall off a turnip truck?") and hysterical laughter, the
bidding continued. it went up to 5 bucks and it wasnt george. go figure.
19.47CRRC Auction ResultsKAY::FISHERIf better is possible, good is not enough.Thu Oct 17 1991 14:38152
Here are the results of the CRRC Auction last night.

I only took one item to sell - My Berliner-Joyce P16.
After the last crash I almost put it in the trash.
Then I decided to fix it up and hang it over my office.
Then it started looking pretty good so I decided to
make it flyable again and save it for an auction.

It had an OS 45 FSR in it that although it had one
new bearing and ran - it needed a piston and sleeve
to be reliable.

I left one servo in the plane because the aileron
servo was buried deep in the gull wing.

Anyway I was hoping to get a hundred and would have
settled for $5.00.

As it turns out a guy made me a parking lot offer
of $180 so I accepted. He was going to collect it
and not fly it.

So into the auction I go with an extra $180 to spend...

So below I will post some of the results - I missed a few
and let me apologize in advance for missing interest items
such as those sold or purchased by fellow noters.

It wasn't quite as lively as some previous auctions but
I came away better than usual.

19.50Auctions aren't rationalUPSENG::WALTERThu Oct 17 1991 20:2117
Auctions never seem to follow any rational process. As Kay mentioned,
my Laser 200 could only raise a $25 bid, and my minimum was $50, which
I thought was even a pretty good deal. After the auctioneer set it
aside, the one guy who bid on it came up to me and asked what my
minimum was. I told him $50, and he took it.

Later, my old, beat up Flinger handlaunch was bid up to $35. My minimum
    was $15!

    Who can figure?

But you know what really frosted me? The guy who got a bid of $55 for
his Dremel belt sander and refused to sell. I bought one NEW for $75!!
    What do people expect, anyway?

19.55Stolen chopper to watch for at New England auctionsRANGER::REITHJim (RANGER::) Reith - LJO2Wed Mar 04 1992 10:3212
Not really an action announcement but hopefully someone will see it at
one in the future. Our club president had a chopper stolen out of his
car. It was a Kalt Baron MX with a blue and red canopy, an Enya .30ss
engine, and a gold cased Futaba 6ch with a Futaba gyro. If you see or
hear about it, please give Art "Red" Lavallee a call (the owner). It
may turn up in the greater New England auctions.

Red's number is (508) 852-8200 (works in a hobby shop 11-7 weekdays) or
    at home (508) 754-7511

I figure that with the coverage of this notesfile, it was worth a quick
    posting.

Spent yesterday taking in the Salem NH Barnstormers Annual Auction.
Myself and a fellow club member made the trip up to salem NH from
Springfield in about 2 hours. Normal time for me. It was interesting
seeing the little bit of Salem I did see. I used to live in Salem back
in the early 80's, and it's where I got my start in RC. Sure has
changed. Particularly the Filene's mall adjacent to Rockingham race
way. Heck that used to be a favorate lunch time RC field.

Anyways, we took in Bill's hobby's (that also new to me and salem)
and then went to the auction. There were some good, some bad and some
interesting ites. Bargains galore. I ended up buying two sport ships.
The first is a small home designed seamaster type flying boat. It has
almost 600 sq's of wing and looks like it was designed for a 25 sized
engine. The piped 25 will do nicely. It's covered in monocote 100%
so I hope to fly it and if it fly's well I'll strip it and fibergals
the boat and put new fabric on the wing.
The second purchase was a Balsa USA Phaeton II bipe. This has seen
betted days but was still in good shape. Coverin in fabric and painted
cream, blue and red. The covering was loose but the plane was clean.
Last night about 15 minutes work fixed the covering and she's ready for
an enging and radio. I'll be installing an ASP61 with a DAvis Diesel
muffler and a 347. Should fly fine. These will allow me to still
fly and have more than one ship in the air while I'm working of the
    Flybaby.

19.57CRRC Auction this Wednesday 21-OctQUIVER::WALTERTue Oct 20 1992 21:0612
Just a reminder (kinda late, I realize) that the CRRC auction will be
held this Wednesday night at the GTE plant in Waltham, Massachusetts.
Don't have time now to enter directions; they must be in this file
    somewhere.

It usually opens for browsing at 7:00, with action to begin around 7:30
or so. The club takes 10% of the selling price of an item; there's no
charge for an item that doesn't sell. You can set a minimum selling
    price.

Basically - you just missed auction season - but there is a swap shop scheduled
for the thing in Augusta Maine this weekend. I don't have any details handy
here today but could look it up tonight if your interested. Most likely
I assume your not willing to go that far on this short notice.

There is also the Wilmington hobby Expo coming up the weekend of
May 1st and 2nd. I believe they will have a swap shop also.

With the price of brand new radio's at about $120 dollars, I assume
your not willing to spend that much??????? What about servo's, receiver
battery packs, etc.. The swap shop type radio's don't always come with
this stuff. If they do, and there in good shape, you'll pay $75.00 or
more. Now the price between "used" and new isn't that great. Plus you
only have the persons word that it works.

    Just some food for thought.

In addition to what Steve said, if you aren't up to speed regarding
if equipment is narrow band or not, you would again be better off going
with a new radio. Otherwise you could end up with a radio that needs
to be sent in to be converted $$$ (or worse, can't be upgraded ).

As Steve said, with new radios not being very expensive, new is
probably the best way to go. Unfortunately, it isn't cheap to do this
hobby in a safe and reasonable manner. You don't need to spend $1000
to get a plane in the air, but you will spend hundreds.

                                                                Dan

    Steve,
One more thing - a new radio has new batteries. Nicads tend to
need replacement every three years or so. The cost for a TX and RX
nicad is about half the cost of a complete radio system. You are
better off buying a new 4 channel rig. You want dependable radio
equipment in this hobby and I have seen very few good deals on used
    radio equipment.

Up in Maine there are no radio signals to compete with. Right!.

Best advice: Buy a JR FM 4. You'll be compatico with a whole bunch of

OK everyone. This is a good time to clean out that cluttered workshop.
Do you have a kit you've been going to start building for the last
three years. Bring it in and sell it. How about that engine
collecting dust that you have no more use for. Somebody will want it.
What about all those accessories you've collected that just never find
a use? Somebody else needs them NOW!

Do you need a radio and don't want to pay full price at Tower? You'll
find it at the auction. Are you looking for the "small stuff" that
"nickles and dimes" you to death? It'll be here, and at bargain prices.

Be there. This is your chance to sell and buy to get ready for the winter

I didn't realize the CRRC auction was so close to the Flying Eagles
auction until I saw the previous note. I hope they both get good
attendance. The CRRC club decided to hold the auction on a weekend
instead of the meeting night to bring in a bigger audience. It remains
to be seen if that strategy works. But this I know: there will be at
least ONE Spirit at this Auction, teal and transparent yellow, only

The instructions say that 8 ozs. of ballast has a dramatic effect
on performance with regards to speed and penetration. A week's
worth of leisurely evenings and you could add flaps AND spoilers.

I'll bet it would be a totally different airplane.

Actually, the reason it was moved to Sunday was more people could make

19.80Good auction56821::WALTERMon Oct 17 1994 16:1527
The CRRC auction went off without a hitch yesterday. It was well
attended (>90 payed the $1 entrance fee), there was a pretty good
selection of planes and engines, and we cleared everything out in
just 2 1/2 hours. People seemed to be in a buying mood. An Ultimate
went early in the auction for well over $200, so that seemed to get
everyone primed. There were 3 Sig Wonders there, one of them
beautifully built by Wayne Nelson. They must be getting popular. Ron
Gagner tried to sell off an F-20 ducted fan, but the bidding only got
up to $270, well below his $400 minimum. It appeared to be a good deal
even at $400. At least 3 compressors got sold (are there that many
people bagging wings?). I sold my Scooter with OS .40 FP for $80, so
I was happy. All told there were more than 100 items auctioned off.

We kept an eye out for private sales, and made people aware that it
wouldn't be tolerated. I think it worked; there appeared to be very
few side sales, and even when it did happen, the parties involved
reported the earnings to the club and gave us the commission.

I was keeping the books on each item sold. A total of $4140 changed
hands, with CRRC taking 10%. The club also made about $100 profit on
the raffle and door prizes. Since the room only cost about $75, it
turned out to be quite a successful auction. That's a nice place to
have it. Plenty of room for planes and seating, a stage and sound
system for the auctioneer, and a nearby bar to loosen the wallets.

Dave you bug dummy - they were selling for and with air brushes :-)

Anyway - I also attended and brought my wife Pat with. She managed to
do her homework during the auction and ignore most everything with a couple
of exceptions...

1. I wish in the future they would not allow smoking. There were 2 guys
in the front row (two rows ahead of us) who saved a chair between them
for their ashtray. They managed to fill it and empty it about 3 times
during the auction. The ventilation system did a remarkable job with
their mess - but you should have seen the volume of smoke going up
    all afternoon.

2. Pat says Lincoln Ross should not give up his day job to be an auctioneer!

============================================================================

Anyway - as always I kept notes and can act as your cub reporter.

After the normal pre-auction scouting trip I had a very small list
of items that I had to bid on. One was Dave Walters Airtronics radio.
He had a channel 34 (my glider channel) Tx with a RCD micro receiver.
Also a couple of servos and charger included.

I had to bid just to be sure nobody walked away with the receiver for
less than it was worth.

Also there was a NIB 1/4 scale SIG Clipped wing cub with wheels. The
wheels alone cost around $25. The owner had the kit marked $110 min
and the kit normally sells for $130 - so I was gonna keep an eye out
for a bargain. But it ended not not making min bid - I think it stopped
at about $60. But I looked for it after and I think the guy made a deal
on the side with someone as it never came up again.

I brought 3 items with me to sell. A Mini-Challenger HLG, a 23 channel
CB radio and a VCR Plus. The CB is for jawing on your way to the WRAM
show. The VCR Plus is for recording a Patriots game while you are flying.

Anyway - here goes a brief run down to give you a feel for the prices
and what you missed.

Unless otherwise noted the planes were complete and ready for engine
and radio installation. If it says kit it is a new in box kit. NM
means that the bid didn't make min - therefor was not a sale.

A few items before now a third auctioneer took over and had a gruff
voice and held the mic real close and you couldn't understand a word
he said.

Up to now Lincoln Ross and Fritz Bien had been taking turns at auctioneering
and did a credible job. I prefer Fritz because he has better jokes.

You will notice that my VCR plus and CB radio aren't on the list.
For some reason the guys taking stuff up to the auctioneer never took
them up - they were left setting on a table in the back - so I just
took them home and will save them for Jeff's auction next Saturday.

===============
Summary

Good bargains were there for sport planes, engines, and air brushes.
Quality of the planes and engines seemed very high this year.

Sorry for all the things that are incorrect and spelling.

Your right of course - it was a mini-Bird.
I must have gotten confused when I bagged the wings with my air brush :-)

Bottom line is - auctions are great fun.
Looking forward to Jeff's auction next Saturday.

That was my Clipped Wing Cub. They didn't retry anything that didn't
make minimum bid as far as I could tell. I took it home with me. If you
are interested make me an offer I can't refuse (and as you noted I
refuse anything less than $110 :^) ).

19.95Flying Eagles Auction resultsGAAS::FISHERBXB2-2/G08 DTN 293-5695Mon Oct 24 1994 19:22108
I attended the NH Flying Eagles auction Saturday and as always I kept notes
as your cub reporter.

There were many less planes and engines than the CRRC auction but still fun.
The auctioneer did a very good job.

Some guys were whining about starting the bids at "min bid" price but I
liked it. It is so frustrating to bid by 1 dollar for 5 minutes to have
the auctioneer say - sorry - not close to min.

There seemed to be one guy who managed to bypass the system and they
were selling many little parts out of his box of junk - I doubt he
paid the club $1.00 per item as per the rules - fortunately most of
his stuff (mostly mufflers) didn't sell.

Here is a brief run down to give you a feel for the prices and what you missed.

Unless otherwise noted the planes were complete and ready for engine
and radio installation. If it says kit it is a new in box kit. NM
means that the bid didn't make min - therefor was not a sale.

This coming Sunday, February 19th, is the annual Lazy Loopers auction.
So far, myself, Eric, Charlie, and Jack are going. This is usually a
pretty good auction with pizza/beer and some pretty good stuff. If
everything goes right, I'll have the Tippo there for sale.

    Anyone else planning on going??????
19.97RANGER::REITHThu Feb 16 1995 16:445
My buddy George Dainis is going. I had considered it but I've been being bugged
about getting the taxes done so I don't think it's a good idea. I agree it's
usually a good auction.

What's the date on the CMRCM auction?

The sale of Peter Monroe's R/C gear is happening this sunday (April 9th).
Anyone that knew Peter can vouch for him having lots of quality stuff. It's
going to be sold at 14 marshal street in Holliston, MA.

Call Phil for details (508) 429-6864

I have no financial interest in this sale, I'm simply posting information as I
was asked.

The private comment forwarded to me was "Jim, you need to see what is there to
believe it. 5 YS 120's, Planes from 1/3 scale to funflys, engines, planes,

He are the directions (From Marlboro).
Take 85 S through Hopkinton. You're going to go about 2 miles past
    135. What you do is pass a blinking yellow light and Hopkinton H.S..
At the next blinking yellow light, turn left. This is Chestnut St. Go
about another 2 miles and you will see a "road narrows" sign. About
200 yards after that is his street (Marshall) on the right. His house

What does a new 347 go for? What's a good price for a used one?
Phil also said that some of the radios had 2 or 3 receivers included.
Most of them were HAM band I believe (which is perfect for me AKA
kb8jdo). He also said that he took the average cost of having a
frequency change off the prices for the HAM band radios. Oh yeah, and

Just as a point of information on the HAM band radios, they basically
can't be converted. The bottom line is that you need to buy a new RF
module for the TX and REPLACE the receiver.

idea what you look like! I guess we'll be the two fighting for the

went pretty fast and the 347 on 72Mhz went fast, but the HAM band 347's
weren't moving. It must not have been a good deal when you take into
account the price of a new module. I also picked up an extra airborne
battery pack and 3 extra receivers. I did get the one without manual
(he gave me a 388 manual istead), so I'll need your help Steve! It
also came with one of those "add a trickle" things for the charger.
All in all, I am happy with my purchase. Oh yeah, my carb for the
gremlin comes in today, so all I need is three servos and it's gremlin
    time!

I had a feeling they would make out pretty well on that sale. I wonder
how long the sale went for. I got to place another face with a name.
I met Wayne as was he inspecting and asking questions about a 347. I
didn't say anything until he mentioned he had a HAM license.

Re: the conquest. Your right! And to think that I was using my gremlin
as a paper weight! Actually, I think I will tap off the pots inside
and use it as a PC joystick. That would really work well for flight
    simulator!

    Andy,

Sorry we didn't get to talk more, but when you spotted me, I was busy
spending my money, and I tend to get a little single minded :^).

    I picked up a used YS 1.20, a JR 50 MHz RF module and 2 receivers. I
guess I wasn't careful enough when I was looking at the model numbers of
the receivers, I thought I had 2 NER-627-XZ RXs, it turns out that 1
was an NER-627X which is an older PCM Rx and isn't compatible with my
radio. Jim R, seems to think it may work with a 347 Tx, if not, maybe
I can find someone who can make use of it...
