To answer a question awhile back, the 495th meets on the first tuesday
of every month, at the first unitarian church in chelmsford on rt.
110, approx. 7:30 PM. The next meeting will be Dec.1st. Come on

    re .34: Finding fields

Most R/C fields are at the end of long dirt roads - the Acton one
    is the exception around here.

CMRCM field is off 135 just north of Rte 9, follow signs to the
Mass. Fish and Game. But there's a locked gate at the start of a
1/2 mile road down into the place, and we're supposed to keep it
locked, so you really ought to go with a club member who can show
you where it is and take you in.

CRRC is not so difficult, because you already found it. Yes, it's
the US Army Fort Devens annex on your left as you go toward Sudbury.
You go through the gate (if they point a gun at you, stop). Turn
left immediately inside the gate and watch for the small signs to
the R/C field. Technically, you may be asked to show a field pass
to get through the gate but I've never had to show mine yet.

Good luck! And give me a call Sunday afternoon if you want to go
out, I may be going to one of the two fields. My number is 562-6676.

Try the Flying Tigers out of Derry. They are an excellent training
club and have a very friendly membership. President Moe Grandmaison
and VP Scott Fuller can usually be found at the flying field near
Television station Channel 50 off Rt. 28 in Derry (just about 3
miles south of 93). For more information stop in to see Joe LaCourt
in his shop, J&S Hobby off route 28.

Call me if you need further info or stop by MKO2-2/I9

I'm a member of the Flying Tigers. Either contact me off-line for info or
drop by the field. Tuesdays and thursdays are currently designated as
training nights so Moe, Scott, myself and others are usually there.

Limited info on Southern NH R/C Club...

Well, I am no longer a member of this club, but I do know many people
in the club. When I belonged, this club was very active in pattern
but from what I have heard, there is less emphasis on that now. There
are a couple of superb builders in this club, Irv Searle (usually
performs at all of the big scale meets) and Maurice Theriault (doesn't
compete, but scratchbuilds superstrong, superlight planes. He also
designed and build a number of "suitcase" planes, including a twin!).

I believe they still meet the second Tuesday of each month, @7:30 at
Hudson Memorial School, in Hudson, NH.

Their field is located in Litchfield, NH....

    (poor directions to follow)
Take Rt 3A to Litchfield. If you are travelling north, go past the
new golf driving range. On your right, you will pass a small plaza
(2/3 stores) then a bakery (Fassets?). Just past the bakery there
is a sign for Litchfield Sand and Gravel. Turn right off of Rt 3A.

Coming from the North, turn left before the bakery, at the sign for
    Litchfield Sand and Gravel.

Immediately after turning off 3A, bear left, then bear right. The
road turns to gravel/dirt. You are at the opening of a large field...

Maybe 100 yards along this road, you will see a dirt road to the left
(1 lane, dirt tracks with grass growing inbetween). Take this to
the end and you are at the field.

That is the best I can do... I have only been to the field once. If
anyone has better directions, please post them.

    cheers,
    jeff

15.56CRRC meeting place --- directions to GTE WalthamHPSPWR::WALTERMon Oct 15 1990 22:0126
I will attempt to give directions to GTE in Waltham,MA from memory.
By the way, for anyone interested, I will be there with a Kadet Mk II
(no engine or radio) that's in respectable shape, and a Top Flite
Metrick 2 meter glider (no radio) which is in very nice shape.

	Directions to GTE plant:

Take Rt. 128 to the Winter St/ Waltham exit. You want to go west on
Winter St. from the interchange. If you're coming from the north, you
just take the exit before the bridge. From the south I think you have
to go under the bridge and then exit onto Wyman St and keep turning
right until you go over the bridge.

Once on Winter St. you will go by a mall then come to a set of lights.
Go straight through the lights (don't bear left) and within a couple
hundred yards you will see the resevoir on your right. Very soon after,
Sylvan Rd will be on your left with a big sign for GTE laboratories.
Turn left there. You will drive past the building (which is on your
right) until you see a right turn which goes into an inner court yard
with some parking. That's the place. Follow the crowd to the entrance
where you have to sign in at the guard desk.

I hope I got these directions right. I come in a back way and rarely
use this route. But remember this: it's west of Rt. 128, and no more
	than 2 minutes drive.

Does anyone know of a club in the Fitchburg/Leominster area? I just
moved from southern NH area(Milford) where I am a member of the Flying
Eagles. I'd like to find a club that has a field a little closer, instead
of making the trek back to our club field in Merrimack, NH.

    Thanks in advance,

    Lamar,

I live in Leominster. The closest field is in Gardner. I believe
the club is called The Barnstormers. Maybe Dan Weir can give you some
more info. I would also suggest looking into the CMRCM club that fly's
out of Westboro. It's a half hour from Leominster. The club meets in
Berlin which is 15 minutes away.

The Gardner club has its field on the Wildlife refuge area behind
NCCI prison. Unfortunately, the club is at its max membership level of
75 people. It is also closed (except Sundays) for Hunting season as of
this Saturday. The field is again open 7 days/week starting in January.
The only alternative would be to be put on a waiting list, and hope for
an opening. If you are interested in further information on the club,
feel free to contact me my mail or phone.
As Steve mentioned, the Westboro club is an alternative. Another
alternative may be the Quinnepoxit cub in Lancaster, Ma. Dan Miner
is a member of this club and would have more info.

                                      Hope this helped.

    ref -.2:

The CMRCM club in Westboro is not and has not been at its membership
limit of 200. We presently have about 180 members and we fly on state
land behind the Microelectronics Center off of 135 in Westboro. The
club has been at this site for 30 years. We are also closed during
hunting season except for Sundays. (through the end of november)
Access is limited during the winter season.

is probably much easier to get to than Merrimack would be. He could fill you
in on the details.

15.72NH: Merrimack: Flying Eagles RC updated field infoABACUS::RYDERperpetually the bewildered beginnerFri Jul 26 1991 01:3251
The Southern New Hampshire Flying Eagles R/C Club meets a few hundred
yards from MKO on the first Wednesday at 7:30. Directions follow.

The 73+ members of the club have two fields: one in Merrimack less
than 3 miles from MKO and one in New Boston (north of Milford NH).

Dues are $30 for the first year --- $20/yr thereafter. There are less
expensive categories for juniors, elders, and additional family members.
Fuel is available through the club at a discount.

Directions to the fields and the meeting place:

The Merrimack field is about 2.5 miles from MKO.

Looking east from exit 11 you can sometimes see planes in the air.

North on Continental Blvd and under the turnpike. Straight through
the lights at Rt 3 and down the small hill. Go left at the T (100
yards and you'll be forced left again after 30 yards). At the first
driveway [on the right] take the hairpin turn to the right and back
and down. Go under the railroad tracks and the field is there on
your left parallel to and adjacent to the tracks.

The New Boston field is about nine miles north of Milford, NH

From Milford center, go north on Rt 13 across the bridge adjacent
to the center. Follow Rt 13 north and up Mont Vernon hill and
through Mont Vernon village towards New Boston. About three miles
north of Mont Vernon village look for Barss's variety store and BP
gas station on the east side of Rt 13. Go 1.4 miles past Barss's
and turn left onto South Hill Road. (If you are coming from the
north, South Hill Road is 1.8 miles south of New Boston village.)

Go 1/4 mile on South Hill Road (past the three houses on the left)
and turn left into the last driveway before the first hay field on
the left. The flying field is behind this first field and extends
behind the houses. The runway is roughly parallel to the road.

The field is about 400 yards long and over one hundred yards wide.

Meeting place, The Horseshoe Fish & Game Club in Merrimack, NH:

Exit the MKO complex going North on Continental Blvd. Within a
hundred yards there are two small buildings on the left with a
small road on the far side of the second. Somehow turn left there
(a simple left turn is illegal). Follow that winding road for a few
hundred yards into the woods, bearing always to the left. It will
turn from pavement to dirt, bend around a house on the right, and
immediately lead you to the club parking lot on the left.

Right at lights for Route 286 West
Pass over I95
First right onto Congress St.
2nd right onto Folly Mill Road
2nd left onto Elmwood Rd.
1/4 mile on left is opening to field

When you exit off I95 you are only about a half mile or so from
the field so all these turns come up fast.

The 286 exit is the exit to take for Hampton Beach so if the
weather is nice I usually go there first and drop the family
off at the beach for the day and have breakfast at "The Old Salt".

The family then looks forward to the Cape Ann competitions
but the last two years they have made it much later in the fall
and less like beach weather.

Find your trusty Maine map and locate "Upper Glouchester", it's on route
202/100/4, about half way between Auburn and Gray. Near the center of
town you will see a flashing orange light over the road, if you are
traveling North, from Gray take a left at that light; traveling south
from Auburn turn right at the light. You are now on the Bald Hill road,
the turn off for the field is on the left, 1.1 miles from the light.
Continue along the Bald Hill Road, over a small bridge, after the
bridge, look for "Trotters Park", (horse racing track) on your left.
Continue past the track and under the turnpike, then look for a sign
showing the field entrance. The road to the field winds through a
gravel pit, don't get discouraged, just follow the road. We have an
area for camping suitable for up to 20 campers, trailers, etc. (No
hook-ups). See you there.

15.78Since I typed these in for the Gremlin contest, here's detailed directionsRANGER::REITHJim HANNAH:: Reith DSG1/2E6 235-8039Thu May 14 1992 12:2432
Here's directions to the Ware field.

From the turnpike, take exit 8 in Palmer and go North on Rt 32 when you
leave the tolls. Follow Rt32 until it joins Rt9 in the center of Ware.
Outside Ware Rt9 heads towards Worcester and you want to stay on Rt32.
You will go down a hill from Rt9 and it will flatten out. On your left
you'll see a power substation and then where the trees thin out you'll
be able to see the field. Ahead on the left hand side you'll come to a
road (left side only) with a median to keep right of. This is 1/2 to 1
mile from where Rt9 split off and is the first actual road off to the
left. Turn left in here and go over the railroad tracks and bridge and
the field is on the left separated from the road by a fence. We'll either
have the gate open or someone posted there for people coming into the
field. Please bring your AMA card and a clothes pin style frequency pin
    with you.

From the Sturbridge area (or Exit 9 off the turnpike) take Rt148 north
(you pick it up at the west end of town off Rt20) to Rt9 and then Rt9
west (away from Worcester) until the junction with Rt32. It's about
30-40 minutes from exit 9 off the turnpike. There's a McDonalds and
Burger King on Rt20 in Sturbridge for a comfort stop.

If you come out Rt20 from Auburn (exit 10 off the turnpike) you can
take Rt49 north to Spencer and pick up Rt9 west there. This might be
easier than fighting the Sturbridge tourist traffic to get to Rt148.

From the Greater Worcester area your best bet is to head out Rt9 until
you get to the junction with Rt32, turn right and follow the directions
    above.

From the north... Get a map and find a reasonable way to get down to
    Rt9/Rt32
15.79495th field status?QUIVER::WALTERMon May 18 1992 17:0018
Does anybody know the status of the 495th field in Westford? I'm
refering to the one that is off Rt 225 about 1 mile west of Rt 110. I
stopped by there Friday night and found that the access road has been
replaced by a brand new housing development. At the far side of the
development I found the runway, which had been recently cut. There was
no one there but two geese who appeared to be holding for clearance for
takeoff. (Perhaps they were waiting to rendezvous with Kay's glider?)

It looks like flying still goes on there, but with the houses so close
now I wonder how long they can continue to use the field.

Why am I interested, you may ask? Because I spotted a perfect site for
a gliders only field, but it's less than a mile from the 495th field.
If the 495th ceases operations at their field, I may approach the owner
of this undeveloped land and see if we can make use of it.

15.86Mile Square Park - RC MeccaCIVIC::MARRONEMon Feb 01 1993 15:5851
A week ago, I spent the weekend in the LA area due to back-to-back
business trips. While there, I went to visit the well known Mile
Square Park which is near Huntington Beach (don't remember the actual
town its in). I had heard that there was a spot for RC flying in the
park, and wanted to check it out.

I wasn't ready for what I found. To those who have seen this facility,
you know what I mean. Part of the park includes an old Army airport
with three runways in a triangular configuration. One of these runways
is used for RC airplanes, and provides a _hugh_ flight line that can
accommodate 15 pilots at one time. Their frequency control system is
quite well thought out, with specific frequencies allowed at each
flight position. There is an "impound" at each flight position into
which you must place your radio, and retrieve it when its your turn to
fly. There is a series of very neat fences with protected openings
leading to the runway, and they provided excellent protection to people
in the pits. Most of the flying is done over the flat grassy area in
the middle of the triangle, and there were NO obstructions or trees or
anything to hamper the flying. You could dive your plane towards the
grass and do a low flyby at one foot off the ground and keep it there
for hundreds of feet. There was more room at this field than I have
ever seen with the possible exception of Westover AFB.

Now for the good news. This is a municipal field sponsored by the
town. It is _open_to_the_public_ and you don't need AMA membership,
club membership or insurance to fly there. Just bring your plane in
and fly!!! I spent about five hours there watching the flying,
hobnobbing with the locals, and trading war stories with anyone who
wanted to talk. I met a bunch of really friendly folks there,
including a 76 year old retiree who had logged over 2200 hours in
Corsairs during WWII and who told me he used to practice T&G's at this
    field.

SInce the temperature was a delightful 76 degrees with light breezes, I
soon became very jealous of all those lucky pilots who have access to
such a wonderful facility all year long, and as we all know, it never
rains in southern California!! Never gets cold, either. Then again,
those guys don't have the great experience of flying on skiis! Or
fumbling with the sticks with numb fingers! Or starting cold engines
with ether or WD40! Or recovering from frostbite between flights! NO!
They just don't have any appreciation for the tremendous sacrifices we
make up here in the Northeast Tundra just to get an all-season flyers
patch! To them, its "just another sh...y day in paradise!" Come to
think of it, I could live with that.

I left there with a feeling like I had just been to the Mecca of RC.
Check it out next time your in So. Cal. Its absolutely _outstanding_.

    Regards,
    Joe

15.87Need Name of Club in Teaneck, NJMKOTS3::MARRONEThu Apr 01 1993 18:4414
Yesterday I was in the Marriott Glenpointe Hotel in Teaneck, NJ and
while looking out the window in my room, spotted RC planes flying
across the street. Looked like a nice site with the majority of the
flying done over a body of water, either a small lake or part of a
    river, I couldn't tell which.

At any rate, I'm interested in finding out more about this site and the
club that uses it. Anyone in this notes file know about this flying
site/club? I would like to make contact with them as I travel to
Teaneck frequently and may want to fly there some day.

15.88Drop Zone is no moreQUIVER::WALTERMon Sep 27 1993 17:5719
This weekend was the last opportunity to fly at CRRC's Drop Zone. We
were just informed by Fort Devens that the facility is being closed
next month, and all flying must come to a halt by the end of this month.
This looks bad. In the past, we've lost use of the field mainly due to
personnel changes at the fort, which we eventually were able to remedy
(hit them with enough letters and they cave in). But I have no idea who
will take over the site. There's probably a battle brewing for rights
to the land. Which, by the way, is littered with toxic waste sites that
first need to be cleaned up.

The Charles River club still has its new club field in Medfield. I
haven't visited that one, but I've been told that it's much smaller
than the Zone. Like, you don't want to fly any scale aircraft there,
and it can't support the big glider contests.

    Bummer.

15.94New CRRC fieldQUIVER::WALTERMon Nov 15 1993 18:2853
I had to go down to the south shore Saturday, so I figured I'd include
a pilgrimage to the latest Charles River Club field in Medfield, near
the grounds of the State Hospital. (Why are so many clubs near prisons
and state hospitals? Because the inmates can't bitch at us?) I had
heard from some club members that the field is tight, but you never
really know until you see it yourself.

So, I saw it. It's not too bad! It kind of reminded me of the Central
Mass field, but not quite so open. When you stand at the flight line,
there are trees directly in front of you just a little closer than the
ones at Central Mass, maybe 150 feet away or so. Low passes really have
to be done OVER THE RUNWAY... or you risk shredding the plane through
the forest. Looking to your left, there's a relatively long channel
surrounded by trees that bracket your approach from the left. It's
pretty long, but the plane will be below tree level for much of final,
so visibility could be an issue. To the right, there's plenty of open
space. Compared to Central Mass, landings are probably easier from the
right, about equal from the left, but there's less "sky" owing to the
    closer trees.

I noted to Chris Shuck that there's plenty of room to pull out a winch,
but he whined that the rules state power planes have precedence over
gliders. Ie, no high starts or winches if power fliers are there.
    Bummer.

The field isn't visible from the main road, but it's still close enough
to hear the engines. So people will know it's there. There's a decent
pit area set up, a nice transmitter impound, and the runway is well
cut, although still a little bumpy. All in all, not a bad field. I just
wish it was closer. But, beggars can't be choosers...

    Other activity this weekend
    ---------------------------

Meanwhile, pandemonium still rules at CMRCM. Part way through my third
flight Sunday, I brought the plane down and packed it in because things
were getting too wild for me. While there, I saw Barbara stuff her
trainer in after takeoff (a write off), an older gent flew his trainer
into the trees (little damage), Rene dead sticking his Gremlin, Harvey
shredded his Spirit of '76 into the trees (looked bad), and, the coup
de grace, Fast Eddie screwed up his landing and just about flew his
Stunt Wagon down my throat while I was flying my US-40. I ended up flat
on my back, thanks to a timely warning by Steve Smith, and Eddie flew
his plane through the pits before finally splattering it on the runway.
Barbara and Eric assured me that Eddie would have scored a bull's eye
if I hadn't thwarted his attempt by dropping to the ground. Eddie came
up with the usual lame excuses, but not once did he apologize to me for
nearly rearranging my facial parts. Gr-r-r-r-r!
