252.0. "TELSTAR" by 58432::MARQUES () Fri Aug 07 1987 15:49

    Does anybody have tryed the Royal's Telstar .40?

    It is supposedly a semi-patternship ready to fly out of the box
    very good looking and at a very attractive price.

    Haven't seen one close up, but I certainly like the looks. I,m
    still a novice but it looks like one I want to own later.

    The Telstar .40 is the same thing as an "EZ Cavalier".

    I had a Telstar 25 and it flew great.

252.4Language barrier or am I dumb?RDGCSS::WARWICKSat Aug 08 1987 11:398
    Please forgive me for maybe being stupid - but what is a patternship?

    Is this a colloquial term only used the U.S.

    Regards from a dumb Brit.

    REF. 252.4

    Brian,

    It may have been my fault. That's how we call them up here in Canada.
    They might be called something else in the US or elsewhere.

    I am sure you've seen those usually fast planes flying straight
    across the field. They turn around at both ends using either a
    hammerhead or a half Cuban 8 (most of the time). As they go by,
    they are expected to perform a series of manouveurs, in a pre
    established order, following a pattern. There is where the name
    came from.

    What makes them different from other planes is the design that
    makes them suitable for the pattern they are supposed to fly.
    Things like highly aerodynamic format for little turbulence, the
    proper size of the stabilizer and its distance from the wing so
    that the vertical movements can be as round or as square as possible,
    the rudder of the right size and location for perfect four point
    rolls, etc.

    I hope this helps.

252.6It flies!58432::MARQUESWed Aug 26 1987 17:4432
    I got it.

    The Telstar ready-out-of-the-box is not quite that ready. It took
    me about 15 hours to finish the thing: put the two wing panels
    together, attach the rudder,fin,stabilizer,elevator,canopy,landing
    gear (I chose fixed), motor (OS .45 ABC),radio, control rods.

    I tried to do it their way as much as possible. I ended up changing
    a few things:

    - I attached the two sides of the elevator together with wire. Each
    side had its own control horn but there was too much play.

    - The throttle and the nose wheel control rods that came with the
    kit were not adjustable. I changed that.

    - I gave all the control surfaces more throw than the recommended
    by the instruction booklet.

    - There are a couple of finishing details that I didn't like the
    way they turned out, both related to the wing. So I will change
    those.

    Finally took it to the field. Brand new engine, out of the box.
    I got it going right away and didn't even try to run it rich at
    all.
    It may be because I am used to the trainers. But this thing flies
    great! It is highly manouverable and yet is precise and stays where
    I put it. Maybe I will change my mind when I have to repair it.
    But for now I love it!

    GREAT!! FERN,

    	I had a Telsatr 25 and it also flew great. I've seen a few
    guys in sportsman pattern flying these with 60's and they're
    doing good.   Good luck

252.8Telstar 25 (Experience)SALEM::SEGUINOTThu Oct 04 1990 18:2940
    Have anyone built hobbico telstar 25. I just move in to the Derry
    N.H. area so i decided to buy one from Tower Hobbies.

    Upon opening the box you can be very impressed with kit. But
    When you start looking at detail, back to reality. My kit looked
    like second quality.

    Wing area;

     Epoxy got in to the hinges when the built it at factory, they were
    not silk smooth.
     Win joining looks strong but a more accurate dihedral brace would
    be better. It is better to sand off excess wood than to add.

    Elevator & rudder

     Elevator hinges 2 of them epoxied the other not. I removed and
    installed Dubro hinges. Rudder and fin must be joined by builder.

     Fuselage

     Cowl composed of three pieces very thin plastic. Epoxy was added to
    front plywood but not uniform. I painted with more epoxy to cover
    void areas.
     Canopy area not correctly matched to fuselage, yo can see the inners,
    after you place cannopy nothing can be noticed.

     Instruction were good but they have a problem when calling screw they
    mention 2mm in the partlist and in the assembly drawing the call for
    a 3mm.

     Well for 159.00 you cannot ask for more but i prefer a EZ it has
    more quality built. May be my Kit was a reject.
