Yea, but the prospect of a 3400 lb car flying through the air and into
    the crowd sucks worse.

If the racing was like it was yesterday in the Busch Clash, there will
be no one in the stands to get hurt ! Boring.....

They better do something about this race in the future years. My
suggestion would be go to another track or a different plate allowing
more petal response. Also no more reversing the field BS. The ARCA boys
    were great..

I agree with .25 - the cars are so even and underpowered that I suspect
any of us would do about as well. Irvan tried his damndest to make a move
and went nowhere. Driver skill played no part in the result ... luck, the
whims of others in the race, and pit crew performance determined the
outcome. NASCAR has to find a way to put driver performance back into the
equation or people like me will stop watching. We stop watching, the
sponsors stop writing checks, next thing you know ten pin bowling
(pit-tui) will be filling the TV time slots. At least there, competitor
    skill plays an important role.

Winston Cup racing with plates has about as much appeal as watching grass
grow. The IMSA 24hr was much more interesting!

    Regards,
    Keith

re: .24

Yes, the crowd/spectator safety is important but if that is the
actual problem then fix it. I don't feel restrictor plates is the
solution.

Subj:	BOGUS racing!

When is NASCAR gonna learn that you gotta give those boys some passing power?
Hell, the way it is now, anybody with a decent car and some luck or strategy
could win the 500. It's losing some of it's importance, I think.
Even ole Darrell could win it, if it comes down to gas mileage...like he won
it in '89'. Man he was half a lap behind the leadersbut sucked it up with
fuel mileage. That will be an exciting race for him to tell his
grandchildren about.

Even the ARCA race was semi-boring...except for that rookie who came up on
the rest of the field trying to catch back up under caution and wrecked his
car trying to keep from running the pack over! :*) What a bunch of bonerheads!

Rusty looks like he has a pretty good car, but he has to survive the 125
without wrecking or blowing up. Then he has to survive the 500. That's a
pretty tall order for someone with his luck at Daytona!

Guess I messed up the pole speed...I was close but went over.

I figure they should try what NHRA did to slow the top-fuelers down -
mandate the rear end gear ratio you can use. Then he who can spin the
    motor faster will win.

With the roof flaps the cars pretty much land on their feet and stay
there, I say give back the horsepower.

That won't work. NHRA pissed their pants when the fuelers started
tickling 300mph so they limited the gear. That was then... now
the fuelers are going 320mph and nobodys worried about it anymore.

The gear at Daytona is about 2.90 to 3.00. Playing with the gear will
help with acceleration and passing - maybe. Maybe you'll get passed
down the backstretch as everyone whistles by you because you can
only use 7/8ths of your pedal. use the last 1/8 of the pedal and
you blow up. If too many cars blow up because they over rev, everyone
would be bent out of shape because nobody would finish.

The way to limit the speed at super-superspeedways is to make the
cubic inch limit smaller. Good heads, cam, manifolds bolted onto
a 305 max block as opposed to a 358. This means you can tweak the
heads, finagle the intake and build a bunch more power than the
the other guy with a given limit. Therefore your driver has the
ability to dominate the field or at least pass at will or set up
    the slingshot.

    re .31

I thought that NHRA was keeping speeds below 300 because of insurance.
Their insurance compnay wouldn't cover them if the cars were going over
    300. They found a new insurance company that didn't give them such a
restriction and so they let them go faster.

27 years ago NASCAR stockers were going 200mph.
27 years ago there was a 305 CI engine running at Daytona.
Today showroom stock Saabs are going 165mph.
Today the stock cars are going 188mph.

Whats wrong with this picture.

I used to be interested mostly in the superspeedways but lets face it the racing
is boring but the wrecks are spectacular. Yesterday I got my ticket confirmation
for the Sept NHIS race. I would not trade those tickets for any superspeedway
race including Daytona!

re: Insurance. I keep hearing people bring this up as an excuse but it doesnt
make sense. Details about the costs are always missing. If no insurance company
can be found to cover the racers, then look at another solution. Quick thought
take 10% of the prize money and put it in an insurance fund and self insure.
