53.0. "Mass Doe Permit numbers drawn last Friday." by PARSEC::DAVIS () Mon Oct 12 1987 11:12

Greetings everyone! The drawing for doe permits for the Massachusetts
deer season was held on Friday October 9 in the Grange Room of the
Lenox Town Hall. This was the first time in the 20-year history
of the system, designed to keep the Mass deer herd in balance by
limiting the kill of does, that the lottery was held in Berkshire
    County.

Dick Cronin, director of the Mass Division of Fisheries and Wildlife
presided with Steve Williams (game biologist/deer project leader)
assisting. I've spoken to Steve several times in the past and he's an
excellent person (very cooperative) to talk to. Steve spoke briefly
about the herd, stressing its healthy condition and its value to the
    Mass economy.

Studies indicate, he said, that the average deer hunter spends $500
a year relative to hunting related activities, equipment, lodging,
etc. That makes the total spending by deer hunters to about $35
million! It would be nice if people would think of that the next
    time they knock hunters.

"Economists tell us that the money turns over seven times, so that
means a cash flow of $245 million a year," Williams added.

Well, lets get down to the business for which this note is intended.
The drawing process involved selecting winning numbers at random
for each of the zones. This was done by spinning number-marked
blocks in a barrel and having a member of the audience pull out
    the block.

If the number matched the last digit of the number on an applicant's
hunting liscense, the applicant was a winner, in most instances.
The only exception (indicated by parentheses around the number in
the following listing) was where there were more "winners" than
quota allowed. Only a percentage of randomly selected applicants
in this group will get permits.

The greatest interest was shown in the drawing for Zones 1 to 4
(Berkshire County). The numbers drawn were:

    Zone 1: 6, 8, 4,(9)
    Zone 2: 8, (3)
    Zone 3: 2, 6, 7, 9, (1)
    Zone 4: 3, (9)

More than half the crowd left after these numbers were drawn. The
    other zone numbers drawn were:

    Zone 5: 0, (9)
    Zone 6: 5, 7, 6, (3)
    Zone 7: 2, 1, (8)
    Zone 8: 1, (9)
    Zone 9: 1, (4)
    Zone 10: 1, 4, 7, 9, 5, 0, 2, (6)
    Zone 11: 1, 0, (9)
    Zone 12: 9, 1, 0, 6, 3, (4)

In Zones 13 and 14, all applicants were winners.

Williams said winning applicants will be notified by mail within
a week or 10 days of what procedure they must follow to get their
    permits.

To everyone who drew a permit, I say, "Good luck to you!". For
those who didn't (myself included), I say, "Look for 3 inches or
    better!".

    			Happy and safe hunting,
    			     Tom Davis

    Eagle, Friday October 9, 1987.

53.1WHERE'S the HERD ?NUGGET::BICKESFri Oct 16 1987 09:127
Mr. davis, Did Mr. Cronin say where the deer herd is the biggest
and where would be the second biggest herd. I read where the biggest
kill was last year so I am staying away from there, but I figure
one more in would increase my changes. I got a 7 pointer that dress
out at 180 lbs but that was 3 years ago & they say that some hunters
go another 4 to 6 years before getting another. I can use all the
info I can get, Thanks 9Xx

What a coincidence. Mine is in zone 6 as well. Looks like there's
gonna be a few less does there next year.

Got one three years ago. shot a spikehorn opening day. Missed a
six-pointer the second week. Didn't see a doe 'til the following
June. My partners and I have *not* filled four permits in the
past 5 years. Kiss_of_death if you ask me. Dana_who_likes_tender_
