267.0. " How about DEC Field Day" by MPGS::GRANT (where was Mikie) Wed Nov 02 1988 14:52

Well I've been listening to all you fine folk (and doing
a little bit of talking) for quite some time now and it
never occured to me until I read note #266, but I guess
we don't have anything like a DEC Rod and Gun Club. I
mean there are Softball teams, Baseball and Hockey clubs
    	Ski teams and clubs etc.....

I know the "insurance" problems, but how about a
Digital Field Day. Do some Trap and Skeet, Pistol,
    	rifle, Bow etc...

Just wondering whether or not anything like this has been
    	done.

In any event, mabye this will "spark" some discussion
    	that will lead to something.

I don't think insurance would be an issue if everybody was an
NRA member (which they should be anyway) since you carry up
to 1 megabuck at sanctioned events and traveling to/from hunting.
What would be a major problem for non-Mass people would be the
transport of firearms thru the state. Not too many would be willing
to risk a year in jail or going thru all the hassle to do it right
if it even could be done.

HOWEVER....see my reply in 266.24...we could put together a week
long hunt that would be truly a field day, camping etc. Fees for
3 day small game tag is $21 this year/ $80 for a full non res tag
    and $11 for deer.

    My "permanent" schedule is:

    1st week in May....spring gobbler
1st/2nd week in Oct...mixed bag, bow
    1st week Nov....M/L buck only

I would be willing to coordinate this effort if there is interest,
in fact I would be able to get the tags, lic etc.

The area is a Natl Forest, totally primative camping, tents, trucks
etc and there is a state park nearby with a lodge.

Come on out and meet us ridge runners!!!

267.2DEC Archery ClubPCCAD1::RICHARDJBluegrass,Music Aged to PerfectionWed Nov 02 1988 15:5011
I remember forming an DEC archery club in Westminster back 15 yrs ago.
We had the use of the Gardner Rod & Gun Club, providing we becmae
members there. It never worked out because of the work to set up an
archery range. DEC will contribute money, but there are guid lines
you must follow, which I don't recall.

Some sort of field day would be good. In fact in the fishing conference
they have organized an ice fishing tornament for Jan 7, down in Westboro.
    I'll be going.

Well in the past we have set up some activities.

We have had ( between here and the firearms notes file )

Many attemps at setting up skeet and or trap by Brett Helsel
and myself that didn't go over well.

Then someone else tried another event that also never
    materialized.

Later we tried Sporting clays at Skat. The first year
there were four of us and we had a good time but the next year
there were almost 20 of us that went out just after a spring snow
storm and we had a really good time.

We will porbably do that again because it seems to growing
and it does not give anyone ( trap or skeet ) a distinct ( sp )
    advantage.

Also we had a beginners class set up for people who never shot
skeet before. It was about 5 or 6 hours at the north Leominster
    gun club.

There were 3 women and one man and every one did quite well inspite
     of the weather.

Also we had our first ever game supper. This was held at Luninburg
gun club and again was a little small but quite successful
none the less. I expect we will be having another Game supper
in late winter early spring time frame. Why we even had
one happy noter come in 100 miles from Westfield Mass.

So as you can see have had some get togeathers. I am sorry
if we missed you and we hope and we encourage anykind of get togeather
    because the friendship is great.

So all ideas are great and I hope we get some particpation.

Other things we could do is book a phesant hunt at addiville
or purhaps even a contimental shoot. I know this is not really hunting
but if you keep it in its propper perspective it still a good time.

Most of my vacation is either used up or scheduled to be used
But I would be receptive for another time.

267.4archery league anyoneTWOBOS::LAFOSSEWed Nov 02 1988 18:157
an archery league would be excellent.... theres a store/range right
down the road from littleton (teepee archery) the guy has an indoor
range... and i'm sure we could work something out with him for
scheduling it. could prove to be a good time, and is pretty central
    to the maynard/boxboro/littleton area....

    just a thought... Fra
267.5Some help maybeVICKI::DODIERFri Nov 04 1988 10:5625
Just a suggestion but I think that because people tend to be
spread out, you would almost have to look at 2 or more leagues (i.e.
N.H. and Mass.). If this were the case, then you could have occasional
get togethers and alternate the travel (i.e. N.H. goes down to Mass.
one month and Mass. comes up to N.H. the next).

I have a league that I set up at the Country Pond Fish and Game
Club in Newton, N.H.. I entered the method we used to set-up the
league in the archery notes. If you have any questions or just want
to pick my brains I'll be happy to help out. I did have some minor
obstacles to overcome like how to keep score, handicap calculations,
what targets to use, etc.. I will warn you now that the #1 priority I
had in setting up the league was to have FUN !!!

    	RAYJ

BTW - The league that I set up is going to re-start in Jan. with
the first meeting being Jan. 10. It has been open to non-members
but this will be based on how many members wish to join as the indoor
range is limited in size. For obvious reasons members have priority
but if anyone is interested drop me a line and I'll check out the
amount of people wanting to join this year and whether there will
be any openings. Once your in though, your in (i.e. you won't be asked
to leave if a bunch of members decide they want to join after the
    league starts).
