I took my 7 year old son fishing on Good Friday and really had a great
time. He cracks me up when he tries to add input on hunting/fishing.
We were driving over to one of the farm ponds and spied 2 gobblers in
full strut with 6 or 7 hens, out in a field about 100 yards from the
roadway. I pointed to the turkeys and my son said, "I bet you could
get along the edge of the field with a box call and work em'." I
    almost busted with pride.

When we arrived at the pond the bluegill were going wild and we caught
quite-a-few pretty quick. He came over to me with a 1/4oz spinnerbait
and asked if he could fish for bass. I tied it on for him and he went
around the pond and caught a 14" largemouth. He was so excited...I was
sure glad I asked him to go.

Wess, sounds like you and he had a great time. My son turns 5 on
wednesday. Saturday we were at Wal-mart in the sporting goods
section and he turned to me and said, "Dad, my fishing pole is kinda
old, I think you had better buy me a new one for my birthday". He
was serious about it and the look on his face was priceless.

    Walt,

You are right. Kids sure add a great deal of joy to our lives.

My youngest son is 4 also. He isn't in to hunting/fishing as much as
my older son was at his age. I think it is directly proportionate to
the amount of time I spent with my older son. Since he was first, I
spent more time with just him, putting more focus on helping him, etc..
I am going to try and counter this by taking just my 4 year old on some
"Just him and I" outings. My 7 year old didn't like my future plans, but
when I explained them to him, he smiled and said it was Ok... as long as
it wasn't all of the time!

Good luck on the fishing rod purchase.

Cut it out, you guys. I'm feeling like I should have started a family
too, now. <8-) I wish I'd had the opportunity to learn the outdoor
sports from someone as dedicated as you guys. Being the last of four,
I kind of had to learn most things on my own. Good stories, guys.....
    keep 'em comin'!
