1505.0. "Colorado 1996" by CSC32::J_HENSON (Don't get even, get ahead!) Tue Mar 05 1996 12:20

Time to start a new.

The 1996 Colorado Big Game Regulations (Deer, Elk, Antelope and Black Bear)
are now available. I picked up some copies at a local WalMart.

If you wish to apply for a limited license, application deadline is
April 2.

The moose population has grown in Colorado to the point that about 100
licenses are issued each year. $200 resident and $1000 non-resident.
Well I've juggled the family budget enough that I can at least apply
for the lottery this year. Does anyone have any information/knowledge/
rumors on what would be the best area to go for? Both in number
of available licenses and population? Just about anything would be
more than I have now. Otherwise I will have to "shoot from the hip"
    so to speak.

fred();,

Apply anywhere you like, cause you won't draw out anyway. I think
that you need 5 preference points just to be in contention. I believe
that the way it works is as follows. This is also true for other
hard to get tags such as bighorn sheep.

 - apply every year for 5 years to get your 5 preference points. This
puts you in the 'eligible' category. Without 5 points, you are
   guaranteed NOT to be drawn.

 - apply every year after that. After you have accumulated your 5
preference points, you have the same standing in the draw as anyone
else who has 5 preference points, regardless of the number of years
   you have applied.

 - if you get lucky and draw a tag, you're done. You cannot apply
again, for any reason, even if you were not successful in your
   hunt.

You might want to send mail to Gordon Roberts (see his goodbye note. He
left his email address). He has been applying for quite a while now,
and can probably give you more details than I. Also, I think that the
area around Walden is supposed to be good.

According to the brochure I got from DOW the only limit is
to "harvest" 1 "antlered" moose per lifetime, but if what you say
about the 5 preference points is true, then it would take you at
least 5 more years to get the next license. There are a few
"antlerless" licenses given out, but those are few and far between,
so the 1 per lifetime may be ture in fact if not in policy.

    Thanks anyhow.

AAARRRGGGHHH! Everyones getting there tags but me. I knew I wasn't
going to get my elk tag. I was going for a preference point, so I can
get a cow tag next year to hunt in Buffalo Peaks (unit 49) next year.
I was disappointed when I didn't get my Buck tag to hunt late seaon
(unit 142). I now have 5 preference points for deer. I haven't heard
about my Antelope tag yet. Good luck to all.
