1039.0. "Bowhunters, ready?" by CSOA1::VANDENBARK () Fri Sep 20 1991 18:04

I just wanted to see if everyone else "has it", as bad as I do.
Bowseason is 11 days off (Kentucky), and I can't stand it. I see a
rack on everything that I look at. I even tried to field-dress my dog
yesterday, thank goodness my wife stopped me. How about it?

    Slobbering in anticipation

    Wess,

I got it worse than you do! THANK GOD THAT IN 16 HOURS I WILL BE
ON MY TREE STAND!!! Yes, that's right, in Georgia september 21 is
opening day. I am going crazy. Couldn't do a thing today. Looking
forward to full draw on a deer tommorrow. I will put an opening day
note in notes on Monday or Tuesday. Good luck to everyone, and Wess,
believe me, that is going to be 11 LONG days bud!

Sorry fello stick throwers, but eat your heart out because we've
already been hunting in Colorado :-) The season started in August.
What a hunt is was too. We saw bear, bull elk, bucks and lots of does.
We hunt mulies you hunt whitetails but it don't matter much. Because
there is not anything that quite matches the thrill of comming to full
draw on an animal that doesn't know you're there. Releasing on an
animal is even more intense - who knows, maybe some day I'll bag a
    'mulie'.

and true. Good luck everyone! We're pumped

    	and I'm involved carving ducks/birds.

    Fra
1039.14Yup, what he saidSKIVT::WENERThu Sep 26 1991 09:4617

Yeah Fra, anyone who loves hunting and the outdoors will find
bowhunting one of the most incredible experiences they've ever had.
I know guys that have gotton deer with their rifles and have yet
to get one with their bow - and they still claim they prefer
bowhunting. A few of the major reasons I enjoy it so much is that
its generally quiter in the woods with fewer people, the deer aren't
spooked out of their normal habits, you have to hunt them one-on-one
(there are usually no freebies), and it's a major challenge.

I can't count how many times I've been sitting in a stand and
watched squirrels, chipmunks, and partridges come within just a few
feet of me. The closest deer I've had to me while bowhunting was
probably no further than 10 feet away! Now that's excitement!!
If you can keep your blood from boiling over at a time like that,
you've got nerves of steel! - me, My legs were shaking so bad I
was bobbing up and down a foot or more :')
1039.15SATURDAY NIGHT "BUCK" FEVERMEMORY::GAZZANIGAMon Sep 30 1991 09:5110

Tell ya Fra, just the thought of getting out there with the bow has
the adrenalin up.....I have had deer come within 10 to 20 feet and
last year missed the BIG one because my %^#$%#%%^ ka nock came off
of the arrow when I drew on it.... QUIET...no doubt about it...you
can hear that crunching at 100 yards....or so it seems...can't get
    here fast enough.

from where I've been bowhunting for the last several years!! Kinda
puts a pin in the balloon if you know what I mean :'(

I'm getting real tired of hearing about this kind of crap, the only
saving grace is that they were apparantly caught.

Well boys, i'm really in a bind and i'm hoping someone in here can
help me out... yesterday morning Ibroke my thumb and really messed up
the tendons while playing hockey. ;^( i'm now saddled with a cast and
no way to draw a bow... even with a release it's no go!

i'm going to call the VT fish ang game and see whats necessary to hunt
with a crossbow... hopefully the fact that i might have to have
surgery on it will have some bearing. i'll know later today after
    seeing the Orthopedic Surgeon.

Now my question... anybody have a crossbow or know someone who does
that would let me borrow it for a few weeks... i'm scrambling... and
don't have the necesary $$$ to go out and buy one for what will be
    essentially 2 weeks use...

1039.19Maybe your doctor hunts too.HYEND::POPIENIUCKMon Sep 30 1991 13:0316
    Fra,

Check with your doctor about the cast and thumb. Two years ago my
brother fractured his leg two weeks before the rifle season in Maine.
With the help of the doc, he was able to put on a flexible, waterproof
cast. We fitted fis foot with an outer snowmobile boot and some wool
padding and it worked out fine; although dear brother didn't
particularly like the day I decided to climb the mountain. Hell, just
have the doc set your fingers into a permanent position so you can draw
    the bow.

I've since forbidden my brother the riding of motorcycles within 2
    months of deer season.

Fra, Vermont F&W office in Waterbury is 244-7331.
I think all they need is a signed statement from your doctor.
I only know of one person who has hunted/hunts with a crossbow -
someone who has M.S. and has to literally "drag" himself into the
woods every deer season. He's using his, so I can't help you there.
BTW, If this person can still get out and do it, I'm sure you'll
be able to find a way. This guy regularly gets deer with both bow
and rifle!!! A true inspiration to all dedicated sportsmen.

1039.21Have you tried a Trophy Hunter?DNEAST::BAKER_CHUCKHuman Input Required...Mon Sep 30 1991 14:0711

Don't know your exact situation but a "Trophy Hunter" release has a
strap that goes around your wrist and you can draw your bow without
even holding onto the release. Very easy to draw even a heavy weight
    bow with this thing.

havn't tried yet, as the thumb is still dislocated.... hopefully after
this mornings surgery and a new cast i should be able to give it a try.

had an appt with the surgeon yesterday, he tried relocating it, but
there is a piece of cartilege that is broken and the thumb l=keeps
slipping back out, sooooo, he's gonna install a couple of pins to keep
it in till the cartilege heals...

if i can use a release with the new cast, i will give it a try...
still trying to work the crossbow deal as a last resort. called F&W

Good Luck! Were you able to locate a crossbow and accessories??
I had a theory, Fra, that you did this on purpose because you haven't
been able to get quite close enough to the deers in the last few years
....so you'd bust yourself up so you could get a crossbow... and then
you'd be able to shoot from 60 yards out.... :')

Real sorry for your misfortune at this time of year.

One idea might be to get a pinch shooter.
I broke me arm four years ago and had the doctor leave my
thumb and the tips of my fingers out so that I could ride a
snowmobile. I had him put on a fiberglass cast; so that
if it got wet it would not fall apart.

Good luck and I will keep my eyes open for a crossbow.

I am going to Maine this weekend. The acorns and beechnuts on

Well, having just gone through this myself, let me tell you what
    to do...

In Vermont, call Maureen Allen in Waterbury Vt, Dept Fish and Wildlife.
don't have her number on hand, but Rob Wener posted it in an earlier
reply. In Vermont it is legel to hunt with a release aid. and based
on your injury a permit can be applied for, to hunt with a crossbow.
However, Maureen has to mail it to you, and your doctor has to fill it
out and you then have to interview with her and have the permit on
hand. But seeing as the season has already started you better hurry.

I called Mass also, and they don't want to hear the word "crossbow"...
so it looks like i'll be outa luck this year. ;^( I called Westboro
headquarters, and was told that i could get a permit for a release aid,
but that was about the best i could do, crossbow permits were very
    rare.

    FYI,

    Fra

don't have any info on NH...

Did you get a Vt. Crossbow permit for the season? If so, were you
able to get out ? I couldn't tell from your note whether you were able
    to for Vt or not.
I didn't see a deer all weekend.... but that doesn't bother me,
    weather was pretty lousy.

    Rob,

got the application in the mail thursday, drove to waterbury friday,
got there at 2:30, and met with Maureen Allen, Nice lady!! she had my
permit all ready to go, was in and out in 10 minutes... stayed and
talked to her and 2 wardens for about 1/2 hour... nice people

jumped a nice spike saturday morning, ran across a pasture, stopped
about 70 yards out, turned around and started walking back toward me...
too far out for a shot... musta thought I was a bull that had come too
close for comfort. There were 6-8 bulls out browsing in the pasture
with the buck, he was under an apple tree eating. stayed outa range
for close to 10 minutes, then the wind changed directions and he winded
me snorted and took off in the direction of another guy in the club...
barked twice to alert him something was coming... he got a shot off but
    missed high.

bulls chased me out the pasture... man, was i nervous.... never realized
they were there till i was halfway out into the pasture. they chased
me all morning... from one area to the next... finally after one close
call too many I said to hell with it... turns out they were neutered
and arn't really anything to worry about.... ya right...

saturday evening i stalked within 50 yards of a nice 4 pointer browsing
in a field, crawled on my belly for 75-80 yards, closes i could get to
it was about 50 yards... never came any closer.... was runningouta
daylight so i took a pop, no dice shot low...

I'll tell ya, do'nt believe everything you hear about crossbows....
about the only advantage is that you don't have to draw it when the
deer come in, otherwise their no faster or flatter than a conventional
bow, and you'll never get off a second shot. unless your completely
hidden in a blind... the cocking lever is really cumbersome to use with
one hand disabled... Unless i'm using an older model and they've come
a long ways since... i was wishing i had my golden eagle.

it was nadsy though getting so close by stalking... what a thrill.
    got drenched for my efforts.

    sunday was a wash! literally!

    how'd everyone else do?

    Fra

PS, one of the guys in our group (6 of us) shot a 100 lb doe saturday
night, one shot through the throat, severed arterie (jugular?) and

    Fra,

Nice to hear that you were able to get the permit. Now you got me
wondering about playing hockey...hmmm...seems I have a game tonight.

Anyway I got out Sat. am only, saw 2 deer, one was about 6' from
me, holding my bow up I couldn't see my pins, too dark. Oh well it
    was exciting anyway.

    Good luck,

Yeah Fra, that's great news! You'd be sick if you had to be an
"armchair bowhunter" for a year. Hopefully Stevevan won't have to!
at least you got a decent shot off Fra, I had a 4 point buck make a
shambles of me last night - left me hanging in my own tree wondering
"where did he go, where did he go" as the old cartoon saying goes...
and I never got a shot off although he was within 22 yds of me twice
    - in a shooting lane. He was just doing what they do best - being
sneaky! Oh well... win some, lose some, it was still a blast!

Fra, I called the westboro office and they told my to call the Boston
office and talk to a Jack Buckley. Jack told me that he will send
me the application for mechanical releases, it should be at the house
by the end of the week < I HOPE >. Then a note from my doctor and
I'll be all set for all 3 states.....

I went out last nite and tried 4 kinds of releases, WOW what a
difference a release makes...took me about 10/12 shots to get the

Re:48

Here in godd ol Massachusettes the legal distance for bow hunters is the same
as for ammo shooters. ie: 150ft from road and 500 ft from inhabited dwelling.
Gee, I hope noone has to come back and tell me I have them reveresed as I just
lasst week sat through a bow hunter safety course with my 15 yr old ans the
distances were mentioned. I should ask him since he scored 100% (a liitle
bragging here please excuse)

Safe hunting to all,

Just got back from yet another adventure... ;^)

what a weekend... Had that 4 pointer come in to within 15 yards of a
makeshift groundblind in the middle of the meadow where I stalked up
to him the previous weekend... never had the opportunity to draw on
it, he came in straight away, watched him for 10 minutes (seemed like
an hour) but he never offered a broadside shot, and never allowed me an
opportunity to shoot... at 15 yards, he saw something he didn't like
and started to stomp his front feet.... that was all she wrote, took
off like a rocket. It was an interesting display... and guess what
Rob/Kevin... he had a pretty impressive looking rack!! did i just say
that? ;^) oh, BTW i'm back to using my bow... its a bitch to anchor
but it beats the hell outa that crossbow... however, i was wishing i
had it friday afternoon, but even then, a front chest shot isn't the
best offering for a clean kill... Saturday noontime, of of the guys
helped me put in my Hang-On Lite on the edge where the 4 pointer's been
coming in from. Toobad I hadn't had help a day earlier.
    Oh well... always next weekend

Saturday night, had does come in outa range, and all the grunting and
bleating wouldn't get em any closer. Sunday night, had 10
deer come into the upper field, serious need for another stand to make
use of the different wind directions. Wind going left to right they come
into the field from my side (loggy on edge of field) wind going from
right to left and they came into the other edge... Live and learn.

You'd think by now you'd have them figured out... ;^) naw, the next
night they walk right up the middle!!! where one of the guys has a
ladder stand, he misses at 18 yards, tough shot between 2 trees.

Tough being in 3 places at one time. ;^)

Anyways, still a ball, looking forward to Thursday afternoon, where
i'll be back in my treestand waiting for another chance.

Rob, again congrats, you beat me to 270, I owe ya a beer! Genny's? ;^)

Just received my permit to use a mechanical release for bow hunting...

I picked up a release about a week ago and have been at the range
almost every nite.... Not a bad group of arrows. 5 - 6 in the bull
    at 20 yrds, 30yrds and 4 - 6 at 40 yrds....

    Nice smoooooooth release...

Must say it took me 2 days to get use to the release, a few times I
would set the release and start to draw then hit the trigger and my
arrow would fall 2 feet in front of my... Boy was my face RED cause
there were 5 guys standing there when this happened.

deer, unfortunately when i'm on stand and waiting to make the drop on
them, nothings coming close enough for a shot.. otherwise, i'm

better, one 8 pointer)... of the remaining 14, 9 were known does,

Well, after a full week in Vermont, I'm disappointed. Weather was
too warm, IMO, lows in the 50's and highs in the 70's. Deer had
food everywhere and were not concentrating on anything. No buck
rubbing or scraping whatsodamnedever. Saw two does Tuesday morning,
they bolted into a swamp. That afternoon they cam back out, but
caught me waiting for them. i don't think the full moon helped
    either.

Then today, the day after season, the weather turns brisk.

It was a crappy week to hunt deer, a crappy week to hunt anything
for that matter. I reverted to do some grouse hunting, saw a small
buck...reverted to bow hunting saw grouse running everywhere...it
never ceases to amaze me how these animals seem to have that 6th sense,
the sense to determine whether or not you are a danger to them. I
don't think they know by the weapons or lack of that we carry, more,
I would guess, by our body language, how we walk...what we're looking
at etc. They are truely amazing, if the anit's only knew the
dimensions of the wild animals...maybe they'd cut us some slack.

Better luck with the rifle Dana...
