967.0. "Camping/Hunting the same area" by SKETCH::PETERSON (I know.., I said I was leaving. BUT...!) Thu May 30 1991 19:46

This may be in another note somewhere, but I sure couldn't find
    it..

This fall I plan on taking a couple of days here and there to
do some hunting in the Central, or mabey Western part of MAss.
What I would like to know from any of you more experienced people
is if there are areas(no, don't give away a secret place) where
camping and hunting lands "mingle" with each other? So far I have
just driven out to Barre with a friend, but this year I would like
to spend 2 or 3 days out, camp, hunt, cook, ect..

    	Any Suggestions?

    	Thanks,

    	Chuck Peterson

I don't know if you are looking to stay in an "official" campground,
but one thing to make sure of (if you are). Most, if not all,
campgrounds I have camped at, do not allow firearms.

If you're willing to travel a bit further, there's a State
Forest with a camping area on Rte. 20 between Huntington and
Chester, about 30 minutes west of Westfield. Extensive hunting
in the Chester-Blandford State Forest. Also good hunting in
the surrounding area. However, to hunt the Blandford side
you need written landowner permission on private land.

Check with Beartown State Forest that's between Rt.23 in Montery
and I think Rt. 20 near Lee.I hunted there during Deer and Turkey
seasons a few years ago and saw a lot of hunters camped out in there.
It's a big chunk of state land surrounded by communities that don't
allow hunting without a landowners permission.I think I remember
seeing stuff in local news and outdoor columns that the state had
cracked down on camping on state land and had restricted it to a
    very few places.

Thanks for all the info. It looks like IF I persue this, that I'd
better go to some of these places and start talking to land owners.

I hope the Landcruiser makes it! :-)
