884.0. "Memories of the Season" by ODIXIE::RHARRIS () Fri Jan 04 1991 19:52

288 more days until opening day.

NO!!!!!!!! I can't wait THAT long. Hey, where can one travel in this
great land of ours for some deer hunting in spring? Is there such a
    paradise?

Well, this season brings back such fond memories. Like the
anticipation of opening day, the adrenelin flowing through my system at
the sight of the first deer, seeing the deer while they have no idea of
my existence. A beautiful sunrise piercing through the tops of the
southern pine, while shivering in my tree stand waiting for the light
to hit me and warm me with its rays. The bonding of the hunters who
are also close friends. A crackling campfire, the smell of venison
cooking with home fries. Sleeping outdoors. The stars. Hearing a
sound in the woods, and picking out a squirrel 200 yards away in the
hardwoods. Deer snorting. Using my gutting knife for exactly that.
Unloading one less cartridge from my rifle at the end of the day. The
drag. Yes, even those @#$% yellowjackets. Ahhh! There is SO much
more to it than harvesting a deer. Thank you God for the privilage of
the hunt. Until next season come upon us, it is time to remember the
times we have shared, and to look forward of the times to come. Happy
new year everyone, and like I stated earlier, 288 more days!

    A very content hunter,

    Bob

There's trout fishing and turkey hunting in the spring - both of
which can be combined with trips to camp to clean, scout, set
up new stands, etc. Then there's gun shows where you can look
at new deer guns, reloading to develop better deer loads, catalog
shopping for new hunting gear, conditioning for the hunt, books
and magazines to read, hunt strategies to plot, bow and gun practice,
videotapes to watch and calls to practice. Matter of fact, I wonder
if I'll be able to get all that done by October !!
