821.0. "when deer become a nuisance..." by BRABAM::PHILPOTT (Col I F 'Tsingtao Dhum' Philpott) Wed Oct 24 1990 14:37

So what would you do: something was eating the rose bushes in our
    back garden.

My wife likes those roses, and she doesn't like them being eaten.

Anyway the culprit was identified: a roebuck.

    I checked the legality ...

    and ...

Last Sunday I saw the critter coming for breakfast... two rounds of
9.3 x 74R later (OK - so its overkill) and it was an ex-roebuck.

    /. Ian .\

(Now the only problem is the squirrels eating the birds nuts - time to
change barrels on the Valmet, methinks...)

Hmmm ! I was just reading this months edition of Country Journal. There
is a tape that you can put on plants to keep the deer away. I'm not
certain how it works, but maybe somebody else would know.

Ian,

Do they let you eat the "ex-roebuck" when you kill one because of
predation. Most of the states over here will let a landowner kill
deer and elk when they pose a predation problem, but they won't let
you claim the carcass. I believe that they just make you leave it
where it dropped or they'll come and get it.

Anyone have more accurate information on this?

Jerry

well I can't speak for stateside, but our regs require the carcass to
be inspected by a meat inspector (lowly paid local government civil
servant) after which it can be eaten. (my wife dressed it out and hung
it whilst we waited for the little white van to come and stamp it "fit
    for human consumption")

Ian, I'll bet you planted those roses as Roe-deer
bait :-). Your only problem now: how to get another
deer to come and sample the garden of delight ...
And all this on top of being able to take God only
knows how many Red stags ... tsk, tsk. Some people
really have a hard life. :-)

Ian,

Does your wife have any sisters or female cousins? Does she clean
fish, too? Whatever you do, hang on to that woman! (a smiley face
thing or two should go here)

    Hi Ian,
My wife must be a sister to your wife. She tells me that I dont know
how to butcher a deer. She gets P*SSED when I wont let her help skin
one out. She just starts cutting with the knofe and ruins the hide for
making buckskin leather. So, all I do is skin and she does the rest of
the cutting and preperation of the carcass for the freezer.

Them Thai women have some strange ways at times, dont they. 8<) 8<)..

Yep my wife is a treasure:... and she skins anything I give her (at
least anything she can cook and eat... fin, fur and feather)

Unfortunately the storks get the fish from the local pond, but the
    Thames is near...

re .0 local apple orchard owners often hang soap in mesh cloth bags
from their trees to keep whitetails out - the smellier the better.
