805.0. "Where are they when you need em?" by ODIXIE::RHARRIS () Mon Oct 15 1990 16:20

I got to get into the woods. Well, my neighbor was going squirrel
hunting sunday morning, and asked me to go. Perfect, get the smell of
the woods on my hunting clothes for the following weekend, deer opener.
So, here I am in the woods before sunrise to go squirrel hunting. How
come is it when you go deer hunting, you see squirrel, and when you go
    squirrel hunting, you see deer?

Anyway, so I am on top of the mountain, leaning against a tree looking
for squirrels, and what do I see? a Doe. A big doe, just feeding on
the acorns and greenery. Less than 20 yards from me. I am on the
ground, am so still she doesn't even notice me. She looked right at
me and didn't see me. The only camo I had on was overalls.

So what's the big deal on scents, uv killer for washing clothes, ultra
camo etc? I think it is all hype!!!! I watched this doe for a good
ten minutes feeding, less than 30 yards away from me at all times.
Now my buddy fired off his .22(obviously getting his squirrel) and the
only thing this doe did was flag. She still ate as if nothing
happenned. But what was weird, she caught wind of something, not me,
and took off running. It sure was an educational experience. So five
days away and all I will probably see is squirrel.

By the way, I didn't get any squirrel. But sure had a good time in
the Georgia mountains on a beautiful autumn day, and even saw a deer.

    Good luck all.

805.1Silly, you should have guessed!?!WFOV12::DRUMMMon Oct 15 1990 17:0912
You silly hunter you!!! Don't you know that not only have the deer
gained the ability to see ultraviolet, and smell a human from 35 miles
they also know how to read a calendar. Not only that, every year did
you ever notice how the deer seem to vanish on opening day of the
hunting season? And did you ever notice that when you purchase your
permits they are out of the pamphlets that have the new years
hunting dates? Well the Fish & Game dept sends out the dates to the fish
and game, that's why they have the name Fish & Game Dept. So put 2 and 2
together and now you'll know why you see deer during squirrel season
    and squirrel during deer season!!!

Naaah, Steve, they have super eyesight. She read the engraving on
his gun where it said '22LR' and knew he wasn't deer hunting. Now
if she'd 'a' seen '30-30 Win." she'd have lit out for the next
    county :-)

Maybe she saw my t-shirt that had golf lingo on it and thought my rifle
    was a golf club?

ref .3 & .4 don't laugh about golf clubs while hunting. A number of
years ago I took my family to Fundy National Park in New Brunswick,
upon arriving at the office to pay, I saw a hurse. Appearently this
guy saw a bull moose on the green and decided to hit thru only the
moose had the honors and wasn't letting anyone cut in front of him.
There were 2 stubborn Bull mooses that day, the bigger one Won.
