703.0. "North American Hunting Club" by CHRLIE::HUSTON () Wed Jul 25 1990 13:32

In a note some place in here, the topic of the North American Hunting
Club was brought up and generated some interest.

I have been a member for about 6 months now, someone asked for
    subscription info, here it is:

Since I started this note, I thought I should put something in.

I am no longer a NAHC member. THe magazine was not that good and was
severly slanted toward Western Big Game, very few small game/upland
    bird/duck/goose hunting.

I also didn't like the fact that they constantly try and sell you
something or get you to join some type of club (book club etc).

Also once my membership expired I got alot of mail asking me to
rejoin, this went on for about 3 months after the expiration and
even after a phone call to them the ask them to stop wasting there
money on me. It got so that I dreaded seeing a NAHC envelope in
    the mail.

I recently joined NAHC. Seems like a pretty good deal, to me. Of
course, I am a western hunter, so I like their magazine. So far,
I think that they're ok. However, only time will tell.

The club seems oriented more towards the hunter with money
to travel to other states and use guided hunting services.
Would that my budget allowed ;-(

Still undecided whether I will renew.

I didnt like the idea of getting these books shipped to me then
having a bill of $17.95 in the box, when I didnt even request the book,
and then if thats not good enough they sent me a belt buckle, and
wanted something like $50.00 for it, it was a nice belt buckle but I
wouldnt pay that much for a belt buckle.....

Yea, there was a discussion in the fishing notes file about the
NA"Fishing"C. I joined that because it looked like a good deal. Then
when I got into it it looked just like a big scam and a rip off. After
I was a member of the NAFC for about 3 months, I got mail asking me to
join the NAHC. That's when I realized it had nothing to do with clubs
    but big corporate scamming.

I never rejoined (although I thought the NAFC had a slick logo).

Oh yea. In NAFC they had the deal about "field testing". It said to
write to an address and tell them you wanted to be a field tester.
I sent them 3 letters telling them I wanted to field test equipment.

I'm still waiting 3 years later for the first equipment to arrive for
    test.

I joined the NAHC some years ago and also submitted my name as a field
tester. They sent me some wool socks and liners that worked great and
I still am using them. I sent them my report on the merchandise and
they responded with asking me to continue as a field tester. I haven't
seen anything since. I am getting fed up with the commercialism they
seem to be exploiting. I am always getting something in the mail from
them to buy. The last one was cancer insurance, from a hunting club,
give me a break. They seem to be getting more oriented to the dollar
than to the hunter. I'm getting sick of it.

Isn't there a law on the books which states that if someone sends you
something through the mail, which you didn't request, that you can
keep it and don't have to pay for it? Seems like there even used to
be public service spots on TV with this message.

Does anyone have more reliable information?

I've had similar experiences with NAHC. They would send me cookbooks
that I didn't ask for along with a bill for $17 or so.

As for their publication...I find it geared to western hunting
and very little useful information for someone who hunts the
    northeast.

    I cancelled by subscription quickly!

703.14PLEASE MAKE THEM STOPAIMHI::BROWNTue Jul 23 1991 18:4013
You folks got off cheap... I was a member 2 years ago, and they
claimed I was sent their official "Rhodium and Gold Belt Buckle"
which they wanted over $50.00 for. In one of the NASTY GRAM's I got
they said it was sent via UPS, and they still havn't received the
payment for it yet. Neither my wife or I had signed for anything,
and too this day they are still trying to get the money from me!!

How do you get these people to leave you alone?! I have sent several
letters to them, and it still continues. They have the nerve to try
and get me to renew my membership over and over and over...

Just figured I'd put in my 2 cents worth, because this is a very
    sore subject with me!!

Has anyone tried lodging an official complaint with the local
postmaster. Seems like this ought to at least be worth a shot.

I'll have to say, though, you guys have got me worried. I joined
NAHC about 6 months ago. So far, the only problem I had was when
I recieved a letter asking for me to send in my subscription money,
even though I already had. I just chalked it up to "crossing in
the mail" and forgot about it. They haven't really bothered me since,
other than the insurance thing. But then again, the NRA tries to
sell you insurance, too.

    re .14:

    > How do you get these people to leave you alone?!

I have a method that works great. I cross out my address and write on
the envelope "Deceased. Return to Sender". Then I toss it in a US
mail box (other than my own....don't want to scare my mailman or
interrupt my service!). I've gotten rid of the worst of them! We're
talking Columbia House is one of the notches in my belt (years ago).

As for books, I do a similar thing. I rip off the shipping order (the
envelope on the front) and open the box, put the envelope inside and
write "return to sender" all over the box in big letters. Then I toss
it into the big blue mail box. If the US Postal Service can find your
address, it will come back to you. So be sure you hide the address
where only the original shipper will find it when they get it back.

Please no flames about my abuse of the postal service. Did you hear
the price of stamps is going up again next month? Sure, no doubt
    because of me.

I cancelled my membership from NAHC last year. I also got sick and
tired of receiving books that did not do me any good. It's too bad. I
thought that it might be a good club to join. Like always I find things
out the hard way. Why stop now? The only 2 clubs I have found to be
worth belonging to are the NRA and GONH.

Boy, Here it is December 1, and my subscription expired in June,
    INTENTIONALLY!

These people Suck! They keep sending me books. I have finally gotten
to the point of writing on the damn box, "return to sender, no longer
    at this address".

They keep sending me bogus mail stating that this is my last chance to
renew. When do they get the hint.

I'll tell you what I am going to do, next box I get from them, it's
their loss. I will keep it, and not pay the bill. I will deny ever
receiving the box. Anything that comes via u.s.mail regular delivery,
they cannot prove I received it.

DO NOT JOIN THIS SCHLOCK OUTFIT! They are nothing more than a scam
    club in my opinion.

Also, I get sick and tired of magazine companies asking me to renew
when my subscription is two months into a year.

re .19 I let my subscription run out on American Photo over 2 years
ago and the still send me the damn magazine. They keep asking me to
renew when my subscription runs out but I never reply and still keep
sending it to me. Too bad for them. I will not go to the trouble any
more of trying to tell them NOT to send it to me. I have already told
them a couple of times. Besides it kind of works well in the bottom of
the cat box anyways when I'm done looking at it.

P.S. By the way it took about a year for North American Hunting Club to
realize I didn't want to be a member of their organization.

I was a member of the NAHC for a year. I, too, wasn't particularly
impressed with them. For instance, they make a big deal about members
field testing equipment and such, but they don't tell you how to
sign up as a candidate for field testing. I still don't know how
you do it.

As for the books, they sent me one, also. It was a pretty good book, too.
When they sent the bill, I chucked it. They billed me 2 or 3 more times,
and I ignored it each time. They finally quit pestering me, and I
haven't heard from them in a long time.

Jerry

P.S. By law, if someone sends you something that you didn't request,
you are not legally obligated to pay for it or to return it. In other
words, it's a gift.

I was wondering if anyone had any experience with a magazine/club
called 'North American Hunting Club". I recieved an application for
membership in the mail. It states that you get to try out equipment for
evaluatin and then keep it. It also comes with a magazine, but it does
not say how many issues a yr. It offers discounts on equipment too for
its members. It ounds like a glorified sales pitch to me. Anyone ever
    join it? It cost $12/yr.

    Thanks,

They're still at it. I got an offer to join their little club in the
mail this week. Looks good on he surface. Thank God for notes.
Thanks to the entries here their offer (and a lot of grief I don't
    need) goes into the round-file.

    Rathole alert:
One of the worst bunches I ever had to get to leave me alone, and
one of the worst for junk mail was American Express. You'd'a thought
the American economy was going to collapse because I canceled my card.
