473.0. "NE Mast crop 1989" by SA1794::CHARBONND (It's a hardship post) Thu Sep 21 1989 13:06

What is the mast crop like in New England like this
    year ? Acorns, beechnuts, etc.

I ask because I haven't seen many acorns in my forays
into Western Mass., or Vermont. (Admittedly not enough
    time out there.)

The reports on bear season in Mass. say the crop is
good, but I've seen large tracts of oaks with NO nuts.
    What gives ?

Around my house in Northboro there are ALOT of acorns. Seems
    to definitely above average.

In N.H. it looks like a bumper crop year for nuts. Up north in the
White Mts. for example the bears have been climbing trees for
beechnuts. You wouldn't believe how many beech trees that I have
come across with claw marks in the bark from where they have been
going up and down the trees. My brother for example got a shot at
a bear in a beech tree a couple of weekends ago. Acorns are also
    in abundance too.

Send some nuts out our way! we didn't get the rains needed for a good
crop this year in Arizona. you'll only find them around the rivers.
even the prickly pear crop (another bear favorite) is lighter.
