447.0. "Portable tree stands" by SA1794::CHARBONND (I'm the NRA, GOAL, TBA) Wed Aug 23 1989 17:50

I am opening this note for discussion of portable,
manufactured tree stands. Baker, Loggy Bayou, Loc-On,
    etc...

    Comparisons, complaints, horror stories, recommendations.

If anyone cares to discuss home-built stands (let me tell
you about the sucker I use) please start another note.

I'll start. Last year, my partner bought a Loc-On LEM,
hang-on stand. Nice and light, and sat well once installed.
I have since ordered a similar unit for myself - the Spirit.
The difference is, the Spirit has an aluminum grate floor,
where tha LEM has a carpeted plastic floor. The Spirit weighs
    a couple pounds less.

My only beef with the stand is that the seat is a bit small,
and a bit low. Adding a hot-seat, the cloth covered type,
    greatly increased the comfort level.

Looking forward to giving the stand the acid test this fall.

I think I'm going to purchase a Loggy Bayou this fall. Every
thing I've read on them seems to indicate that they are and excellent
stand. Has anyone outh there actually used one??

I stand 6ft 3in and 275lbs on the hoof. Can anyone recommend a strong
portable tree stand (other than the tree itself) that would fit
    my needs.

          Thanks,

447.4Laggy BayouTWOBOS::LAFOSSEFri Aug 25 1989 21:3910
how bout a loggy bayou.... holds 300+lbs is lightweight (11.5 lbs)
is a climber but can be used as a hang-on also, price is a
consideration, $199, but it is by far the best treestand on the
market as far as safety is concerned.

It will not damage the tree, and is a sturdy little unit.

    check em out!

If you use a Baker tree stand (climber) only use it on rough
bark trees because if used on a smooth barked you may be in for
a biog suprise it really sucks when you get up 20 feet and then
the next thing you are doing is picking yourself up off the ground
    these treestands will slide.
But all in all I love the baker replica that I made the anchor
angle I made is alot sharper than the factory made ones so they
    bite in alot better.
                                                      Lee

    Fra,

I'm debating on purchasing a LOGGY, are you speaking from experience
    by owning one yourself?

In case your interested, Forrest Orchard
Sports rte 20 Northboro is selling them for $179.00. They do look
great compared to anything else I've seen. Yet they do have a price
tag to match. They aren't available though the wholesale warehouses,
dealers only. They do come with a safety strap, and a how to install
    and assemble video.

Where is Lew Hortons, and do you have a number for them? I would
assume that they carry the Hang-On Lite model as well...

    Fra,

Hortons is on Waverley st (Rte 135) in Framingham. I work there
parttime on Tues, Wed, and Thurs nights as well as Sat. Stop by
if you want to take a close look at the stands or just shoot the
breeze. They also got the Hang-Ons for $89.00.

    Barry,

I don't own one, but used another guys last year in Vt for a weekend,
it was excellent. He also had the seat climber attachment, definately
made short order of climbing. Only problem is the price, I've got
the video that comes with it if you'd like to take a look at it...

Jeff, thanks for the info, I plan on coming down this week some
time, hopefully you'll be there. Are they open late weeknights?

Horton's is usually open on Wednesdays. Unfortunately, this
past Wed, the store was closed for the funeral of Bill Federico,
the store manager. Bill was killed in a motorcycle accident last
Saturday. He was 28 years old.

Many of you have heard of Nate Mitchell. Nate is local "guide" and has
a syndicated TV show called "Outdoors in Maine."

Well Nate hunt's a few days out of my friends camp in Athens Maine. He
always brings his latest toys to brag about or show off...Three weeks
ago he showed up with a brand new portale tree stand. This stands
weighs 17 pounds and folds into a backpack by using parts of the
    ladders for a pack frame.

Nate headed out late Friday to set it up. Came back about dark and
predicted he would have all sorts of deer around the stand in the
morning. We proceeded to drink a couple of beers and play some serious
    poker..

Saturday morning, Nate heads out about 5:30 to get to his stand before
sun up. We all head out shortly after that for the mornings hunt. Our
method is in the woods before 6, come back for breakfast at 9:30 and
back out for the day at 10...

About 8:45 Nate is back in camp. No deer. Says he didn't see a thing.
We asked him how the tree stand worked out. His response was , "I don't
know, I can't find the damn thing." It seems he set it up at dusk and
really didn't get his bearings straight. We all head out to the general
vicinity at 10 to look for his stand. We found it. About 30 yards from
where Nate had spent some time standing watching a crossing.

I'm never gonna hire him as a guide, but I do love his show..

Well, I thought it was about time my buddies and I went back into
the woods and take down our stands. We we go to two of friends stands,
all of their strap on and screw in steps were gone (14 in all). My
other buddy has a tree stand ladder that had a lock on it so that was
safe. My stand was off the trail so mine didn't get touched. We were
on my buddies land in Paxton on 200 acres. We had to use the ladder
to get to their stands. All of our stands were chained up so they were
ok. Next year he is posting it!! We never saw anyone ever on the
    property... a**holes!!! can't trust anyone!!!!

447.22what a shame you have to post itKNGBUD::LAFOSSEMon Jan 07 1991 12:2429
    BJ,

sorry to hear bout your stolen stuff... It's a dmn shame when you
can't relie on a mans honesty as a fellow sportsman.

Myself and another guy in this file bowhunted and shotgun hunted in an
area in the leominster/fitchburg area all season... we Both had
portables up (locked) with screw in steps... didn't have a problem
whatsoever... talked with a total stranger during the bowseason, who
saw my stand while looking for a place to put his up... saw another
guys stand while I was locating another area for a second stand...
came across a ladder stand while on a blood trail, and 2 more portables
    with guys in them...

It's a damn shame when you can't trust everyone, but Thats the key word
I believe... "everyone" Theres always a few in every crowd who will
ruin it for the rest of the honest guys...

I had someone use my stand while I had it in VT, he left a can of soda
and a couple of candy bars with a little thank you note in my seat
pack. Thats a classy hunter! I have no problem with a stranger using
my stands, as long as they leave em in better shape than they found
them. Guess i've been fortunate, but I have to believe that hunters are
genuinely honest. Course then again, most of my stands are pretty far
off the beaten path, and pretty well camoed... ;^)

tis a sad day when you can't trust another hunter...

One of the guys I hunted with this year left his Loggy stand out
over the week, and when we came in the following saturday, the cable was
cut and the stand and screw in steps were ripped OFF. This made one VERY
pissed off person, and good thing the person/persons were not around, because
I don't think he would of held back from really hurting whoever stole his
loggy tree stand.

He did learn not to trust anyone anymore, and will put his stand
up every morning, and take it down every night. What a pain !!!!!!!!!!

    Re: .22
Fra, I may be wrong but I think it is illegal to use screw-in steps
here in Ma. I am not saying this as criticism, just if correct you
wouldnt want to be caught in the stand by a warden.

Jack, don't use screw-in's in Ma... use em in VT, actually I only hunt
out of hemlocks, so I don't need the steps anyways.

Just finished reading the mass laws again (for the 101 time) and did'nt
    see anything regarding treesteps...

    thanks for the concern.

I have them in my seat pack which is attached to the stand... never had

afraid of heights and arn't in tree climbing shape.

Well, this note has been dead for quite a while, and I'm starting
to dream about hunting again, so...

Been using the Loc-On Spirit two seasons now, very impressive
once you get it up the tree. I'm not crazy about using the screw-
in steps, so I'm looking at one of those 3-piece lightweight
ladders. One modification to the Loc-On, I didn't like carrying it
by the chain so I sewed light backpack-style straps on it. I keep
a bungee cord on the stand to a) secure the chain while carrying
and b) to secure the pack straps while it's in the tree.

The platform is a bit smaller than I like, but the stand feels very
solid under my well-over-200-pound hide ;-)
