335.0. "Favorite hunting + fishing shows" by SCOMAN::BING () Fri Jan 13 1989 08:45

Anyone have any favorite hunting and or fishing shows? I live in
Shrewsbury, Ma. and we have quite a few on every weekend. Sat.
mornings starting aroung &;30 I think, on ESN. The shows go until
0;30 or so. I missed the one last week on calling gobblers. The
host was showing how to use mouth diaphrams which I am trying
to learn. My favorite show is "Adventures in the wilderness"
hosted by (I forgot his name) and a close second is "Outdoor Trail"
hosted by Wayne Pearson. The worst is "Outdoor secrets, with Babe
Winklemen". I can't stand his attitude towards the outdoors. The
main thing I did'nt like about his show was that one time he shot
a deer and said very sarcasticly " I got you, you sucker!" I
personally thought that was uncalled for. Also on sundays starting
at 11:30 on TNN there are about 3 hours of fishing and hunting.

p.s. just one question. why is it you never see any of these
guy's with a hunting or fishing license?

    Re: non-display of license.
Most states do not require you to wear your Hunting or Fishing license
exposed. I wonder why they started that silly custom anyways....
after all theres no law forcing us to wear our drivers license.

Another reason could be that they may be fishing or hunting on a
private hunting/fishing preserve where a license may not be necessary.

I noticed a deer hunting show last weekend, it is called Buckmasters
and is on the Nashville station (this station usually has lots of
country music on it). Anyway, the show seemed promising. Its on at
1:30 on Sundays (this was in Nashua NH)

Last weeks was part 2 of a hunters challenge type of contest with teams
made of 1 celeb and 2 or 3 writers/experts etc (celebs included Bo
Jackson, Wade Boggs, Jack Lambert) some celebs were Mr Peterson from
Peterson hunting mag, olympic archery champ.

The contests were knife throwing, hatchet throwing, atv driving,
archery golf (deer sillote (sp?) as the hole) and 3 different sillote
deer shoots, archery, rifle from a tree stand and pistol. Each shoot
had 4 situations, one of which was a no-shoot situation due to safety,
doe blocking the shot etc. The target was a rectangle over the kill
zone, looked to be about 8x10".

They also had a hunt with all venison going to orphanages, hospitals
etc. They mentioned that each hunter got 5 bullets, but the single
shot sure kill was strived for. The biggest buck for this went to Bo
Jackson with a 12 pointer, one shot at 75 yds.

Next week is going to be on Rattling bucks in Texas.

The show was based in Alabama.

Any other info on this show?

335.4Hunting ad during the newsROULET::BINGTue Aug 22 1989 04:0211

Today 8/21 at 6:30 p.m. on channel 5 I actually saw an ad for
Lew Hortons in FFramingham. What really surprised me was the fact
that it showed people hunting and one guy was carrying a turkey
over his shoulder. It really surprised me to see to see this on
channel 5. They are usauly aginst hunting and guns. But if you
wave enough money in front of the right person they can change
thier minds real quick. This was also during the news so im sure
    alot of people saw it....

I work at Lew Hortons part time. Believe me when I say that
alot of thought went into those ads. There was much discussion
between the people at channel 5 and at Hortons before the format
for the ad was aproved. If you like the ad, and would like to see
more positive images for sportsmen in the media, it wouldn't hurt
to tell Channel 5 that you saw the ad and were pleased with it.
You _know_ the antis will be calling.

Lew Hortons has a way of getting what they want - like the
time they asked S&W to make a special run of guns. S&W said
no way. LH said "We want 5000. Will pay cash." S&W said
    "OK, yessir, right away."

    Ya gotta love it.
335.7Channel 5 is feeling the heat.GIAMEM::J_AMBERSONWed Aug 23 1989 13:458
Well, as predicted, the antis have been bombarding Channel 5
with protests over the Ad that is running for Hortons. There have
even been calls to the store itself.
If you would like to help in counteracting the onslaught, the
number for Channel 5 is 617-449-0400. Let them know that you apreciate
them showing sportsmen in a positive manner.

I was watching a show Sat. morn called The American Outdoorsman(?).
They were showing the diiferent types of guns and showning safe
handling, which i thought was great. Then they started to show the
different positions to fire from. There was an instructor and a
guy shooting. He was using a lever action 22. The first stance was
standing. Then he went to a kneeling postion and fired. He then
levered another shell into the chamber , while looking at the
instructor and not where the gun was pointing. The gun had a live
round in the chamber the hammer was back and then the guy went from
a kneeling position to a sitting postion and levered the gun again!

Unless they edited something out of the show the guy was not only
careless, but ejected a live shell and did not even know it. If
they want to educate peple that is great and I would like to see
more of it, but they should get it right.
