179.0. "Official 7mm-08 note" by SPMFG1::CHARBONND (I get the top) Tue Jul 05 1988 13:00

This note is for discussion of the 7mm-08 Remington.

The 7mm-08 is the commercial version of the 7mm-308
wildcat developed by silhouette shooters for long-range
shooting. It combines the short-case efficiency of the
308 Win. with the ballistic superiority of the 7 mm.
    bullets.

For hunting, it is loaded by Remington with 140 grain
softpoints for large game, and with 120 grain hollow
    points for varmints.

Guns currently currently chambered for it include the
Browning BLR, Sako, and Remington model 700 and model 7.

The cartridge loses little velocity from 22" to 18"
barrels, making it suitable for short carbines, such as
the Model 7 Remington (my own gun, and yes, I'm in love :-) )

Note of caution : commercial cases from Remington are
slightly longer than the parent 308 cases. If your
gun was chambered for the wildcat, factory ammo will
be crimped by the short chamber, causing dangerous
pressures. On the other hand, 308 brass sized down
will be slightly shorter than factory ammo.

My hunting experience has been limited to one season with
the gun, shot a spike white-tail opening morning. High
chest shot resulted in the deer dropping on the spot.
(I suspect shock to the spinal column helped - shot was
too high.) This with factory 140 gr. bullets. Hoping
to add more experience this fall :-)

Currently reloading the Hornady 139 gr. softpoint with
47 grains of WW760 in Rem. cases.

Aside - tried the 120 gr. bullets off the bench - three
shots into a group you could cover with a quarter - this
    with a light carbine. 140's shoot into 1 1/2 - 2", and
no, I'm not an experienced rifleman. Yet.

Just to add a model, the A-Bolt series in Browning also offers it.
I have this caliber in the "87" Medallion with a 3x9 Leupold compact
scope, what a combination. I haven't had it out yet but will be
zeroing in very shortly. I will be for now shooting the factory
    ammo 140gr.

179.2Need ballistics for 7MM-08ATEAM::AYOTTEWed Jan 11 1989 16:1110
Does anyone out there have any ballistics on this cartridge? I've
narrowed down the field to the .270 and the 7MM Express Remington
    (280) but a friend recommended that I at least look further into
the 7MM-08. I thought the hard work was done after making up my
mind to go with a Remington 700 (even though it isn't as pretty
as a Ruger and the safety is no bargain)!!!!!! Oh well, I don't
"need" the gun til April so this gives me something to do til then.
Any info on the 7MM-08 (particularly with a 145 BT) will be
    appreciated.

    Dave,

i have the reloading book in front of me, it says that its a
highly effective silhouette cartridge, and is an ideal choice for
medium sized North American game... Its a 308 case necked down to
    7mm.

I don't have anything on the 145, but have balistics on the 139
    and 154 grain spire points.

139 grain can be driven to 2500 fps +- depending on powders, 4064
    being the best bet.

154 grain can be pushed to 2350-2400 fps again depending on powders.
test rifle had best results with 4064 and 4320. add 100 fps for
    the model 700 barrels.

    hope this helps ya.

factory load develops 2750 fps - from a 18" barrel

at 300 yards retained energy is superior to most
similar calibers. Layne Simpson has written a few
articles on this gun in Shooting Times.

The round is loaded to higher pressures than the .280
or 7mm Mauser, hence the better ballistics. Others are
limited by the large quantities of older guns around.

previous note should read Sierra 100 gr. Hollowpoint, not
    Hornady.

This bullet with 47.0 grains of W760 also produces good groups.
Am still working up to max with this powder, no excessive
    pressure signs yet.

And I finally got some Nosler 140 grain Ballistic Tips, after
waiting two months. Starting load will be 45.0 grains of W760.
This year, deer with a handload is the personal goal.

Update to .6 - the load consisting of a CCI 200 primer, 45.0
grains of WW760 and the Nosler 140 grain Ballistic Tip shot
very well, considerably better than the factory fodder. (Three
shots into 1.1 inch at 100 yds.) So well, I never bothered to
fiddle around with powder charge, just loaded a box and went
hunting. Unfortunately, the whitetails got smarter this year.

Have since purchased a box of Barnes X-bullets, 7mm 140 grain,
(*expensive*!!) and will be working up loads for this as time
    allows.

Have been admiring the Browning A-Bolt Micro-Medallion in this
caliber, gorgeous wood, looks just like my A-Bolt 22, 20 inch
barrel. Now if only I can find the $$

The 'New Products' article in the latest issue of Guns & Ammo had
two items of interest - Remington will introduce a 7mm-08 load
in their 'Extended Range' series of premium ammo. It will use
a 154 grain bullet. Also, Winchester will be chambering their Model
    70 Featherweight in this caliber.

I'm sorta PO'd that no other company has announced factory ammo
in this caliber, but since my handloads are shooting so well...
    ;-) ;-)
