1199.0. "Stocking areas in S. NH" by REGENT::BENDEL () Thu Sep 24 1992 14:02

    OK, I've got a question. As a new resident of Hudson, NH, I've got
    a lot to learn about the area and where to hunt. I'm mainly interested
    in bird hunting (not ducks/geese) woodcok,grouse, and pheasant. What
    I find difficult is this: while the state does stock, they don't make
    it known WHERE they stock. I payed my $16.00 for a pheasant stamp, and
    would like to shoot a few, but don't know where they stock. I'm told
    that word of mouth gets the locations known, but I don't know many
    people in the area, and the sport shops sort of give you vague
    locations, more like clues which direction to head. Seems to me like
    if you pay for the birds, you should know where they are going ! Can
    anyone inform me about locations in Hudson/Pelham/Litchfield area ?
    I have a young Brittany that I'm anxious to hunt with, and want to
    run her in productive cover as much as possible.

    			tips appreciated,

    I agree with you that the state should tell you where they stock.
    Unfortunately, I don't hunt that area. Hopefully, others here can
    give you specific locations.

    If you have vague clues from any sources so far, take a drive around
    the area and look for likely locations. Often you will see orange
    signs posted by the fish and game. They usually say no vehicle
    access, but I've only seen them around pheasant stocking areas.

    Good luck,
    Mark

1199.2**** I KNOW A PLACE ****MTADMS::GALLOThu Sep 24 1992 16:2111
                     I'm not sure about southern part, But
                     Hopkinton N.H. does alot of stocking.
                     By Elm Brook park. I could give you
                     more details if you want to call me.
                     Great place to have a dog. Exit 4 off
                     89 onto route 202.

1199.3Try calling F&G in ConcordVSSTEG::TOWLECorkyMon Sep 28 1992 14:232
 I thought the F&G office in Concord had a list of stocked areas you could
request?
1199.4The lists are vague as well !!REGENT::BENDELMon Sep 28 1992 14:3911
    I think F&G has a list of the towns stocked, not actual locations. I
    just heard that last weekend at a local Gun Shop. he said that usually
    Concord mails them a bunch to distribute, but this year they haven't.
    Fortunately there are hunters in this conference that don't try to
    keep local knowledge a secret, and I'll be checking out a couple spots
    when I have some time. I also will be willing to share any info that I
    come across with other noters.

    			thanks for the help

1199.5it's a secret!ELWD1::GATHMon Sep 28 1992 15:489
    Ok here's the big secret.. Please don't tell anyone.

    ( looking to the left and right )

    In Hudson , This is a Hot spot, In hudson they stock

    Neadeau's Farm.
    don't tell anyone I told you.
1199.6DATABS::STORMMon Sep 28 1992 16:0312
    Bear, are you sure of that? Last week I over heard a conversation in
    a sporting goods shop that was going to be closed this year. I didn't
    pay too much attention since I don't hunt there, but I do recognize
    the name.

    I know this is a long shot, but while we are on the subject, does
    anyone know where they stock in Moultonborough? The state lists
    2 sites there, but I haven't been able to find them.

    Thanks,
    Mark

    Over the weekend I received the the N.H. Highlights put out by the
    F&G Dept. and they had an article on Pheasants in it. The article
    stated that 10,000 birds would be stocked in 4 sessions and that
    they also had a listing of which towns received the stocking. So
    it should be available.

                                                Guy

1199.8Pls forgive me, I'm just having a little funELWD1::GATHMon Sep 28 1992 21:0928
    If you say they are not going to stock there anymore
    well what can I say. I don't have privy to such information.

    and besides I am sure that everyone understood that when it was
    a stocking site it was no real secret.

    For the most part they stock public land and a few private places
    that is open to hunting.

    Usuall the information isn't that hard to acuire. Local stores
    and even some CO's will share the information. Some won't for reasons
    only they know.

    The information gets around some how. It was a place I heard of.

    Guy lives over that way. He should know everywhere.

    start going to some local clubs and befriend some of the
    locals then just mention you been going out but don't know where
    to go....

    Usually someone will feed you some information...

    Oh by the way Hopkinton is good info I have hunted there.. Birds
    everywhere. It seemed we would jump them in every little cover.
    I Thought it was a secret though...shhh..

    No, Bear it looks like you are correct. It seems what I overheard
    was some B/S.

    I agree that the stocking areas should be no big secret. I don't
    understand why the state refuses to give out that info. It makes
    no sense to me. It's just the opposite in Mass. You can take topo
    maps into the field office and they will mark all the local covers
    in it that they stock. Tell you where it's OK to park, etc.

    Mark,

1199.10Hudson still stocked, dog's first bird !REGENT::BENDELWed Oct 07 1992 13:3112
    They are still stocking the Hudson area mentioned, and as a matter of
    fact they put some birds out Tuesday morning. Not a lot, but some. My
    dog got her first exposure to pheasants, needless to say she loved it,
    and even though she's basically an untrained one year old, she did
    point and hold one perfectly for me. Once they flushed, well that was
    another story, but one thing at a time. We ended up with one, but if
    I shot better I should have had my limit of two, I shot at three birds.
    (now for the excuse, I hadn't even fired my gun in about four years,
    and that coupled with my excitement didn't help my shooting :-) :-)
