454.0. "Maine marinas" by SCIVAX::DAY () Mon Jul 31 1989 13:05

In Rockland, Maine there is a marina named Knight's Marine. I stopped
there Saturday and asked the young lady in charge for gas, ice and
jalapenos for the ceviche. She hesitated before saying she could
help me with the gas and ice but not the jalapenos. When I asked
if there were a store nearby, she mentioned the IGA right up the
street but thought they might be too small to carry jalapenos.
I checked out the IGA but, alas, no jalapenos. When I returned
to the marina, the young lady told me that if I waited for five
minutes her friend who had gone for jalapenos would return! She
explained that he had gone to get her a sandwich and would look
for jalapenos for me. Indeed, in five minutes he returned with
    the jalapenos!

    Not your usual marina.

Was the request for jalapenos a joke, or are you usually able to have
all your non-boat-specific requests of a marina fulfilled? My
dictionary doesn't even tell me what a ceviche is.

454.2Don't forget the jalapenos!COGITO::DAYWed Aug 02 1989 14:2833
    No joke!

Ceviche is a white fish (I prefer haddock) marinated in lemon juice,
olive oil, oregano, basil, coriander and a touch of white wine or
vinegar AND jalapenos. It is my usual fare on board as it is easy
and delicious - eat it with tortilla chips. I had bought the fish
in South Bristol Friday afternoon and had cruised up to Andrews
Island along Muscle Ridge Channel for the night (in my 15' Lyman),
dropped anchor, chopped up the haddock in cubes and made the ceviche
and stored it in the cooler. While floating around Pleasant Island
Saturday morning it suddenly dawned on me that I'd forgatten the
    jalapenos!!!

So I thought Rockland would be the best bet and went to Knight's
    Marine.

Sidenote - non-food subject: the next night I was on my way to
Damariscove Island and passed a sloop barely making headway in the
1-2 knot wind. As I passed he waved me over and asked if I could
radio the Coast Guard to call his wife to tell her he would be late
because his engine was overheating and he was removing the thermostat.
I didn't have my radio but told him I'd tell a boat in Damariscove
to call. I stopped at the first boat in the cove (a forty foot
sloop) and relayed the story. When I told him the sailor in trouble
was off the White Islands, he looked at my boat and me, paused and
asked in an incredulous tone, "Have you been cruising?" "Oh sure"
I replied, "came up from Penobscot Bay this afternoon. A bit rough
in spots but not a bad trip." (Northly winds and thundershowers
had kicked up quite a chop!) I think my Lyman (made from wood from
trees back in 1958) is about the smallest cruising boat on the coast
    - I've been from Portland to Cutler.)

I KNOW all you coastal cruisers are wondering about the availability of
jalapenos in Boothbay Harbor.... well, as of last weekend, Carbone's
Boothbay Fruit Factory did NOT have any jalapenos! I know it's hard to
    believe but it's true!

So don't forget your jalapenos! Ceviche with crushed red peppers just
    doesn't make it.
