520.0. "Info on Pequod wanted" by WONDER::BRODEUR () Thu Sep 21 1989 14:08

I am trying to do a bit of research for a buddy of mine. He is looking
at a boat called a Pequod. Its a 34' 4" fiberglass boat built in
1975. What I know is this boat is modeled after a wooden boat called
Calypso (spelling?). In the early 70's it was then made in glass
    and built in N.H.

Anybody know about the Pequod? It is supposed to be a very well
built boat, a very efficient hull design (planes easily and takes
the seas with ease), good craftsmanship on the interior, etc. He
He prefers boats with the "old" lines and naturally his budget narrows
    down a lot possibilities.

Any info on the boat, the company, or anything else that would be
helpful in judging this boat is appreciated.

I recall the Calypso. It was built for a short time in N.H.
It appeared in a Boston boat show and drew a lot of attention.
It had excellent quality and good craftsmanship. The company
went out of business because the boat was to expensive to built
in New England and compete with the junk that was coming out of
the south and the midwest. I have not seen any around the
south shore of Boston. I did not know that they built the Pequod.
I did not know that they had the capability to build fiberglass.
You had better check this out!

You may also try some of the folks on Lake Winnipesaukee because
most of the sales of the boat were fairly local.

Funny you should bring this up. about 4 yrs. ago maybe 5, i was
interested in a larger boat. If my memory serves Pequod did make
a glass boat. I found 4 of them at a dealers in Maine, but today
I cannot remember the dealers name. I believe the add may have
appeared in Offshore. Possible you may be able to call them
    and get further info.

Calypso's and Pequods were very popular on Winni. in the late 60's
and early 70's. You might phone The Silver Sands Marina in Gilford
who, if my memory serves me correctly, were dealers. If not they've
been in existence some time and may give you some leads.

I also can put you in touch with one owner if you give me a call
    at DTN 229-7054.

A Pequod is a fiberglas version of the wooden Calypso which was a new
    name for the original Pembroke.

Pembroke boats were built in Pembroke, N.H. (at the intersection of
Rte. 3 and Rte. 28...now a modular home factory next to Suburban
Furniture). They had a small family of boats from about 26 ft. up
to 34 or 36. Pembroke went out of business. The plugs were sold and a
new company, Calypso, was formed. They built only the larger boats -
in one of the old brick buildings in the railroad yard in Concord, N.H.

They eventually failed as well, and the boat was copied to fiberglas
and built under the name Pequod...I believe in Florida.

Pembrokes, Calypsos and Pequods can all still be found on Lake
Winnipesaukee today....in fact a 34' Pequod is for sale at one of the
slips at Gilford Yacht Club, Rte 11, Gilford, N.H.
520.5Wanna build em??WONDER::BRODEURThu Oct 19 1989 13:1814
Well I did find out a bit more about the Pequod. Went up to winni
and say 3 or 4 of them as well as a Calypso. Nice traditional lines
to it (them) and the Pequods seemed to be holding up very well for
    their age.
Also found out that there is someone who is trying to revive the
Pequod. He has the molds for the hull and the bridge and is looking
for help. If you have 20 to 30 thou thats just burning a hole in
your pocket and like to live dangerously, give me a call and I'll
    set you up with him!

    Thanks for the replies,
