2.0. "Introductions Please..." by ASPEN2::BOIKO () Thu May 12 1988 16:01

Well as Rick said in 1.0...Welcome Back to the Boats notesfile. As
has been the practice on previous incarnations of this file, note #2 will be
used for Introductions.

I know what you guy's and gal's are saying, here we go again. But this
time around things will be a little different. Rick and I have brought this
file to a large VAXcluster in Salem NH, run by the very people entrusted with
validating DEC's VAXcluster's. (VAXcluster Engineering and Validation Group)

So let the games begin....Introduce yourself and Welcome to the DEC
Boating Community.

My name is John Gunnerson and I do not have a powerboat. Yet. Thanks
to the folks in BOATS V2.0, I have pretty much decided on the type of
boat I need for the waters around Cape Cod, and particularly in
Nantucket Sound, while owning a little condo in Harwich. Fianances,
read: value of DECstock, have prevented me from signing up for a new
Four Winns 235 Sundowner. Since they were new last year, it seems to
early to find used ones yet. I'll be looking at other brands and
models of used boats of this type until the fianancial picture improves.

    Hey Rick and Mike!!

Thanks for findin a new home for the conference, and good lick with
    all the summer fun.

Name's Ed Keltz. I work at MLO in the EMAS-IS Telecom Consulting
    group. I have a 16.6 foot Sea Shark with a 105 Chrystler that I've
just overhauled. It runs great. Live in Nashua and do most of
my boating in southern N.H. for fishing purposes. Not really into
skiing, but enjor reading 'bout other peoples adventures.

I've benifited from many suggestions and ideas in the old (I mean
both old) boating notes files and look forward to many more suggestions
    in the new one.

    Hello Fellow water rats!

My name is Rick Suter, I work at CHM and live in *historic*
Lowell, Ma. My boat is a 19 foot Correct Craft Ski Nautique of
the 1987 vintage. It's powered by a PCM 351 Ci, 250 hp straight
    inboard engine.

I am an avid waterskier (like you didn't know that, right?)
and boat on various bodies of water, to include Province lake -
So Effingham, NH | Lakeview - Tyngsboro, Ma | Webster lake -
Webster?, Ma | Merrimack River - Lowell, Ma |

Someday I'd like to name the Nautique, at the top of the list
    is "Corrective Action"....

    Glad to be back online!

    I have a 1987 Larson 165 Citation bow-rider with a 120 I/O. I used
it last year (first year owning a boat) on the Conn. River, on Lake
Congammond in Southwick, Massachusetts and in Cape Cod Bay. I trailer
it with a 1986 Ford Aerostar Van, which does an 'ok' job. This year
I plan to do most of my boating in Cape Cod Bay....since the house
I just bought is right there. Glad to see boat:notes back again.

Will be moving up to a 24-25 footer hopefully (read DEC stock bounces

It took me 3 tries to get it right, but I currently have a
1986 BAJA Sunsport 200. It is 20 ft. long and has a Mariner
150 Magnum outboard and a stainless 19 pitch prop. That
combination will take me about 55 mph at Pueblo (~4800 feet
up). I've had it going 65 mph at 1200 feet above sea level.
I have a wife and 3 kids and would also recommend the Baja
as a good family boat. I fish, ski, and just plain have fun
with the boat. Skiing is my favorite though (I'm going tomorrow
        after work).

My favorite lakes here in Colorado are:
Pueblo - Crowded, but the closest. I have my boat
        		 moored there this year.
Navajo - 7-8 hours away, but worth the drive. You
can always find smooth water there.
Blue Mesa - 4 hours away, and 9000 feet up. The water
is cold, but it is always like glass until
around noon (and then watch out!)

My favorite lake anywhere is Lake Powell. It is 10-12 hours
away, but worth the drive when I can get away. Getting a
houseboat makes it even better. I was skiing there 3 weeks
        ago.

    I currently have a 22' C-Dory. It's powered by a 90 hp Johnson
    with a 10 hp Honda kicker. It's a fisherman's dream. I use it
in the ocean a lot (chinook, silvers and any bottom fish that I
can get), but with the nearness of the rivers (Columbia and Willamette
run through town) I spend most of my time there. Right now the
chinook run is in full swing and on any weekend and most evenings
    she'll be in the water.

I should note it also has a head, sink, reefer and table, so it
    is quite comfortable.

	 Who: Garry Baer
	Work: LKG2

	Boat: 18' Baja w/175hp outboard

Used to live on Bare Hill pond in Harvard and am now carving my way
thru the woods of Ashby. In the good Ole' days (single w/money to burn),
"that ole gang of mine" used to run tunnel hydro's on Winni. Anyone out there
remember the blue RABCO's under the Weir's bridge with the party on shore?

Alas - Now that Winni has become the playground of the rich and the:

"GEE, LOOK AT THE PRETTY RED & BLACK BOUYS. WHY ARE THEY IN A LINE?"

I have moved most of my boating activity to Sebago & Moosehead. We are
planning a 2 week trip (3 couples - 3 boats) upcountry the last 2 weeks in
August. IF anyone is going to be on either of the 2 lakes send EMAIL.
Until later-

Greetings:

Dean Hamel here... currently in possession of a 1981
Mastercraft tournament waterski boat. Tons of power,
minimal [no] wake; who could ask for more?

Previously owned an 19 foot Searay with a 260 hp Merc.
I/O. I lived in Burlington, Vermont and kept the boat on
Lake Champlain; boating paradise. I had a very tough time
parting with this boat but got so hung up on skiing that I
had to make the move to the MC. No regrets... :-)

Being new to the Southern N.H. area, I cannot say where
I will be skiing. The boat will be on the water by Memorial
Day. Hope this weather {as well as this node} keeps up!

For those "itching to see 5 at 32 off..." you probably
won't see it here. This comment was made in jest (as I imagine
was yours). Its simply one of those elusive goals one has in
life; like winning mega bucks, or finding a real job that allows
you sufficient free time to ski whenever the sun shines and the
    wind doesn't blow.

                    See you on the water!

                              - Dean -

Hi there. I'm Bill Bell and have a 17' 4Winn bowrider.
It is a 1986 with 170 Mercruiser I/O. Had originally bought it
to use on Lake Sebago where we had a cottage. Will be changing the
ME number for MS this year because it will be moored in Falmouthport.
Our place is on the Coonameset River which leads into Great Pond.
Didn't have musch time to enjoy the boat last summer in the waters
around Cape Cod, but plan to get it ready to launch this week-end.
Mostly like cruising around and taking the kids water skiing.

I do have some concerns that a 17 footer may be too small for the
waters around the Cape. Probably will "have" to upgrade to something
with a potty by next year.

will be looking forward to discussing boats with you.

My name's Ed Bourgault. Work at HLO (Hudson MA) in a wafer
Fab, wearing a top-to-toes bunny suit on third shift. Got
into NOTES to relieve occasional boring periods. Live in
Worcester, MA - moving into our first house Memorial Day
    weekend (5/28/88).

Spent years with people-powered boats - canoes, rowboats,
kayaks a bit - then enlisted in the Coast Guard. After
some training on small boats (30' single diesel, 40' twin)
went through Radio School, spent much of the remaining 3 years
sitting on shore answering "weekend boaters" in trouble,
directing CG boats to assist, etc.. Also learned to sail small
(started on a Sunfish) sailboats on my off time.

Also spent 6 different summers being Aquatics Director at a
large Boy Scout reservation near Worcester... teaching
swimming, rowing, canoeing, sailing, snorkelling, and
whatever else needed doing. An interesting period of my life...

Now working on "resurrecting" father-in-law's 16' outboard
(make escapes me at the moment) that will be run in the
sheltered waters near Bath, Maine. I got married 4 years
ago, her two boys are now 7 1/2 (DO NOT forget that half!!)
and almost 11. They've both enjoyed canoe rides, etc., and
we're ready for some group activities on the water. (Despite
the fact that wife does NOT swim, and is reluctant to attempt
to learn....)(Yes, we have good PFDs - even Daddy wears one!)

I had just gotten into the previous incarnation of BOATS when
it disappeared... but I found a number of little tidbits that
got tucked into the mental file, and will find a use soon....
I don't expect to say much (even when somebody flames the Coast
Guard) but will continue reading this file as and when I can.

I work in the Mill with the diagnostic engineering group, live in
Worcester and own a 16' 1965 Correct Craft Mustang with 289 Ford
powerplant. Just rebuilt the motor and looking forward to getting
it in the water soon. I do (or I'm willing to try) anything related
to water sports, especially skiing/barefoot/tubing/kneeboard. I
ski on an O'Brien KGX and have acquired most of the other toys required
to inflict bodily harm upon myself, including a front toehold barefoot
harness, tubes and ski bob, Magna (Hydroslide) kneeboard, and Connelly
combos. I've been known to go over the jump and can two-ski trick
ski, 180s, 360s (metza-metz) and backwards deep water start
(occasionally). Since we just had our first successful GUMBALL on
Saturday (5/14), I'd like to see more of us get together for a day
    of skiing merriment.

See you "on the waters of the world" (that's Correct Craft talk) :-) ...

Hi! My name's Bill Karl and I own an 18' bow rider with a 120
Mercruiser I/O. The boat was made by Brevard which is in Florida
and I guess is pretty much of an unknown name since I never
see the name Brevard in the Want Ads!

Anyway, I keep the boat moored in Jamestown, R. I. and mostly
use it to fish for blue fish. I've been skiing on it a couple of
times, too. I really want to move up to about a 25' boat - but

2.20I like boats!SALEM::M_TAYLORI call it sin...Tue May 17 1988 11:5822
Hi. I'm Mike Taylor, and work in IN-DEC field service in Salem,
NH. When I'm not working and the weather is warm, my wife, 4 yr.
old boy, and 5 yr old dog can be found in our Four Winns 19-foot
bow-rider, which we'll moor on Lake Winnisquam this year, and will
tow almost anywhere with our Real-sized '88 Blazer. We do skiing
recreationally (whenever we can!) and I enjoy crashing through my
boat's monster-wake on one ski. To real skiiers, the name of the
game is to make it around them bouys (or markers--I wouldn't want
to try skiing around some of the bouys I saw in the Navy ;^) )
but, to me, the real challenge is to cross the wake safely!
I wonder if trim tabs would help flatten that wake at 30 MPH???
It's really not that much fun skiing through that wake, especially
    for pregnant women!
I tend to pay close attention to the technical end of boating, mainly
in the mechanics of boats, but also enjoy immensely reading about
some of the maniacs out there and their stunts on the waters.
I hope all our boating friends out there have a safe and great season.
    I have but one request...

No winterizing questions till after Labor Day (Beginning of September
    for our international friends)!!!

much as some of the other people in this file but a bass fisherman
tests a boat and motor to it limits, and learns a lot about performance
    and endurance.

My name is Paul Bernard and my boat is a Glastron SSV-167, in
the water up on Long Lake in Bridgton, Maine. It has a Merc 90
outboard and we use it for skiing, fishing, and cruising. It's a
bowrider and I haven't seen a boat yet that I'd trade it for, it
fits my needs nicely and not one bit of trouble in 5 years. Many
times I have been the tow-er for someone on the lake, but never
the tow-ee. Jon Pearson (note 2.31) made mention of how nice it
is to go the length of Long Lake, across Brandy Pond, through the
Songo Locks and out on to Sebago, and he's right on the money. It's
a must for someone in that area. There is a place in Naples, Maine
right on the causeway called "The Eatin" and Meetin" Place that
serves a pretty good breakfast, and around 7 in the morning it's
common for folks to head down there and tie up.

Let's hope for lots of sunny weekends and good vacation time,
if any of you are on Long Lake and see a guy in a cream colored
Glastron over in Monday Cove or at Salmon Point plugging for
    bass, stop and say hello.

	Size: 17' 4"

Prop: 24 Pitch SS Turbo II
Boat Color: White Hull, gun metal gray metalflake, yellow and silver trim
	Interior Color: Off-White, Charcoal ,Yellow
Tunes: Alpine AM/FM Cassette Stereo with Mini monitor box speakers
Top Gun and Miami Vice tapes sound great when cruising.

Top Speed: This depends on water conditions, weight in boat,

    Hello,

I'm John Worcester and I work at the Burlington manufacturing plant
in Vermont and my home is in Hinesburg. It's a 20 mile minimum
towing trip from 900' elevation at home to the shores of Lake
Champlain... a considerble strain on the car towing it back up the
hill going home. (I'm buying a new Cutlass Ciera w/V6 engine, 2.8liter
w/2,000 lbs towing capacity this summer). I've been towing w/4WD
AMC Eagle and it has 86,000 miles on it and sitting at the garage waiting
for parts back ordered last week.

I own a 16' Steury glass boat with '83 Merc outboard motor. I do
boating on Lake Champlain with some fishing. No water-skiing due
skiing accident in 1972 at a party in Shelburne,VT.,(phobia). Although
my spouse wants to try it I may be able to show her how, but not
this year. We take our daughters swimming instead and they're learning
pretty well, which is important. Their ages are 4 and 6.

Anyone know of a Steury boat dealer. My boat needs a new canvass
    cover.

Hello All! I'm Robin Skinner, just starting my tenth year with
DEC, and a new job in LKG (Littleton, MA) as a Service Product
Manager for CSSE working on wide area network products.

I'm new to this file and couldn't resist introducing myself after
seeing the previous entry.. My vacation plans for the past two
summers included joining Ken (#2.62) in waterskiing the English
Channel!! Maybe I'll make it by next year..

I spent my first 18 summers on a small lake in Holliston, MA, boating
and waterskiing daily, and have missed those activities dearly since
I've had to work for a living. But I've just fulfilled one of my
dreams by buying a lakefront home in Milford, MA, where I hope to
have a boat to waterski with by next summer (despite the plunging
price of DEC stock..) I'm sure this file will come in handy when
I start looking to buy a used boat.

In the meantime, if anyone in the New England area wants to give
me a ride or a bit of practice time on skis, please send mail!

When not in the water, you can find me out dancing (I organize an
oldies/swing dance group at DEC), or out on the ski slopes, or
collecting yet another speeding ticket on the highways!! I love
    going fast in any form!

We live in Amherst, NH, and trail our two boats. Biggest boat is

trail it between the big lakes (and some not-so-big) in NH,
        Hampton Harbor, and Rhode Island.

Second boat is a 14-1/2' Sea Nymph with a 15 Johnson. It's set up
and used for small lake fishing: live well, bass seats,
        carpeting, etc.

Since I've just entered a note asking for advice on Yamaha dealers
in NH, I feel I should introduce myself. I got this boat new in
1958 and have become quite familiar with its capabilities and
limitations. I have mostly used it around the Boothbay Harbor area
where there is extensive sheltered cruising on the Sheepscot and
Kennebeck Rivers and connecting waterways. (There's even a spot
where the water always seems to be warm enough to swim in - it's
right off Baily Point in Montsweag Bay - at night the fish glow
too - just leave your Geiger counters at home.)

When I've got the time for extended cruising, I usually head East
around Pemaquid Point for Penobscot Bay (on one such trip the sea
was calm enough to cut across the mouth from Metinic Green Island
to Duck Harbour on Isle au Haut - about 26 nautical miles!). I've
been within sight of Canada (Grand Manan Island) but have not made
it all the way - YET! Next summer with the new Yamaha 50! I spent
a week floating around Mt. Desert Island and environs this summer.
The boat has a top with side curtains and a tarp that fastens to
the stern and comes up underneath the top so I'm fully covered in
the night rain. I've built a 'sleeping platform' that just gives
me enough room to stretch out to sleep. The platform is in two
pieces which will fit upright behind the rear seat to form the
seat-back. I've got a two burner propane stove used mostly for hot
coffee in the morning. I installed running lights, cabin lights
and a couple of good quality marine speakers (the paper is covered
with a very thin coat of rubber). It took me two days in "zero
visibility" fog to finally figure out that the wiring and speakers
were doing very funny things to my compass!!! (If you have an eight
mile run across open water and your compass is off by 12 degrees,
when you shut off the motor to listen for the whistle on the buoy,
YOU DON'T HEAR ANYTHING!!!!) Boy, wasn't that a hoot!!! Two days
of it on the way to Bar Harbour - "visibility: zero" said NOAA
each morning. They were right, too. On my return trip the fog
cleared but the wind was strong. NOAA said light variable 5 - 15
mph. Strange how those light to variable winds kicked up a 5 -
7 foot chop with white caps!!! I guess they forgot to mention the
30 - 40 knot gusts!!! When I had to head straight into a sea like
that I've found from many years experience in this boat that tacking
seems to make things a bit more bearable.

    So next year to Canada!!!!

I'm looking for used Century ski boat stuff (boarding ladder, hull

boat and it seems very well built. I can't seem to get any feedback (good or
bad) about the company. Does anybody know anything (even rumors) about Rinker?
Since it's my first boat, is there any specific things I should look for
when buying that all you experienced boaters have already learned? Any
feedback of any kind would be great. Send replies to note 250.

If it wern't for that nasty little ground hog that poped up a week

On the other hand, with the global warming taking place, and the

Been reading this conference for a while now. Although alot of it
is usefull only for US locals it's fun reading. I'm Jim Sadler in

A friend and I started of owning a boat together which was a 15 ft

year and my mate bought a 16ft Magnum with 140 hp Evinrude hanging
of the back end, which is usually what I ski behind nowadays.

2.91Boating at the Cote d'AzurMADMAC::ZEEMulti-Processing pure SchizophreniaMon Feb 20 1989 11:3719
Hello Everybody,

My name is Harrie van der Zee. I relocated 2 years ago from
Holland over to Valbonne in the south of France.
I started "boating" 10 years ago with a 9 feet inflatable
currently I have my fifth boat a 19 feet "Rocca super Apollo"
with is a French make ,powered by a 165 OMC , it is a category 4
boat with means it is official allowed to go out of the cost for max. 20
miles.

Somebody mentioned a while ago that boating is a disease and that people
are always thinking about buying a bigger one.
So last week I visited a 20M$ or more yaught of 130 feet which is moored
in the harbour of Antibes ,their was more gold spread over all the bathrooms
and showers then the complete value of my "Rocca" but I know my goal and
with a grow average of 1 foot per year, I will own a boat like this when I am
about 150 years old :-)

Regards Harrie

I wasn't going to officaly join this note file until I was officaly

    on order so here goes.
I,m Rick Recuparo I live and work out of Syracuse NY, I bought a

I will be keeping the boat in Oneida lake here in central NY and
am thinking about getting in on one of those rack slips they have

I just added this conference to my notebook and figured I'd best check
in early, 'cause I've never been one to stay out of a lively discussion
and it helps if you know who you're talking at. My boss in customer
services has a few more interesting names for me, but I pretty much
just go by Bruce Cornish (Ish for short). I've been blessed with a
locale that includes 10-12 of the finest lakes in Texas withing driving
distance, and spend a lot of time playing around in the coastal
waterways as well. All the rivers around here dump in to the
Intercoastal Waterway, so you can literally cruise the entire Texas
coastline and never stray too far from the cooler. I'm an occasional
fisherman, but basically lack the patience and therefore spend most of
my time tied behind on any of a number of watertoys. The twinkle in
my eye is an 18' Wellcraft Texas Special Edition Bowrider powered by
    a 185hp V-6 Mercruiser I/O that I affectionately refer to as

I've been reading this file for months so I guess it's time for
an intro. My boat is a 28' 1988 Cruisers, Inc. Rogue 2860 with
twin Mercruiser 5.7L 260 hp i/o. The people at the gas docks love
me. I keep her moored on the Mississippi River just south of the
twin cities of Minnepolis and St. Paul. Main activity is cruising
and using the boat like a floating motorhome. Lots of deserted
islands on the river to camp on. As far north as I am the river is
fairly clean so swimming is ok too. Lot's of places to roam as
long as you don't mind going north or south. I've lot's of pratice
using LOCKS along the river too. My current ambition is to travel south
to St. Louis and back up the Illinois Waterway to Chicago
and Lake Michigan then on thru Lake Superior to Duluth, Minnesota
and back again. Figure it'll take about a month and 3000 gal of gas.

Previous boating experience was second hand with other's boats and a
10 year stint in Uncle Sam's canoe club with time on a BIG cruiser.

Checkmate with a 125 Evinrude. Kept that one until 82 when I bought a
19ft. Four Winns 195 Cuddy. Traded that in in '85 and moved up to a
Four Winns 235 Sundowner w/260 I/O, Galley and Head. I finally put
a name on it 2 years ago---Miscellaneous Expenses---.

I have a place on Lake Winnisquam so that's where you will find me. I
just took "M.E." out of the water last weekend and as usual it was a
sad time. Another summer down the tubes!!! Will spend the next several
weekends doing the annual cleaning and then will cover her up for the
winter..Oh well...Ice out is only about 7 months away...have heart.

    Hi,

Been reading this for about 6 weeks, ever since I bought my own.

    Invader 197 Cuddy Cab
    230 horse Merc.

Mostly, (well all so far) out on Puget Sound.

    No personal horror stories

About 22 hours on the boat so far.

Had it up to 50mph at 3800rpm on a nice smooth day (the Sound chops
up at the slightest breeze). Should top out @55+.

Plan for general cruising, fishing, and island hoping in the San
Juans or up in BC after I'm fully comfortable with the boat and
    my seamanship.

I'm Roger Swenson. I'm a sales support person in the Networks group
in wonderful sunny Chicago. I have a 20' Formula with a 230 OMC
(maybe a little more since the Holly carb and cam). Its not a real
fast boat as it's a deep Vee hull. However, on a rough water day
with three foot waves few boats can keep up.

I usually leave the boat on the water in the Chain Of Lakes area
about an hour northwest of Chicago. I can identify with those of
you hitting rocks, the deepest spot on the Chain is only thirty
feet, typical is ten. I went through four props this year until
I learned enough about the shallow spots in the lake.

I enjoy reading about everyones experiences. Too bad summer is
over and winter( and skiing) is still so far away.

wait to get it out of the garage. I mostly use it on Whalom lake in
Lunenburg Ma, also on Winnespaukee my Uncle has a camp on the water.
I have been boating for three years now, my first boat being a 1987

how to do tow-hold tricks.

2.143Let's go skiing!BROKE::THOMASWed Jul 11 1990 22:2526
Hi! I'm Anne Thomas. I live and work in Nashua, NH.

    I have two boats:

The first is an ancient 13' Boston Whaler with a 40hp Johnson that I
keep moored at my parents' house on Quonoquontaug Pond in Westerly, RI.
My family picked this boat up second hand when I was a kid, but it
lives through anything. It's quick off the mark and will pop me up
from a deep water start with no trouble, but its top speed is somewhere
around 25 mph. I can bring the boat to a standstill with a good
cutback. So I needed a new boat. But it's much more convenient
keeping the new one a little closer to home.

The second boat is a 16' Chrysler with a 125hp Force outboard -- top
speed of about 45 mph. It's a little slower getting me out of the
water, but it definitely provides a better ride. Generally, I keep
the boat at a friend's house in Littleton and trailer it to nearby
lakes. I'm currently using a '79 CJ7 for towing. Most often I go to
Forge Pond in Westford, but I've also taken it to Long Lake in Milford,
MA, to Harriman Reservoir in Willmington, VT, and to Nubanusit Lake in
Hancock, NH. I'm interested in checking out different lakes or rivers.

I'm an avid recreational skier, and this year I plan to try skurfing.
Now that summer is finally here, I'm generally looking for skiing
partners for almost any night of the week. If you're interested,
    let me know.

intermediate skier looking for someone who could help me work on some
    of my rough spots.

I would be willing to pay for the gas and drinks :-)

If you interested write me at DSSDEV::ARNDT and we can set something
    up.

Having already solicited some advise from this file I might as well

We picked up our first boat a few weeks ago. My wife and I did a
rather thorough job of looking after we had decided on what features
we wanted. We were impressed with the number of good boats for sale.
It was a tough decision until we found the one we bought. Horsepower
was the deciding factor. Our toy is a 1986 BAJA 190 Sunsport bowrider
    with a 260 hp V8 Mercruiser with a nice HUB float-on/drive-on trailer.
It's capable of 48-50 mph with four adults in it and gas mileage
is quite reasonable, IMO. I really enjoy the power for pulling skiers
with a couple of adults aboard. We do all our boating on lake
Winnisquam, the other lake 'Winni'. :^)

The boat is a little bigger than we were looking for, but I was
looking for an excuse to buy a newer truck anyway. :^) My 2.8 liter
V6 Blazer is adequate but bigger is better!

Hi! This is Ed Selleck (Tom's Brother) signing in for the first time
on the "Boating" file. Sure looks interesting and a lot of fun to stay
in contact with so many "Sea-Farers".

I'm the proud (and broke) owner of a 1967 37' "Wooden" Egg Harbor Sport
Fisherman called the "Mai-Kai". We keep her in Dighton, MA and run her
up and down the Narragansett Bay, Mount Hope Bay and Taunton, Sakonnet and
    Providence Rivers.

As some one mentioned in one of the other notes, there sure are plenty
of interesting coves and safe havens along these waterways.

Anyone interested in Predicted Log Racing in this area should send a
memo to Ed Selleck @AKO. It's great fun and teaches you so much
about navigation and your own boat. This will be my third year
involvement in this activity and I can't wait for the first race.
Courses (FREE) are available to those interested.

    Have a great Season!!

I've been a boater since I was 5. My passion is sailing, but I do enjoy a good
ski run! I've owned various sailboats, but never a power boat. I've spent many
years mooching off of my friends. Anyone ever taken a run on a "zip board"??

My brother lives on Lake Boone in Stow/Hudson, so we'll be doing some time there.
We do intend to trailer to other lakes/rivers in New England.

I find that notes conferences are a great source of information. I intend to
participate alot with question and comments. Thanks in advance for your advice
and wisdom.

    Hi all,

I'm Karen Levensaler and I don't own a boat. However my SO does. It
is a 1987 Baja with a 150 hp mercury on it.

We used to frequent Forge Pond in Westford/Littleton until he bought a
home in Tyngsboro on Lakeview/Lake Muscuppic (noone really knows the
name of the lake yet - if any of you do we'd love to know!).

We enjoy skiing (I'm just learning to slalom), skurfing, kneeboarding
and jumps. I say "we" but I mean "them," I'm still feeling my oats on
1 ski let alone those other toys. When I'm in the mood for a beating,
though, I will take a ride on the O'Brien tube.

Looking forward to getting lots of tips and info from this file!

Just got a great deal on a like-new blue '85 Galaxy bow-rider with
a 205 Mercruiser -- and only 72 hours. Took it out twice on the past few

I am currently looking to move up to a 36-ft Trawler-class boat. I own

I do some brokering for Larry in the evenings and during part of the

    Hi,

I've been following this conference for a few months and I finally have
the time and the initiative to sign in.

We have a Wellcraft Nova 23, its been a great first boat, no
complaints. BUT, its time to trade up! Why do I feel I'll be saying
that for the rest of my life? We do most of our boating on the Potomac
River, occaisionally the Chesapeake but its 94 miles down river. From
April to October we're out 4 or 5 times a week. We have become Boat
Junkies, any excuse to burn irreplacable fossil fuels will do.

I'll try not to be opinionated or pigheaded. However, since it is no
longer safe to discuss politics, religion, sexual preference, or potty
training, boating has become a major topic of debate. I can already
tell no one else in this conference is opinionated or stubborn, so I'll
    do my best. Please forgive.

I'm John Spencer, and while not new to boating, new in the past couple
months to this notesfile. I'm a sailor mostly (racing on a 42' tri,
cruising on many types, and currently owning a 14' spritsail skiff.) I've
owned a series of outboards, and also spent an earlier career in Outward
Bound, which included running many inboards (big, slow) and outboards
(19-22' and fast), including some "challenging" situations over a few
years in the Florida Keys.

Right now my partner and I are on the verge of buying a Limestone 24 --
not especially fast (maybe 40 mph with the 260 Mercruiser), but reknowned
for its seakeeping and best-in-class construction. (The Canadian Coast
Guard buys 'em, stock.) They're not well known, since Medeiros builds
only about 40 total per year in three models (20', 22', 24'). Assuming
we get everything settled and take delivery, I'll be glad to answer any
questions, even provide a ride.

I have been reading this notes file for about two years but until just
recently, have note replied. Now that I have opened my mouth,I thought
that it would be appropriate and considerate to introduce myself.
I really appreciate all the different topics that are discussed in
here and have learned much from the discussion.
If sometimes I seem aggrivated, that is because I am not having a
particularly good day of rehab with my ankle and miss water skiing so
    much,please excuse me.
I fractured my ankle on the 5th of September and have'nt been in the
water since, the lakes are frozen out here now and it is just as well
because I (my ankle) isn't ready for it regardless.
Our club operates on The (meaning only) city lake. There isn't much
water out here in Colorado for serious water skiers so I feel fortunate
to have Prospect. Years ago, before our club got started,Prospect was a
very poor place to ski, although the rules in place helped protect
skiers during the recreational boating hours, they were inflexible for
those of us wishing to train seriously. Because our lake is to be
    shared with the
    fishermen,canoers,paddleboaters,windsurfers,swimmers,jet-skiers,etc.
the power boaters are only allowed on the lake from sun-up till 10:00
a.m. and on Mon,Wed,Fri evenings from 6:00 till dusk.

We do have a course on the lake, which happens to be perfect for it.
the dimensions are 2000 x 1700. You can imagine how much of a zoo it is
when 10 jet-skiers and 7 boats all try to use the lake at one time.
The club gets Mon mornings for exclusive course use and on other days
we just get there real early like 5:15 and ski hot-ski alot until the
first wally shows up and starts doing circles around the lake.

Colorado is kickin butt for next year with a proposed list of 14
sactioned class C tournaments plus the regionals. Several clubs
including ours will hold non-sanctioned Handicap based slalom
tournaments through the year. Bud will bring the tour to Denver again
too. For a lack of water,we seem to be well organized, and the
    competition is tough.

    That's enough for now.

Next time you are in Colorado and want to SKI HOT-SKI ALOT, look me up
in the phone book,I hopefully will be back to skiing everyday
    faithfully in '92.

    Hi,

My name is Matt Boucher and I love to ski. After someone told me about
this conference a couple of weeks ago I have been trying to read as many
notes as possible. I own a 16' Checkmate Predictor with a 115hp Evinrude
outboard. I ski on the Merrimack usually every other morning, also
I ski on Horace Lake in Weare NH. I have a ski course that we bring
sometimes during the summer but usually after labor day.

This ski season some of my friends have picked up some great new toys.
One friend just got a 1992 Ski Sanger, what a great ski boat. We ski
on the Concord river with that in Carlisle. After one of my friends saw
it and skiied behind it he bought one too. It hasn't arrived yet but it
    should be good.

My friends and I dabble a little in barefooting which I just learned
to deepwater start longline this year.

Well I just wanted to introduce myself, oh by the way, I work for a
company called OS TECHnologies, we are contracted to do conferencing
for Digital. I personally am responsible for the Macintosh Client
    Version of Conferencing.

Hello all ... I've been an avid skier for quite some time and started
skiing 33 years ago. I just started reading this conference and have
gained a lot of useful information. It seems as though several of the
topics have had little activity recently but the information was still
enjoyable.

I've been skiing behind a 33 year old 16' catamaran with twin 75 horse
mercs (third set of motors, we keep wearing them out). Lots of power
out of the hole, good top end, and no, I said no, wake. For slalom
skiing, long line, you can't beat it. However, as of last weekend I am
now the proud owner of a '93' Malibu Echelon LX, 20' with a 350ci merCruiser
Magnum. Seems to have the same pulling power, little slower top end,
bigger wake but better short line abilities and more room in the boat.
Purchased it with a boom because I have been unsuccessful at trying to
step off a ski and would really like to bare foot before my age exceeds
my footin speed (I might point out though that Banana George didn't start
skiing until he was 40). I guess that means I still have a chance.

I ski the lakes in southern Missouri/northern Arkansas. I'm going to be
installing a slalom course this year (built over the winter) and will
be attending BareFoot International for a week starting May 17th (I have
to do something to keep ahead of my wife).

I've particularly enjoyed the notes on footin and building a slalom
course. Hope to add some entries of my own as time goes on.

/Steve

Good Day,, That is any day out boating is a good day!

I am currently running the family around in a 19.5 Charger w/ big block
and a Berkley pump. It works great for drowning kids on hot days. We
do most of our boating on the Colorado River in and around the Lake
Havasu area but, there are also 7 or so lakes within 2 hours for quick
day or after work evening ski runs.

The ski season out here in California is usually from February to
    October.

BK (before kids) I use to run around in a 2 seater flatty doing 120+
I had that need for speed but had to balance it with my income, I guess
    life is full of compromise.

Next boat, two to three years out, will probally be a 21 - 23 foot
V drive with a 671 blower. I'll have all the room I need for the kids,
thier friends, and ... and still have the power when needed to have
    some serious fun.

Happy boating to all, Chris Callen

I'm now the owner of a 15' Duantless BW with a 60hp Johnson Tracker.
Always wanted a Whaler as my Dad's has lasted him for years.

I checked for used ones, but they're either rats or they are sold the
minute they are on the market.

Anyway, I also liked a Canadian boat called a BMV? with it's center
console but I have never seen them down here. I was jut purusing
the dealer when I saw this Duantless; just what I wanted and hopefully
if will live up to my expectations.

    Greetings fellow Wet-heads!

My name is Theo Bellamy, and I am a worker bee in Multivendor
Customer Services (remember Field Service?). On July 8th my wife
and I celebrated 15 years of wedded bliss by purchasing a 1988
Sea Ray 268-DA Sundancer (7.4L Merc, A/C, etc ...). We keep it
on Lake Wylie in South Carolina. I hope to learn from reading
Boat Notes as we are relative novices.

My name is Dave Pottinger. I live in Tucson, AZ. We have a 29'
Chaparral Signature with twin 4.3L Volvo Duo-props. We absolutely love
it. We keep the boat in a slip on Lake Pleasant (just northwest of
Phoenix). Also, we trailer it to all the Colorado River lakes,
especially Lake Powell. We are very active in the USCG Aux. We tow
the boat with a 1 ton GMC dually. Being in Arizona, we boat all year
round. Last year I think we missed only 6 weekends on the boat.

    I own a 1965 14.5' Starcraft Runabout with a 40hp Big Twin Evinrude.
Bought it at the end of May from a former DECie who moved up to a
bigger boat. Its a great boat for 2 adults, but it is really small for
my family of 4 plus gear. So, we are on the water (the goal at the
time), and we are now looking to move up to about an 18 to 19' bowrider
as soon as a "deal" comes along.

I have taken her out to Lake Whitehall in Hopkinton MA for fishing and
Webster Lake for recreation. I plan to primarily use the boat for
family recreation on Wallom (sp?) Lake in Douglas. Wallom is about 6
miles east of Webster Lake. I also plan to take her out onto
Mattapoisett Harbor a few times which is where the in-laws live.

To Chris Callen on Havasu, one of my best friends has his Bayliner out
there, its all he talks about is Havasu and Copper Canyon. I think he
has a 21' Bayliner with a 4.3 I/O. Keeps wanting me to fly out there
and spend some time on the lake. Real tempting, but my wife will not
be too pleased if I do that.

Grew up in the Southern Nova Scotia area - lots of salt water bays
and islands. Been going back once/twice a year for more years then
I'd admit to. Can remember seeing 300-500 pound Tuna sunning on top
of the water and the International Tuna Tournament out of Wedgeport NS.

Just bought a 16 ft Aluminum with a 50hp Mercury stripped her down to
the floor boards(replacing floor end of season),removed old wiring and
refit her with new wiring..actually had to use existing "stuff" from the
garage(removed air horns from a Gold Wing motorcycle).

Purchased a Toyata Previa for the tow and amd heading for St John's
NB tomorrow at 0400 dark hours onto the ferry and then south to
     Yarmouth.

Anybody interested I'll do a trip report on the Previa hall
capabilities and the fishing results..expect to "see" Tuna,Mackeral,
stripers and blues (what the hell there always dog fish if nothings
    else is around).

Hi,

I work in Maynard, MA at the Mill and live in Hudson, MA. I have a
1990 Chaparral 2350 with a 230 h.p. Mercruiser. I spend my summers on
Sebago Lake in Maine and rent a slip on the lake so I can drive up to
Maine and jump in and go whenever I like. I have been boating on
Sebago for years and find it to be a beautiful and relaxing escape from
April to October every year. Too bad the season wasn't longer in
New England.

Vicky

P.S. I still haven't found the right name for my boat. Any ideas?

Dirk Friedrich here. Recently purchased a 25' Chris Craft Lancor
Corsair which I am modifying for use as a weekender-plus. Have been
boat-less for two years after selling the last wooden boat ever to be
owned by me (life is too short to be replacing spongecake transoms).
Mooring location is up in the air right now, normally keep a boat at my
folks place in a tidal flat off of Narragansett Bay, but this boat would
look undignified laying on its side at low tide. Hoping to be in the water
for '94, will be looking for all sorts of input along the way...

	Dick,
Hope your 25' Chris Craft Lancor Corsair does well by
you this upcoming season. I'm looking for new places to launch
the FishTeaser but don't like testing new "grounds" without
someone showing me the "avoid this hidden rock stuff" ;^)

I'll be doing my 3rd fishing season comin up and would like to
try the Bay as it may be an easier drive for me then going to
the Merrimack River, Newburyport or Allen Harbour, Harwichport (Cape)
driving from Oxford (south of Worcester)

I'll be asking in the file for those who can show me the Bay's
do's and dont's. Think ya may be able ta help me out this summer?

    Two Boat Owner

Being a two boat owner I'm naturally anxious to sell one of them --
which is a 1967 37' Egg Harbor. Hull is wooden with fiberglass decks
and cabin sides. Sleeps 7 comfortably - has radar, VHF Radio,
Recording Depth Sounder, Stand-up head with shower, LP Gas stove with
oven, freezer, refrigerator and pressurized hot and cold running water.

454 Crusader Engines are 5 years old and in excellent shape.

New transom six years ago. Looks beautiful!

She is very comfortable and needs someone who will care for her.

    Will sacrifice at $21,500.

Hi chaps (== Ladies and Gentlemen)

I'm working for Digital in their Bern, Switzerland office (with the
wife). We're both working on PTT projects using RDB / Decforms / ACMS
Client server stuff. Enough of work...

We live in the West of Switzerland in an area called "See-land".
There are 3 lakes interconnected by canals. The lakes are 26 miles
(Neuchatel), 10 miles (Biel) and 5.5 miles (Murten) long. Our village
lies on the canal between lakes Neuchatel and Biel.

We have been "caravaners" for the last 10 years but now due to the
change in circumstances (proximity to water + the kids have school
every Saturday morning which makes weekends away impossible) we are
keen to swap to boating. Sailing looks fun but power-boats/ cruisers
look to be more flexible in terms of where you can go etc.

I think I'll put a new not in before I end up asking for advice in
this one. Anyway, I'm looking forward to reading this conference and
getting some advice for you experienced boaters (is that the correct
    term??).

Might as well check in, now that I have one, almost anyway.

Next week I pick up a '94 Proline 192 TC, which translates
    to a 18'6" dual console. I've got a 135hp Mariner on it.

I've been reading this notesfile for quite a few years, gleaning
as much knowledge as possible. I think I ended up with a great

Now to come up with a name for it...

Hello, my name is jack and I am new to digital
I would like to let you all know a little about my self.
I am currently certified (MERCRUISER/MERCURY OUTBOARD, OMC OUTBOARD/OMC COBRA).
I have almost five years in the profession.
I love to talk boats and hope I can answer questions in the future.
I also own my own boat---1987 21' COBALT bow rider 250 hrs. 260 mcr.

P.S. Remember what time of year it is? Its time to wintrize and shrink wrap
your boats. It pays to have this done properly so you can have many years of
reliable boating.

Mark Clement @ MRO. I'm back into boating!

    Just picked up a 1985 16' Thundercraft bowrider with a 1978/79 Johnson
Stinger 75hp longshaft OB this past weekend. The boat and engine are mint
    with very low hours.

I do most of my boating at Wallum Lake in Douglas MA.

    Past boats all bought from DECies and sold to DECies;

1965 14' Starcraft Runabout with an Evinrude Big Twin 40 hp OB.
    Fun first boat, easily towed.

1978 19' Glastron Bowrider with a V6 175 hp Blackmax Merc OB. This
boat was originally owned by John Havlacheck (sp?) and was called
"Jump Shot". Very fast boat! Towing was a little painful; managed
to tear part of the frame off my 1980 Olds Delta 88!
