603.0. "COBIA VS. RINKER?" by AIMHI::SJOHNSON () Tue Feb 06 1990 16:38

    My Parents are considering buying a boat - they are very strongly
    considering the Cobia 22' San Marino (?) but have heard great things
    about the Rinker 236 sport version. Does anyone have any positive
    or negative feedback on either boat. It could be very helpful in
    making their decision.

    Thanks in advance.
    Sonia

    - They have only read about the Rinker as it was not at the Boston
    Boat Show & the only local dealer is in Billerica MA.

    They are looking for a boat that they can use on a Lake primarily
    and on the Maine coast about 3-4 times a year. They want a cuddy
    that you could sleep on if necessary and a motor that will pull
    a barefooter up (approx 50 mph) without hesitation.

    Thanks again.

       Somehow a 22 footer w/cuddy doesn't seem to equate to 50mph??

                             Maybe!!!

    Re .1>
    	I agree, 50mph might be attainable but its probably the top end
    in a family type 22' cuddy. My 22' Aquasport cuddy has a 200hp outboard
    on it and it tops out at about 42 mph (and BTW it blows by most others
    in this class).
    	The boat is rated for a max of 225 hp which might get it a few more
    mph's. Its also a deep V which does cost some at the top end; maybe a
    modified V could do it a little easier, but at a cost of rough water
    boogying of course.
    	As far a pulling skiers, I don't do it myself but I don't think there
    would be any problem, it has plenty of low end power.
    Hope this helps,
    Paul

603.3You don't need 50 mph to barefootNRADM1::WILSONMoe, Larry, Cheese!Fri Feb 09 1990 12:0816

    A 22' cuddy that'll do 50mph is certainly possible, but it depends
    on the hull design and the motor. I know a guy who has a 23'
    Checkmate that is technically a cuddy because it has v-berths and
    a lockable door. It has a Mercruiser 454 (330 hp) and will do
    over 50 mph with ease.

    On the other hand, a 22' cuddy with full stand up cabin, enclosed
    head, mid-cabin, etc. would be doing well to hit 35 mph with the
    standard 175-200 hp engine. With the 260 hp V-8 it will probably
    reach low 40's. 50 mph is generally out of the question because
    you don't see many of these boats with the 454. And besides, at
    that speed you might break the crystal glassware that you see on
    the cabin tables at the boat show! 8^)

603.4Thanks!AIMHI::SJOHNSONFri Feb 09 1990 12:2810
    Both boats weigh 3200 (Rinker) & 3500 (Cobia) lbs. as is. The Cobia
    has a 5.7 liter V8 (265 hp?) w/ speed estimated at 50 or 53 MPH w/ speed
    prop and the Rinker has an optional 454 Chevy at estimated 65 MPH speed.
    Unfortunately in the winter you can't test drive these boats to see if
    their estimations are accurate. If anyone should know otherwise about
    these boats - please let me know. Also, just FYI - the V isn't as deep
    as some 22/23' boats. Thanks again!

    Good feedback - I appreciate it!

603.5How fast?AIMHI::SJOHNSONFri Feb 09 1990 12:499
    In ref to note 603.3 - how fast do you go barefooting at? I start my
    husband at 45 mph and drop down to 38 mph when he's up. That is why we
    figured a 50 mph boat (w/ people, gas & supplies) would be the minimum
    speed required. We have a 20' Checkmate that goes 62 mph (w/ 2 people)
    that we use for water activities in NH - but my Parents want to
    purchase a boat for their lake in ME for use to use.

    Thanks again.

    You may want to pick up the latest issue of MotorBoat magazine
    (March/April). This issue has reviews of both the Cobia San Marino 225
    ESC and the Rinker 236 Sport.

    Depending on how much money you really want to spend, maybe I could make
    a suggestion to look into a BAJA 235 DVX, alias the 235 Force model.
    It's got tons of cabin room, ski's well, can be purchased with a 454
    Magnum and will do a good 56-60mph. One of my friends bought one last
    year and loves it. The boat is also decked out very well and can easily
    be used to sleep on.

    Thanks everyone for all the info. They are still in the deciding
    state. The Billerica Rinker Dealer has been calling to set up time to
    view the boat w/out the shrinkwrap so I'm sure that will help the
    decision making.

    Thanks again,
    Sonia

	I looked at the two boats in Motorboat Magazine and I see that
    they are indeed capable of 50mph+. When thinking of a cuddy with sleeping
    capability what came to mind was a different style of boat, hence my
    earlier reply.
	These boats aren't "my cup of tea" as it were but I must admit I
    was impressed. The 454Magnum on the Rinker cranked out 360hp at the prop
    which pushed it over 60mph. It also was wound up to 5300 rpm at WOT turning
    a 23" screw. That's pretty high for a 4 stroke, which means of course that
    the boat is far from underpowered. The Cobia which was powered by a 5.7
    litre hit close to 50. I imagine that with the optional 454 it too would
    be in the 60 mph range.
	An interesting point for me was the fact that they both had 20 degree
    deadrise. This is pretty deep which means they could do well in the salt
    or in choppy conditions as well, at moderate speeds of course.
	Like I said, they're not for me...fish guts and carpeting don't
    go together real well...but they seem to be both excellent boats. I didn't
    read the whole articles...just looked at the specs...but I kind of liked
    the Cobia better. It seemed to be more money but also a little more quality
    ...Just my impression.

    Paul

    Sonia, just a word to let you know that the Rinker voat company has
    been around for many, many years and the billerica Rinker Dealer has
    been selling them for quite a while.

    Good luck,

    The Rinker Dealer called again last night to let us know that they were
    able to get a spot at the Bayside Expo Show next weekend. Unfortunately
    I think we're going to the NH boat show that weekend! If we do, if
    anyone should actually see it - please let me know your opinions on it.

    Thanks again,

603.12Bayside Show is two weekendsRDF::GUNNERSONWed Feb 14 1990 14:485
According to the list of boat shows in the 1990 Boat Show note the show at the
Bayside is going to be there for two weekends, the 17/18 and the 24/25 so maybe
you can go to the Bayside this weekend if you are going to the N.H. show next.

603.13Guess What?AIMHI::SJOHNSONWed Jun 06 1990 13:387
    Well, my Parents ended up getting what they wanted - a 17' Stingray w/
    open bow. It's a nice boat, but now we want to trade our Checkmate
    once again for 23'-24' boat. We're looking at the 236 Rinker as well
    as the 235 BAJA. Any suggestions?

    Thanks,
    Sonia
603.14No question - GO BAJA!ASPEN2::BOIKOHeaven..No,it's Iowa/Field Of DreamsWed Jun 06 1990 13:4611
    re .13

    If it comes down to a 236 Rinker or 235 BAJA - there is no contest.

    Go BAJA - good resale, performance, well built, great reputation, good
              price.

    Call Stewert Brown - Browns Auto & Marine Newport NH, tell him Mike
    Boiko sent you. He'll go out of his way for you.

Not according to Powerboat Reports! They didn't think much of Cobia
in an owner's report they did last year. I'll dig up the issue and
post a few excerpts if you're interested...

    FWIW- My neighbor has a Cobia runabout, snapped a mooring line during a
    storm and was pounded on the rocks pretty good. One spot was ground
    thru, the glass was thick and tough. he was able to patch the hull and
    still uses the boat. Of course the boat is VERY heavy.
