    I still use the Micron-33 for the hull and a spray can flat black
    for the outdrive (Mercruiser). Don't remember the brand but I should
    be seriously looking this week. Let you know what I find.

    Did anyone have luck locating any Micron - 33?
    
    Micron - 33 was one of the only paints that came in white and
    I have not been able to locate any other brand. I think MICRON -
    CSC is a replacement ... but doubt that a similar "white" would
    be available ( ...hard to get a white from copper base).
    
    What are folks doing for the outdrive now that the Interlux 
    spray can of flat black is not available?

    I the  Micron CSC would be used for the BOTTOM paint
    not the outdrive (unless someone wants to throw away $$$.
    
    This note started out as I/O paints and digressed, maybe my
    fault for asking the question (following the discussion in .2)
    about MICRON - 33. (I've never used that for I/O paint)
    
    AGAIN for others ... MICRON - CSC in NOT for I/O's!

    P.S. Is the "shark white" MICRON - CSC an "off white" or a

Well ........its been about a month now and still no responses from
    the sailors (notesfile) about my questions concerning the bottom paint 
    to be used on an aluminum boat. This particular note is probably
    the most appropriate place to ask since we're on the topic of bottom
    paint for ALUMINUM.........

    Haven't given bottom paint much thought. All I know is it prevents
    growth on the hull and you should(must) use bottom paint if you're
    boat will be in the salt water all the time. My hull will be bottom
    painted by the dealer as part of the contract. I'll need to think
    more about re-coating next season.
    
    My question concerns the use of bottom paint on an aluminum boat
    which I'll be using as my dinghy. Isn't the paint for Alum. the
    stuff that was banned recently...and you really shouldn't use this
    type of paint UNLESS you are using it on alum..? I hear that this
    type of paint (the stuff that was banned for use or unavailable)
    is/was the most affective as compared to what is now generally
    available. Can someone shed a little light on this.?
    
    Can the consumer get this TIN paint in MAss.? How does a dealer know
    if you're really gonna use it on Alum.

     I just founf a source for Interlux outdrive paint that is Tin Based.
    Comes in a spray can and is available in white or black.
    
     Sorry I don't have the phone no- but the source is Defender Industries
    in New Rochelle, N.Y. They have no other tin based paint available, but
    no problem with the interlux.
    
     They take Mastercard or Visa. They have a min. order- I think its $15
    0r $20.
    
     These folks have the best prices of any of the catalog supply houses.
    M&E, E&B, West Marine, Overton's, Fisherman's Paradise,Jamestown
    supply,Goldberg's etc. Their catalog is very extensive - but"No frills"
    
    
     

    Have you recieved the paint from them yet? I placed an order for
    a different tin base paint, they took the order, but didn't ship
    the paint. As far as I can tell no one has a tin based outdrive
    paint approved by the EPA for this season.

    Please keep us posted on the aquisition of TIN BASED PAINT for outdrives
    and aluminum hulls. I'm still looking to paint my Alum. tender.

    I just sanded my outdrive (to get off the weeds, barnacle, etc.)
    in anticipation of painting it. Had I known what I just found out
    today (no outdrive paint available?) I would have left it alone,
    and at least would have had all of what was still left on it from
    last year!
    
    This is a real fix - I guess I'll be jumping over the side every
    two weeks to scrape off the weeds, etc. I'm anxious to find an
    available source of some kind of paint! I will give the place in
    N. Y. a call (mentioned in a previus note), but will be glad
    to hear of any local sources of some kind of alternative.

    I just called Defender, the Tri-Lux outdrive paint is no longer
    available. 
    Re -1	You should be able to find all kinds of standard outdrive
    paint around for the areas you sanded to bare metal, as long as
    you prime it first.
    
    For people that can wait, Boat-US is expecting to have Classic Yacht
    outdrive paint in stock by late May. I wouldn't bet on it.
    
    

    
    	I don't know if this will work for everybody, but did any one
    ever of using automotive aluminium primer and paint. I have a friend
    in the autobody trade and a couple years ago told me that I could
    refinish my lower casing on my outboard by sanding,applying a sealer
    primer (aluminium) and than paint it with aluminium paint same paint
    available for cars with aluminium body. The finish has lasted as
    good if not better than expected but I don't use my boat in salt
    water, so I am not sure on how well it would wear out there.

    Thanks for the suggestion, but I need anti-fouling paint like
    inter-lux. I moor the boat in salt water, so I need something to
    keep the weeds and barnacles off!

    HERE'S A SUGGESTION THAT WILL WORK (ACCORDING TO MY MARINA)
    IN ORDER TO USE A ANTI-FOULING PAINT ON AN I/O TODAY, YOU
    HAVE TO SEAL THE LOWER UNIT WITH EPOXY RESIN THEN APPLY 
    ANTI-FOULING PAINT. THE GOOD STUFF AIN'T AVAILABLE ANYMORE.

    What is the situation if someone has used copper-based anti-fouling
    paint on their outdrive, assuming they are diligent in the checking
    and replacement of their zincs?
    
    Is there some other effect on the aluminium apart from the usual
    electrolysis?

    I just pulled my boat out of the water. I've got a good amount of
    growth on the outdrive (barnicles and generic brown slime).  My 
    questions are:
    
    	What is the best way to clean this stuff off?  Bristle brush, wire
    	brush, sand paper?
    
    	Should I spray some oil on the outdrive for the winter (the
        boat is stored outside down the Cape)?  Cover the outdrive?
    
    	I'd like to save any painting for next Spring.  When I do paint,
        what are the correct steps (ie. sand, prime, paint)?

    Interlux has annouced a new tin based paint for outdrives and
    aluminum boats. It is called Tri-Lux IIT. It is an acrylic polymer
    with tin that has a release rate of less than 4 micrograms per
    cm squared. This replaces Micron-33 and Tri-Lux.

     I've heard that thie TRI-LUXII is available, but is not available to
    the general public- only to boat delers/yards and manufacturers. The
    only place I was able to find it was at Jamestown supply- they would

greater than 80' long and must be applied by a boatyard (hey, if you can 
afford a boat that big, you can afford to have someone else paint the 
bottom).

    that can be done now (before launch) or during the season to minimize
    the growth of barnicles on the outdrive?

    Boat US has a clear tin spray by Classic Yacht. Baert Marine in
    Seabrook NH also carries it, in stock. I also recieved a gallon
    of Tri-Lux IIT from Defender last month. The may not know of the
    requirements.

    I ALSO heard that the tin-based paints are only acceptable for use
    on steel hulls greater than ~80-85 feet in length...

    ...but Pettit Alumaguard CAN be applied by a qualified (licenced)
    boat yard. 
    
    According to the Pettit Rep. at the boat show, the tin-based
    paint can't be had by the consumer at all anymore. Beginning March 1st,
    the state requires the boat yards who wish to use this paint (for
    aluminum boats I assume) to be licenced. What this licencing is
    all about...I don't know. Perhaps it's the states way of keeping
    track of who is using the tin-based paints.
    
    Some people will state that a copper-based paint is acceptable for
    use on an aluminum boat as long as the hull is primed properly (etched)
    followed by the application of 2 barrier coats of what is commonly refered
    to as a vinyl undercoater. Don't do it! One scratch on the hull
    and the copper begins to do its work. One only knows how long the
    boat will last after this occurs....

    Is there any new data/products available for outdrives? I have noticed
    another brand (other than the spray clear) appearing in catalogs.
    
    Also, does the stark white primer have to be used or can I get the
    color of the outdrive looking more like OMC's off-white before I spray
    the clear coat finish?

Last year an unnamed Falmouth brokerage house was responsible for
bottom painting my boat (part of the deal to buy it).  Anyway, the
sterndrive anti-fouling paint didn't do much good.  And the
sterndrives are moderately covered in barnacles.

In the past, I've been good about bottom painting so, I don't have any
experience here.  I have a number of questions, for which I'd be
grateful to have answers:

- how do I get off the barnacles that got attached.  Wire brush?

- The ones that have come off leave behind a small disk.  How do I get
that off?  Sand paper?

- the paint that is on there is a flat black paint.  Can I paint over
it?  It will be difficult/impossible to remove.  I have 2 mercruiser
alpha stern drives.

- What kind of paint should I use?  I thought there was basically 1
type of stern drive bottom paint.  On my trip to West Marine, I was
faced with many possibilities.

Thanks for any help.  (BTW, I'll be away for a little while so please
don't interpret my silence as indifference.)

    I use a plastic bondo spreader to scrape off the barnacles. 
    Fingers/rubber glove for those hard to reach areas.
    Lightly sand the white marks, wipe down with a cleaner before painting.
    As for paint, none of them work where I moor my boat, they help a
    little. I've tried them all.
    I won't use the Tri-lux paint again. It goes on too thick and wears
    away leaving blocks of paint, looks like cracks. I think it has to do
    with electrolysis.
    The clear Tempo goes on better and doesn't build up as fast over the
    years.
    I've always wanted to try a teflon based paint, maybe I'll try a
    section this year.
