172.0. "Theme parties" by USAT02::NOORDIJK (Spare us Bureaucracy) Fri Jan 07 1994 18:41

This note should be used to brainstorm or just explain ideas
        around parties with a theme.

Some friends of mine are throwing a "Wizard of Oz" party and
we're coming up with ideas for costumes, decorations & food.

We'll have the yellow brick road, probably in yellow poster
        board... a rainbow in styrofoam...
I'm checking out books from the library so I can draw some
        posters.
The costumes are obvious... and varied. My brother wants to
be a Munchkin so he can inhale helium all evening.

For food we'll probably go with the "little" theme, and of
course include Munchkins from Dunkin Donuts.

We're tossing some other ideas around and any input would
        be much welcome!!

A while back, we used to do theme parties. A favorite theme was
'games' - Each round consisted of a game. Like pick up sticks,
or one round of trivial persuit, one hand of draw poker, etc.
Each round had a winner, and a prize was awarded. It was great fun, and
everybody won something! There was even an award for who didn't win
any rounds. Each round also consisted of one hors d'oeuvre, and one
drink. You had to progress through all the rounds to partake of
all the goodies - great fun.

A few years ago, a friend of mine had a rather interesting theme to a
    halloween party.

    The theme was:

"I went out last night and got drunk, then got "lucky". And THIS is what
    I rolled over to."

You had to dress up as the WORST possible thing that the opposite sex
could roll over to. We had some "interesting" costumes. Including a
    hillbilly, a nun, and a 15 year old. (-:

I went to a nerd party... Which I won first prize at. (Maybe that's
    telling me something... :> )

I've also been to a snob party.

    Now John, I wouldn't call you a nerd! :v)

    Good parties folks!
For the OZ party, I thought I might come as a poppy. Dress all in
green and have my face sticking out of a big red flower. I really
don't have any costume type clothing.

A friend of mine throws a "Kentucky Derby" Party every year...once
everybody has arrived they auction off the horses to run in the
race...mint julips are served all day along with a wonderful dinner
that everyone does potluck style...and then when the race is run
everyone huddles with their fellow owners cheering their own
horse...the "owner" of the first place horse collect 60% of the money
from the auction, the second place collects 25% and the third place
collects 15%. We find it better than Super Bowl Parties since you
don't have to wait four hours to find out the outcome!

And then there is always the Calgary Stampede Breakfast that lasts all
day. Everyone comes in their best cowboy and rodeo attire and the day
starts off with a HUGE (and I mean HUGE) pancake breakfast at about
    11AM.
