78.0. "MOM NEEDS ADVICE!" by JULIET::UCCI_SA (You were better as a fantasy) Wed Aug 12 1992 23:20

    Advice needed!

My only son joined the Navy in Feb 1991. I just received notification
from the Navy that he has been on unauthorized absence (AWOL) for over
30 days and is being listed as a deserter and his file has been given
to the National Crime Information Center.

I talked with my son last on June 22nd. It was the usual type of
conversation. He said he was working and had leave for the weekend.
He was stationed in Bremerton, Washington. According to the Navy, he
skipped out on the 23rd of June.

Can anyone tell me what happens next, and what's a mother to do?

My son hasn't contacted me or any of his relatives or friends in our
neighborhood. Do you think he might have gone to Canada?

Any advice or words of wisdom would be appreciated.

    Sandie,

I was a yoeman in the Navy for a bit... and have processed such cases.

First of all, he's going to go to a court martial, it will go easier on
him if he turns himself in. If he doesn't... he's libel to end up
doing brig time. At best, he'll be fined, restricted to base, and then
continue his tour. At worst... he'll be fined, placed in the brig,
then discharged with a Bad Conduct Discharge.

If you talk to him in the future, encourage him to turn himself in.
Usually they offer him the opportunity to get out of the Navy if he so
chooses... (usually a Bad Conduct Discharge). Or the opportunity to
serve some minor restriction time, a light fine, and then be
    reassigned.

What to do? I can't tell you that... I can offer the suggestion that
you enform him that in 10 years experience, I've not seen anyone NOT
get caught, although one that was had been gone for 3 years.

He'll be running for the rest of his life, he won't be able to visit
you at home ever again. He has to be prepared to not only leave the
U.S. but face up to the fact that the longer he is gone, the worse his
offense becomes and the more sever the punishment will be. If for any
reason he wants to return, he will wanted for desertion.

Find the girl, that is the usual reason if they do not go home.

And most Sailors are interested in a girl or two, (having served
12 years, I can attest to that.) the usual reason is a girl.

Follow what Skip said, that is the only thing. Too bad the young
kids get their heads on backwards.

Good luck and I ditto all of the prior advise.
