62.0. "Beaches ..." by ASIMOV::DITOMMASO (I cant get use to this lifestyle) Thu Jun 18 1992 21:25

Considering its beach time ... I figured we could use a note that
  talks about beaches ...

Who's going where, when and why!
Whats your favorite beach ... and why ..
Whats your favorite beach activity ...
Are you a "towel" person, "blanket" person or "chair" person ...

and so on .. and so on ...

Oh yea, this is a good place to put directions to beaches too!

    beach baby! :)

my fave beach is good harbour beach in gloucester (tho lots of people
have discovered it in the past 8 years or so... :( ) it's getting
crowded... it has an island with wild roses and blueberries (and
poison ivy) that you can walk to across the sandbar at low tide...
also has a small river at the other end thats fun to swim in...

i'm going up to wiers beach this weekend! (tho i doubt i'll hit the
    sand ;)

went to crow's hill beach in leominster state park? this past
weekend... it was ok, not much room to swim, definately a family
park, not many great views ;) 'cept lots of trees... and just
about every family there had a grill going... i was drooling 5 minutes
after i got there! it was a riot when the ice cream truck came...
all you could hear was "mommy, money!" and the beach cleared of
children in about 2 minutes flat!

i'm with annie, my fave activity is to baske lazily in the sun and take
    in the views!

62.4Gay Head ...ASIMOV::DITOMMASOI cant get use to this lifestyleThu Jun 18 1992 21:3741
  OK, .. I'll start ...

Well, I've been to many beaches in my life, .. and though many are great
(like Aruba ... ) and many are big dissapointments (like the French riveria)
... The best is definetly Martha's Vinyards own Gay Head beach!

   Picture this:

300 foot high clay cliffs, starting in a deep red at the base of the
cliffs, running through every color of the rainbow as you look up the
cliffs. Behind you, about 50 feet away is the ocean, who's waves can
be fairly calm, but usually are outrageous ... strong enough to throw
even the biggest of men ... along this beach, which runs for miles are
people having a great time, ... kids, adults ... older people, some who
have swam to shore from the dozens of power boats parked about 50 feet
out, all enjoying an off shore party ...
As you walk along the beach, you see that animals are not restricted,
you can bring your pets for an enjoyable day at the beach, and let them
roam ... Coolers are NOT restricted, .. you can enjoy a beer or two or
three ... in plain sight of the police, .. clothes are not restricted ...
As you walk down past the volleyball net, which is there for the public ..
volleyball provided ... you notice more and more people wearing what they
please, .. wether it be bikini, thong topless or nothing at all, .. all
having a great time mixed together, respecting each others rights to wear
what they please (its very mixed) ... some even wear seaweed and paint
themselves with clay! (playing in the clay pools has been a favorite
  pastime of many!)

This beach is definetly great, with many people, but NOT overcrowded, ...
younger people tend to be the beaches most popular inhabitants ...
.. other inhabitants .. artists, .. jugglers, .. tourists ... and so on!

All in all, my favorite beach! (though I haven't been to Lucy Vincent yet!)

  ...

(Hmmm, did I say that I have a house that sleeps 11 for a week in July
   on the vinyard! ...)

62.12SNOC02::CASEYGreetings from Melbourne, OzThu Jun 18 1992 23:4424
We have many lovely open ocean beaches here. Around the perimeter of
Port Phillip Bay are many quiet beaches which are real safe for
children. A couple of them are nudist beaches and one has to be careful
of that.. since one's binoculars tend to mist up on a really hot day.

The surf beaches which open onto the Victorian coastline though are
somewhat legendary. These include Bell's Beach, which is where the
World Surfing Titles are held each year, and other fabulous beaches
such as Lorne, Anglesea, Torquay, Ocean Grove, Point Leo and many, many
more. I think my favourite is Jan Juc.

Our surf beaches are unspoiled places of lovely white sand with great
    waves running toward the shore.

/Jen mentioned Bondi Beach in Sydney which is OK as City type beaches
go, but for me, it's the open wilderness beach like here where I can
set off on my own to conquer the wild surf. And at night, there's the
traditional surf club barbecue to finish off the day properly.

Our local beach is Chelsea Beach which is about 5 minutes away ..it's
nice as city type beaches go too.

    Best beach? Bradley Beach, NJ.

    Directions to the beach...

    leave my house
    walk 1 block

    THERE'S THE BEACH!

Best place to hang tho is actually about 3 blocks down - as that's the
"surfing beach" - Major Babe Action, and generally much cooler people
than the section on by block, which is more families.

Best beaches in the UK got to be the North coast of Devon/Cornwall.
Around Padstow (NCOR) there some beautiful sandy bays where yoy can get
a cove to yourself(exellent if you with a "friend"!?)
Croyde in north Devon got the best surf I've seen and surfed, but for
convienence from Reading Lulworth cove in Dorset can"t be beat. The
coves shaped like a horse shoe so the waters warm and protected (take
your face mask its worth doing some free diving when youe there).
Theres also a camp site on top of the hill between Lulworth cove and
Dodaldore(sp?) which is handy if not a bit "family/touresty"

Best Beach = High Meadow Beach in Truro, Mass

Several friends and I spent a week in P-town last year and
got tired of Race Point Beach so we headed east on the Cape
and located High Meadow. Beautiful sandy beach with great
sand dune cliffs all around it. Nice and isolated too, not
many people and they were all adults.

Hmm, If the one you are talking about is anything like the one
in North Truro ... I have to agree with you ... that was a gorgeous
beach! Not crowded at all either!

Very clean also ... nice sand ... nice waves ... great for a quiet
  day at the beach!

Myrtle Beach, SC is great. Can't wait for my vacation there next
    month!

There's a small island near Tallahassee FL, called St. Georges ...
It's wonderful! The island is about 29 mi long and less than a mile
wide, so the whole thing is a white sandy beach. There are places
to stay and eat, but it's not a touristy strip. In fact, it's pretty
much undiscovered. Don't tell too many folks! :v)

62.18Yup, I can be a beach bum!! SNOC01::GALLAGHERMIn love with life!Wed Jun 24 1992 08:4814

I live 5 minutes walk from the beach, Maroubra Beach in Sydney. It's a
good beach although can be a little dangerous at times and yes folks,
the shark alarm does go off occasionally but nobody has been eaten by
    one yet!! :^)

If you want privacy and less crowds yu go to one end of the beach and
if you want to see all the action you go to the middle. It really
depends whether you want to wear your full bikini when sunbathing!! ;^)

It's a little cold for swimming now since it's winter here, but the
days are sunny and it's still nice to go and walk along.

There are a number of beaches on the North and South Carolinas coast.
Myrtle Beach is by far the most "famous" (Anybody know how to Shag?)
I'm looking at a real estate brochure for Holden Beach (SC) right
now...makes me DROOL for the ocean!!

    Favorite beaches...

Gay Head at Martha's Vineyard, I cant beleive it is Massachusetts, what
    a gorgious beach.

Race Point Beach, Provincetown MA (Cape Cod)
Coast Guard Beach, Eastham MA (Cape Cod)
Nauset Beach, Eastham MA (Cape Cod)

An old favorite is Nantasket Beach in Hull MA

You cant beat the Massachusetts beaches, especially the National
Seashore down the Cape which is undisturbed beaches, in their natural
state. It starts from Eastham and ends at Provincetown.
