128.0. "International assistanced needed." by CCAD23::TAN (FY94-Prepare for Saucer Separation) Sun Jun 27 1993 05:49

    Well peoples,

I've been posting similar notes in conferences across the net,
    hoping for some help.

2 weeks ago, I had a very distressing dream about a friend I had
as a student, 13 years ago. I've not seen or heard from him
since his return to Nepal in the late '70s, early '80s.

Over the last 2 weeks, I've not been able to shake the dream
from my mind, and yesterday, I finally decided to phone my
sister (in England) and tell her about it. SHE had had the
same feelings of dread about him, starting that same day.

So now, I've decided to try and track him down. Trouble is,
    I don't know where/how to start. I called International
Directories, but the operator's said that she can't locate a
phone number based on just a name and country. (Fair enough
I suppose, even if there aren't many phones in Nepal).

There also doesn't appear to be a Nepalese embassy/consulate
in New Zealand that I can contact. The only info I have is
that he was (is) working for an American bank, in Nepal.

Can anyone suggest anything that might help?

    cheers,
    joyce

How about obtaining a list of American banks (ie, their Head Offices) in
Napel and contacting each one individualy ?

Can't be that many of 'em!

Hi,

tried what you suggested and called a travel agents today, to ask what banks
were out there. They've supplied me with a list of *3* (actually, I didn't
think they'd have more than 1!) So far, all three have turned out to be
British owned. But I'll keep trying.

There's an international news agency that's going to phone me back, about
possibly writing a missing persons article, so I'm starting to feel positive.

Thanks,
joyce

The International Red Cross may be able to help you.
There will be a Nepalise embassy or consulate in London (Britain
has close ties with Nepal), they could help you.
The British Army still has a Gurkas regiment, somebody there might
know the family, they are a very close knit people.
That guy who played magnum did a film there once....:^)

re -1 Thank Richard,

I'm still trying all avenues. Esp. if Tom Selleck's there :)

    Hi Joyce,

There is another avenue which maybe you can try. There is a
Software called VNEWS, through which you can log into the internet
network and there is a newgroup called soc.penpals. I have seen quite a
few entries of people looking for missing friends and they have had
    succuss throught that new group.

Also there is a newsgroup called soc.culture.nepal, where Neplase
students might be able to help you. And if they have the access to
Internet in Nepal some one might look for him in NEPAl itself. Normally
People are very helpful in that newgroups.

If you have any problem accessing VNEWS, just send me a mail and
i'll give you the necessary software accross the network.

Subhash,

thanks! I've got some info on VNEWS *somewhere* around here, but had't
gotten around to reading it. I'll definitely get in touch if I have
problems using it.

The latest update btw, is that the Consulate-Gen. sent a fax saying that
they can't trace anyone from outside of the country and gave me an address
to write to in Kathmandu. It may be red-tape, but that's better than
nothing to hang on to.

thanks folks.

128.9At last, an update!CCAD23::TANWild hearts can't be brokenThu Sep 01 1994 11:1718
For those of you who gave so much support and comfort, an update at
    last :)

I've had no joy from all the suggestions given in this and other
conferences, and had all but given up hope. Then on the spur of the
moment on Monday, I placed an entry in an internet group on Nepal,
and guess what?! I've had 2 mail messages from (you'll never guess
where) the US! :) One from someone who went to the same school as my
friend, who was able to give me a phone number in Kathmandu, for Jit's
parents. The second from someone who knows Jit's sister and was able
to give me her internet address.

Phone (and thus internet) lines to Nepal are kinda sporadic, so I'm
still trying. But what a start! Just wanted to share that bit of good
    news. :)

re -1

Chico - Thanks :)

Did you know that there are *very* few phone lines to Nepal?!

Anyway, I spent several hours dialling and redialling 2 phone numbers;
one off internet, and one which International Directories was able to give
me, once I had an address (off internet). But they were different numbers!

And wouldn't you know it, when I finally got through, the first Jitendra
was the wrong one.

Just before midnight, I managed to finally hear a long forgotten voice at
the other end of the phone. My stomach churned and all I could manage was
to squeak out "Is that you, Jit?" and he recognised my voice :)

16 years have passed, and we've got an awful lot of catching up to do.
So for heaven's sake guys, don't lose touch with your *special* friends.
Because they can end up in peculiar places with few phone lines :)

    Xtine,

Hi. He asked what had prompted my search after all these years, and
at the time, I didn't want to say that I'd dreamt awful things...
I dunno, just didn't seem right. So I said I'd found an old photo
which reminded me. Maybe over time, I'll ask :)

And if there's anything in it, I'll be sure to let you know.
