242.0. "Gene Cernan Joins DEC" by CURIE::THACKERAY (Ray Thackeray MR03 DTN 297-5622) Fri Jan 09 1987 13:43

I'm surprised, but I can't find a note about this.

    Here's the guff....

Eugene Cernan, the last man to walk on the moon (Commander of Apollo
    17) has joined Digital!

I was at a presentation he gave in Houston to the Government Systems
Group, which he has joined as a consultant on Governmant business.

He spoke about his experiences on the moon, the direction of the
space effort, where he feels mankind is going, etc. and he invited
    questions from the floor.

The presentation was videotaped, so I guess a call to GSG might
    be able to unhook it.....>

As a GSG employee, I will see what I can do in this effort. I work
in the TEMPEST development engineering group located in MKO2 and
have had the pleasure of meeting with Grace Hopper, in the light
of the development that we do here.

If Cernan *is* a consultant to GSG, I will no doubt have opportunity
to meet with him at some time (can't wait!)

    I will keep you posted.

That sounds like it would be very interesting, I mean to have someone
that has actually been in space and to the moon in this conference
to tell all what it's like.

I've been reading this conference for about month now and have
found it very informative. I don't know as much about the topic as most
of you seem to (I would like to know much more) but it's been fun
and interesting reading. I would give my right arm to have a chance
to go into space and at 22 years old I still might get it. I hope
this country will start pushing harder and harder to become a master
of this unknown environment and someday be able to travel to distant
worlds. (hopefully in my life time)

I have always admired how optimistic and intelligent Gene Cernan's
observations were when ABC-TV used to interview him for his thoughts
on the Space Shuttle missions. Of course, I always thought that
Steve Austin was the last man on the Moon. :^)

Welcome to DEC Gene! I've had the chance to visit the Cernan Space
Center at Triton College out here in the suburbs of Chicago. It is
quite amazing a museum for a small school. They have his lunar
suit on display there. It never got dry cleaned after the flight
        and is quite dirty :-)

Gee, maybe if Gene ever gets up in this area he might consent to
talk to us about his experiences in the space program. I for
one would welcome a technical seminar about something "real"
as opposed to these "virtual" computers (I know, bad pun).
Maybe when Dave sends his invite to join the conference he could
also mention "if you're ever in the neighborhood ..."

I must also strongly agree. It seem to me that he has
probably had about all the questioning he can take for one lifetime,

1. I believe that pole number is in the midst of the MIS group downstairs.
2. I have been informed by someone who worked with Eugene Cernan (and other

So, I don't think it's him.

Stow, MA is his home office. I have a call into him to let him
know about the conference. He hasn't returned it yet, but he is
probably being kept busy by people just like us asking him a million
and one questions. When he finally does make it into the conference,
I would like to request that people not barrage him with questions
too fast. After all, we don't want to scare him away from
    participation.

242.26Interview with Cernan in DEC magazineACUTE::MCKINLEYThu Mar 31 1988 17:507
There is an interview with Gene Cernan in "Forefront" magazine,
published internally by the Mid-range Systems Business (Q3FY88).
It's a 4 page Q & A article focusing on what DEC should do in the
aerospace market, Cernan's feelings about his experiences in space,
and the future of space usage.

I'm not sure. I seem to have a subscription to it, though I'm not a
member of the Mid-Range Systems Business. You could try your site
library. The message on the back of the magazine says that distribution
questions should be directed to the editor.

242.30Cernan in the August DECWORLDMTWAIN::KLAESNo atomic lobsters this week.Wed Sep 21 1988 13:1013
In the August, 1988 issue of DECWORLD magazine (which I believe
is mailed to all DEC employees' homes), there is an article on page
10 about Gene Cernan and his and DEC's role in the aerospace field.
According to the article, Cernan "works with all of the various
sales and marketing organizations that are involved with the
development of Digital's business with the U.S. government and the
aerospace industry. Needless to say, Cernan wants DEC to get more
involved with aerospace companies. There is a picture of him in
the article. He also praises the role of computers in making his
APOLLO 17 flight to the Moon possible.
