1507.0. "Graceful Ring Insertion" by 31302::HERNAN (Peter Hernan Western RNC) Mon Nov 21 1994 19:28

I have to answer the following question from an RFP:

FDDI Devices must use the latest revision of SMT per ANSI X3T9.5 standards
and must support graceful ring insertion.

Is this "graceful ring insertion" a new function of SMT, or is this the old
multi-MAC concentrator issue again?

    It's not X3T9.5 anymore, but our products do support the latest SMT
    standard which I believe is at revision 7.3.

    I recall reading somewhere why we don't support this, but that it's not
    all it's cracked up to be either. I don't have any specific pointers,
    but do a search in this Notes conference for "graceful" or just look
    for entries posted by Paul Koning. I'm sure he wrote a reply on this
    subject at some point.

1507.2SMT doesn't standardize graceful insertionNETCAD::B_CRONINTue Nov 22 1994 16:319
    Graceful insertion is NOT a requirement of SMT. It is a vendor specific
    implementation detail. This idea has been around for a while, so I
    won't rehash it here.

    SMT is now an approved document, so the correct reference is
    X3.229-1994. This corresponds to SMT 7.3
