549.0. "DEMFA, no FDDI, no boot?" by AUNTB::DAVISST () Tue Apr 28 1992 21:03

Customer is running 5.4-3, was told "problem" applies to 5.5 also.

After DEMFA installed in 6000, it will not boot unless connected to
FDDI network (concentrator in this case).

    1. Is this correct?

    2. Is there anyway to terminate at the 6000?

Customer concern -- Concentrator go down and they have a heavy
    production cluster than cannot boot.

Can system boot with DEMFA installed but not connected (ie, terminate
    at system)?

This observation seems valid (risk of not being able to boot). What is
    our response?

    Thanks.

549.1Insert a loopback into the adapter socketLARVAE::HARVEYBaldly going into the unknown...Wed Apr 29 1992 10:289

If you insert an FDDI loopback plug into the DEMFA socket I think this
      should stop any problems.

Isn't this a bug?

Sure looks like a bug.

Inserting a loopback connector doesn't answer the concern about being unable
to boot due to concentrator being down!

    I'd say its a bug,..

but Paul,.. nobody said the loopback connector didn;t help. In fact
I'd presume from lack of response to that suggestion that perhaps

it did work and .0 went away semi-happy?

If the loopbakc doesn't work (which was going to be my suggestion)
then please let me know and I will bump the priority of this
    problem up a bit...

If the loopback works,.. at least there is a temporary work around...

Re workaround... I'm not sure, given the description. Suppose the system is
running, then the concentrator dies, or is shut off, or whatever. Then for
some random reason the system reboots (say, a crash). It happens to be an
unattended system. Normally it would autorestart, but it sounds from the
description in .0 that it will not in this case.

The solution at that point is to go over to the system, install the loopback
connector, and restart, but if the system is normally unattended that sounds
like a fair hassle. Still better than no workaround at all, of course...

	Ram,

Thank god, you caught this bug! Can you please
state what slots DEMFA can go into? This may help
other readers not make the same mistake. Is DEMFA
	documentation complete on it?
