I have a customer using an AlphaServer 2100 running windows NT. THey have an
FDDI PCI controller in it (ours). They are having trouble configuring the
card to send Ethernet II packets. They go into the configuration of the card
for IPX/SPX traffic and choose frame type of Ethernet II. When they do this,
the Novell Server (on the Ethernet side - across a CISCO CDDI/FDDI bridge)
complains about 802.3 packets being sent. A scope on the Ethernet segment
actually shows a bunch of 802.3 packets being sent across.
The customers basic complaint is that the FDDI Card is not sending Ethernet
II packets. My question to them was - what did the frames look like on the
FDDI side - they are looking at packets so far down the line who knows what
is coming out of the FDDI card.
My question here is has anyone seen any problem in doing this? Does
something possibly need to be defined at the CISCO device or is it purely a
passive device - Enet II in, Enet II out? They are using the driver that
ships with the Windows NT Server 3.51 software - which is the latest version
they can find.

ETHERNET_II is the Novell frame type for DIX (Ethernet V2) frames on
Ethernet. The corresponding Novell frame type on FDDI is called
FDDI_SNAP. If you're running FDDI on Windows NT, try to configure
IPX for "auto" or "SNAP" or "802.2 SNAP".
I'm sure this is a simple configuration problem. I've heard of no
reports of IPX problems on FDDI under Windows NT.
