112.0. "FDDI Protocol Analyzer?" by CSC32::N_HENDERSON (Internal Network Support, CSC/CS) Wed Aug 15 1990 22:01

Could anyone tell us whether there is an FDDI Protocol Analyzer on the
    market?

We are working with several potential vendors of such products. For
further information, contact John Mollica (BAGELS::MOLLICA).

112.2Thank youCSC32::N_HENDERSONInternal Network Support, CSC/CSFri Aug 17 1990 13:3011

Thank you very much for the prompt reply. As you can see by Chuck's
next note, we got around it this time by placing a sniffer at the
ethernet connection to the bridge, but had to go through various
reconfigurations to obtain sufficient clues to resolve the problem.

If anyone is waiting for encouragement to promptly produce an FDDI
analyzer, let this be such a plea.

    Randy,

Is this an actual protocol analyzer or a TDR?

I don't have the stuff in front of me , I'm at home right now . It
looks like a bit error rate tester , plus some more , send me a fax
number or a mail stop and I'll ship the info to you .

112.6Any Analyzers Yet?DPDMAI::DAVIESMark, SCA Area Network ConsultantTue Mar 05 1991 14:3612
Is there a list of vendors yet that are actually building and selling
    FDDI analyzer/monitors?

The more FDDI we install, the more requests we get for such a tool.

Most would like to see it as part of DECelms/DECmcc or at least
    integratable into DECmcc.

    Thanks,

    Mark

112.7I saw one at ComnetJUMP4::JOYGet a life!Wed Mar 06 1991 19:2013
    Mark,
WHile I was at COmNet in Jan. I stopped by the Digital Technology
booth. They were showing a pretty nice looking FDDI protocol analyzer.
I have the brochure form them if you want me to send you a copy or you
can contact Nancy Klosterman, Mgr. of Sales and Marketing, 513-443,
0412, FAX 513-226-0511. Their address is 2300 Edwin C. Moses Blvd.
    Dayton, Oh 45408

I don't know if anyone in CSS or engineering uses a specific vendor's
analyzer, but this one looked pretty sharp.

I have found 2 vendors with FDDI protocol analyzers and a brief on each
    one is as follows:

    COMPANY PRODUCT
    -----------------------------	-----------------------------------

Digital Technology, Inc. LANHAWK 5750 Network Analyzer
2300 Edwin C. Moses Blvd. LANHAWK 3726 Symbol Generator
    Dayton, Ohio 45408
    (513)443-0412

    Tekelec ChameLAN 100
    26580 West Agoura Road
    Calabasas, Calif 91302
    (818)880-5656

Both have similar functionality as follows:

    - Full bandwidth data capture rate
    - Capture memory from ~4-20MB options
    - Multi-megabyte hard disk storage options
    - TCP/IP analysis support
    - 80386 PC platform

The DTI 5750 product attaches via an optical splitter cabling assembly,
ie, it is not known to any station on the ring and is only listening.
The DTI 3726 connects directly to the ring (like a SAS) but is viewed as
an optical repeater (this unit is the traffic generator).

The Tekelec ChameLAN 100 attaches as either a SAS or DAS. This unit
also runs UNIX and Motif and supports X-windows over TCP/IP. Tekelec
has also announced a Simulation facility (traffic generator) which will
    be available in 1991.

Both units currently run in the range of $35K - $60K.

    Regards,

    Mark

CSSE is working on establishing specs and qualifying vendors for an FDDI
analyzer. If you have a short term need, I'd suggest you rent or lease
the equipment you need, and post any observations you have about the
equipment here. As soon as I know more (like who is doing this work),
    I'll post the info.

112.10Any Tekelec buyers?STAR::GILLUMKirt GillumFri Feb 21 1992 13:3114

Any potential buyers of Tekelec FDDI protocol analyzers out there?

We're potentially interested in purchasing at least one unit, and
there's strength in numbers (i.e., larger discounts).

    Please let me know.

    Kirt

P.S., Our final evaluation is dependant upon the programming
capability working for our application (to be demo'd in late March).

The Cluster Validation Group at NIO has purchased a Tekelec ChameLAN. You
might want to talk with them. A good contact would be Mike "Mulp" (CVG::)
Pettengill.

Also NAC Technical Services in LKG has purchased one. Contact Chip (TOOK::)
Duval.

You might try looking into the W&G. There FDDI interface will be going to
beta very soon. The W&G DA30 was recently selected as the analyzer of
choice for the Digital Services organization. Currently the W&G DA30 is a
multi-port dual analyzer. The DA30 will do dual lan tracing, ie; you can
have one port of the analyzer on one side of a bridge and the second port
on another part of the network.

I will be beta testing the FDDI interface, hopefully by the end of next
month. With the W&G, we will have the ability to look at the FDDI and the
Ethernet simutainously and hopfully be able to track protocol type
failures. You can contact me offline if you want more info.

Have any DEC offices purchased/leased the Digital Technology Inc (DTI)
LANHAWK FDDI analyzer? I would be interested in how it compares to the
    Tekelec Chamelon and W&G DA30.

112.15CSC32::B_GOODWINLookout, the Democrats are back....:(Mon Nov 16 1992 18:5830
I finally received the FDDI boards for the W&G DA30 Protocol Analyzer. I havn't
played with them to much, but the following is a short discription on what it
does.

The FDDI Interface allows you to monitor and generate traffic on an FDDI ring.
The FDDI Interface can be setup in one of tree possible operating modes:

SAS/Emulate
DAS/Emulate
DAS/Monitor

The FDDI Interface uses MIC Connectors and has an Optical Bypass Interface.

The software provides Frame Statisics and Error counts, PHY status, Line states,
SMT Status, frame summary's and frame details, through all protocol stacks. It
also can provide a ring topology map. It also provides traffic distribution
stats, ie, Frame Size, LLC Protocol and Average Frame Size. It provides for
traffic history, ie, frame rate, smt/mac frame rate and errored frame rate in a
graphical representation. It also has an event screen that will track network
events such as ring down, ring up, upstream neighbor change and station detection,
all timestamped.

These are just some it its capablities, I currently have a beta test version of
the board and software. My board doesn't have any memory and it has to rely on
the analyzer memory which makes it a little bit limited on a highly utilized
network, but the finished product will have the option of putting 4 or 16 meg on
the fddi board for packet capture.

One of our customers here in the UK has recently purchased an FDDI
version of the Network Sniffer from a Network General reseller.

I haven't played with it yet, but could probably get blurb if anybody
    in interested.

    Regards,

    David.
