964.0. "Sleazy BayBank ATM?" by MONTOR::KYZIVAT (Paul Kyzivat) Sun Dec 17 1995 13:31

The other day I took money from a BayBank ATM using my DCU card. I don't
often use BayBank, and their ATM seemed pickier than most. I think they
managed to screw me out of a transaction fee:

All I wanted was to withdraw money from checking. At the end of the
transaction it told me something about not being able to give me my balance
as part of the transaction, then proceeded to ask if I wanted the balance
separately. (I wasn't paying much attention to what it was asking so I
don't remember the exact details.)

I asked for the balance because it had not yet printed anything and I
wanted some verification of the transaction. But the end effect seemed to
be that it forced me to make a separate balance inquiry for with a separate
transaction fee is required.

Now maybe I just didn't understand the structure of the transactions at
this ATM and I could have done everything I wanted in one transaction, but
I certainly felt like I had been intentionally mislead to make an
unnecessary transaction. Is this just me, or am I right in being annoyed at
BayBank?

964.1Balances on non-DCU ATMSLOAN::HOMMon Dec 18 1995 00:1617
    When a non-DCU ATM sends an inquiry to the DCU computers to verify if
    there is sufficient funds to cover the withdrawl, the DCU computer
    answerback to the non-DCU ATM includes the balance.

    Unfortunately, it is up to the
    ATM owner to decide what to do with that information. Of course, the
    Baybank ATM could just throw away that information and really make a
    second connection to the DCU to get the balance - I don't know.

    I have used a non-DCU ATM in Colorado that printed the checking balance
    (at no charge). I have also used a Citibank ATM that DIDn't print it
    but could - for a fee of course.

    .0: Well, I'd be a bit annoyed at Baybank for getting charged for this!

    One of the nice differences between a bank and a credit union is that
    a bank is concerned about customer satisfaction in order to make more
    money for its shareholders, whereas a CU is concerned about customer
    satisfaction because they ARE its shareholders! The current Board and
    management (and I might add Supervisory Committee) keep this fact
    very much in mind.

964.3DCU vs BayBank ATM CardsSLOAN::HOMTue Dec 26 1995 21:0217

    BayBank has two types of ATM's. Xpress 24 and Cash 24.
    One type (Xpress 24?) is located at supermarkets, stores, etc
    and has surcharge even for BayBank ATM card holders. Baybank
    expects its card holder to pay for the convenience. If you are a DCU
    card holder, there is no charge if this withdrawl is one of the four
    free. So - in this case, DCU ATM card holders are better off than
    BayBank ATM card holder at BayBank ATM's.

    My wife, a former BayBank ATM card holder, has since closed her account
    and moved everything over to the DCU.

964.4DCU is sleezy tooTARKIN::VAILLANCOURTFri Mar 22 1996 15:307
    I don't use DCU anymore, but, do use their ATM machine which
    is right in our facility. And, when I withdraw money from
    my bank account, the DCU ATM does not print my balance.
    So DCU is just as sleezy as BayBank for not printing the
    balances and forcing me to make a separate inquiry to find
    out my balance (all the other Cirrus ATM's I use include your
    balance when you make withdrawals).

It might be that your bank is not sending the info. I not only get the balance
for my DCU account at a DCU ATM machine. I also usually get it at other
machines (First NH Bank ATMs in particular).
