777.0. "DCU attempts to prevent communication with members" by SMAUG::GARROD (DCU Board of Director's Candidate) Fri Mar 11 1994 16:28

At lunchtime Thursday March 10th Phil Gransewicz, Chris Gillett and myself
were in the MLO cafeteria at a table we had set up to distribute DCU election
information and answer members questions.

A DCU employee came over to the table and told Phil that DCU's "policy"
(which we'd never heard of until this time) prohibits campaigning within
100 feet of a DCU branch. Phil simply stated that Digital's policy
clearly states that we could campaign in the cafeteria. She then
indicated that she would call Digital security and Phil indicated that he had
no problem with her doing so. All very polite.

A representative of Digital security then came by to discuss the call. We
explained why we were there. The Digital security representative checked
the relevent policies and we stayed throughout the lunch hour with no objection
from the security representative or any other Digital employee.

Interestingly DCU HQ had sent out a memo to the MLO branch saying that
candidates were not to campaign within a 100 feet of a branch. It's
incredible that the management of DCU thinks that it can attempt to
regulate the actions of persons not in the employ of the credit union and
not on DCU property. I also think it inappropriate that DCU is trying to
get Digital security involved to try and regulate the actions of candidates
for the DCU board.

Pretty cheeky of DCU management to try to control activities in a
facility that grants it free space.

Methinks Chuck should take another look at his "Don't be a DICK"
    t-shirt.

How does the DCU manage to set these "policies" which extend past their
boundaries? What gives them the expectation that they can do so? Could
the board investigate this?

Jack, To quote a response that I recall you made to something or
other that Mark Steinkrauss had done, "The arrogance is astonishing."
    IMO, that accounts for it.

Well, I grew to expect arrogance from Mark and the old guard, er, board.
But I guess I didn't realize it had rubbed off so indelibly on DEFCU
management. . . .

re: .7

Maybe it _came_from_ DEFCU management?

On the other hand, it could just be the particular branch manager doing her own
thing. Remember, the management has taught them that all challenges to the
management are evil threats to their livelihood.

You don't really know if it was from DCU Management.

It could have come from another director, and disguised
    as being from DCU management.

     Wouldn't surprise me one bit.

I meant the attitude came from management to the old board, not the other way
around

No. What the branch manager had was computer generated output on the
thing they print out receipts on. It definitely looked like it came
from DCU HQ. It didn't look locally generated to me.

777.12Why am I not surprised?SPECXN::WITHERSBob WithersFri Mar 11 1994 19:2517
I am not surprised in the least. To me, this smacks of two things:

First -- fear. Ol' Chuck is probably afraid that he'll be out of a job
if the G3 ticket wins and wants to prevent them from spreading their
    message.

Secondly, this reeks of the DCU's self-serving arrogant attitude. I'm
not talking about the people in the branches who are generally nice,
but the folks who instigate Relationship BANKing, holiday clubs, and
inane letters saying that chidlrens' accounts have a status of "inept"
    or whatever the letter says.

PS, I am surprised that the "DCU Policy" said 100 feet rather than
    100KM 8-(

777.13PATE::MACNEALruck `n' rollFri Mar 11 1994 19:302
Maybe the DCU doesn't want a campaign happening in front of their doors
so it doesn't look like they are actively endorsing a candidate.

Then DCU should not have placed a branch within 100 feet of an area
defined as a cafeteria. We don't make the policies, we only live by them.
After all, Digital employees were here first.

Well, actually that was why I proposed that the board investigate it. Might
be kind of interesting . . .

I'm reminded of the movie "Zorro - The Gay Blade" when Lauren Becal (sp) attempts
to pursuade the townspeople at the town square to overthrow the greedy
bloodsuckers....

"Arrest that woman!"

"Wait, doesn't town law allow anyone to speak freely at the town square?"

"Yes. Very well then, arrest anyone who listens!"

This sort of stuff went on two years ago too. It didn't stop us then
and it won't stop us now. You'd think somebody might have learned that
but I guess not. Like I said, full circle in two short years...
