822.0. "Mystery of The Day" by TRACTR::WINANS () Thu Apr 28 1994 01:22

    I was in the DCU about a month ago about a check that did not go
    through. I had requested they run a statement of my transactions and
    when I received it, I noticed the check I had a problem with had been
    been listed as "paid" but with a $15.00 fee added. I asked the teller
    what was going on and she stated to me the DCU now pays all checks
    even if you do not have enough funds in your checking account to cover
    it, but you will be charged a 15.00 fee for this. She also said DCU
    will allow you to go into the hole up to $1500.00 before they do not
    pay the check(s). I am not sure if this applies only to just me or for
    all DCU members, but I believe it applies to all.

    I was talking with someone tonight about this and he stated this was a
    form of overdraft protection and in reality is a loan in which you will
    pay interest on if funds are not replenished to cover your checks. Is
    this accurate, if so how come I never heard anything about this until I
    had to investigate a problem?? Was anything ever sent out about this?

    And....if wrong what is really happening here?

    Overall, I have had a pretty good relationship with DCU although I
    think their fees are a little high and some could be eliminated. Also,
    I think they should simplify their loan process, especially for loans
    under $25,000. That loan sheet is sooooo long!

    Thanks,

    Phil

    	You can get an overdraft line of credit at no cost, and that
    	will prevent any unnecessary fees (from both sides of the
    	transaction) for bounced checks.

    	I have not heard of the "service" you described.
822.2Heres what I was told..BRAT::GODDARDMon May 02 1994 12:5111

    As I was told by a rep. from the CU. This service was given to a
    selected group of people. I was told you either have it or you don't!
    You can not apply for it. How it was determined if you got it, is
    beyond me!
    What happens is... You are charged the $15.00 fee for insufficient
    funds, however the CU pays the check, and you have seven days to
    pay if you go negitive in your account.
