853.0. "DCU Usenet Newsgroup" by NACAD::EWANCO (Eric James Ewanco) Tue Jul 19 1994 14:59

There is now a Digital Credit Union newsgroup, alt.digital.dcu, which has
been created for the discussion of DCU and the recent events. This newsgroup
is worldwide and accessible to all DCU members, within and without Digital.

Here is a copy of article #3.

Well first I'd likt to thank Mark Buda for getting this newsgroup started.

As everybody can see from their last DCU statement I, along with Phil
Gransewicz and Chris Fillmore-Gillett, am running in the rerun of the
DCU Board Election.

In the next few weeks you will be hearing a lot more from us. Suffice to
say we
still believe in all the principles we stood for in the original election.
We will be
working hard to get our word out. What would really help is people who
are willing to help spread the word to people within Digital (our access
is
not as good as it used to be!). I implore anybody that would like to
actively
help to get us elected to drop one or all of us a mail message. I'm at
dgarrod@aol.com, Phil is at gransewicz@aol.com and Chris is at
cgillett@aol.com.

Here's to a Credit Union that will have a Real Credit Union Philosophy and
not
that of a fee charging bank.

See you all on the campaign trail.

You need a news reader. See the CLO::VNEWS (character-cell based for VMS)
or UFP::XRN (GUI based for Unix or VMS) notesfiles.

You can even read it with a Web browser, such as Mosaic or
        Lynx. The URL is news:alt.digital.dcu

This newsgroup needs to be "primed" by some of the recent
communications from the DCU, such as the new election rules,
the letter from DCU counsel, etc.

I could easily do it (as could anybody else here), but I'm
not sure of the propriety of taking something I have *only*
seen in internal Digital sources (mostly this notes
conference) and copying it to an external newsgroup.

Knowing that the people getting weather map feeds were charged with misuse of
digital resources, could any 3G supporter feel secure getting feeds off the
internet? what will be the next excuss?

Considering what else my news server carries, alt.digital.dcu is not worth
a second thought.

I'm not sure exactly what you're saying.

But for those of us who are technically challenged and uninterested in
hitchhiking on the info highway, is there a means of reproducing this
DCU newsgroup stuff in this conference, or is that the whole issue?

One could (with some effort) cause the postings of alt.digital.dcu to
be directed into this conference. But that would be readonly. You
can use Mosaic or Lynx to read alt.digital.dcu as well.

As for objections to the act of carrying/reading/postnig re alt.digital.dcu,
considering the stuff in alt.sex.* and alt.binaries.*, alt.digital.dcu is
a paragon of virtue.

For the benefit of the Notes-aholic (or News-impaired) I set
up a notes conference that mirrors alt.digital.dcu using the
        NEWS-NOTES tool.

        It can be found at:

        	lgp30::DKA400:[NEWS-NOTES]DCU-NEWSGROUP

Supposedly I set this up properly so that replies to notes
are in turn posted to news, but I haven't tested it!

Is this not current? There are indications in this conference (DCU) that
various discussions are currently taking place in alt.digital.dcu,
however there's little evidence of that in the "mirror".

And now the mirror conference is write-locked, after some of the stuff that
was hidden here was posted there (from outside), and then hidden.

Please advise me when Digital Management and DEFCU management decide to release
all of us from the Soviet Union.

Is the alt.digital.dcu newsgroup open to anyone with the hardware to access
it, or only to DCU members? I would prefer that it be members-only, but I don't
know if Usenet has a facility for this, as NOTES does. And it probably doesn't
matter, but I'm curious.
853.14NETRIX::thomasThe Code WarriorMon Aug 15 1994 23:002
Anyone who receives can read it or post it. And there is no way to tighten it
up with involving a moderator but that won't happen so don't worry about it.

Actually, as far as I can tell by checking using a news
reader, the mirror was current during this period. In spite
of all the talk about alt.digital.dcu, it has actually seen
very few postings. (Since you wrote your note a few more
major postings came in, and the mirror reflects that.)

One big question I have is that since Digital has declared
that it will enforce the DCU's "quiet period" in all
corporate electronic media, does this include the mirror?

Does this Digital-imposed enforcement of the DCU quiet period
even apply to the alt.digital.dcu newsgroup itself, when
distributed by internal news servers and accessed by internal
news readers? Will the administrators of news servers be
required to exclude alt.digital.dcu from service during the
        quiet period?

Will Digital carry this policy further and enforce the
policies of other independent organizations to which large
numbers of Digital employees belong? For example, will
Digital enforce the election rules of the IEEE on Digital's
        internal media?
