970.0. "Can I use other printers of check with DCU?" by 11773::KADOW () Wed Jan 24 1996 13:55

This may be a very simple question but I need it answered,
can I use other printers of checks instead of DCU and will
the DCU accept them? I am thinking of using Quicken to
print my checks but I want to make sure they are acceptable.

    thanks, Paul

    you start with is important.

I've been using non-DCU checks since I opened my account, including Quicken-
printed checks. Never a problem.

Do these "other" checks have the computer-readable numbers at the bottom?
If not, doesn't this make more work for the check processing company (which
may not be DCU)?

free checks as well as 8 free network ATM transactions.

    Absolutely ...

The numbers are called MICR coding ... Magnetic Ink Character Recognition

If the cheque printers didn't use MICR, the clearing system would run
them out of business in a hurry ...

Beware that if you get cheques where the density of the ink does not
seem uniformly dark, then send them back. Also, beware that magnetic
rubber (like all those cute fridge magnets) can "erase" the magnetic ink
and rendering a cheque unreadable. Pass too many like that and the
bank may get bent out of shape!

I've used Current and Checks in the Mail and had no problems with
    either.

    re .5 and free ATM's

Have had my account for a while now, and have 4 freebies...does this
mean that mine have been increased to 8? Or, is it just a special
'enticement' for a while? Forgive me if this is old news, but I've
not been keeping up with my reading.....overwhelmed with it all!!

    Thanks,

970.8rules have changed...SLOAN::HOMFri Mar 15 1996 10:4411
The 8 free ATM transactions and free checks mentioned in .5 is not a
"limited time" offer. It is a permanent change.

It is permanent in the sense that the Board and DCU mgmt has NO plans
to decrease the number. Of course, it is hard to predict what things
will be like beyond the next 2-3 years. (Don't read too much into this
paragraph - I just don't want someone to point to this note in 5 years
    and say.....)
