1972.0. "CTL3D32.DLL wrong version" by TROOA::ras024p09.tro.dec.com::Andrew () Fri Jan 31 1997 17:31

G'day

I can't seem to find any explicit reference to this error, I hope someone can
help.

We have TL 2.7 installed on Windows 95. The customer is also using the
Microsoft Suite of products. In order to establish the integratability of the
two, we installed the Word and Excel T/L integration options.

Since we have installed the integration options, we now get the following
error when Word or Excel starts:

"This application uses CTL3D32.DLL which is not the correct version. This
version of CTL3D32.DLL is designed only for Windows NT systems"

Is this as obvious as it indicates?
Is there another version of this file kicking around?
Where can I get it from?
Why did I get this error in the first place?

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,

I ran into this problem a long time ago. I had the info about it
on my desktop and I just finally deleted it because the problem
never seemed to come up. So now, of course, it happens to someone
and I can't remember what the solution was! :-( The person who
helped solve the problem is no longer with DEC, oops DIGITAL, oops
they still called it Digital when he was here.

Can you get the DOS date and size info for the CTL3D32.DLL? Also,
can you get version info from the Properties. Plus make sure it
isn't on your PC in more than one directory.

You're using Word 95 right?

Was TL 2.7 installed over 2.5? Were there any FT baselevels of
2.7 on that PC?

Bob

I ran into this problem as well. I don't know what application
is putting down that incorrect version of CTL3D32.DLL, but I think
if you take the one off of the TeamLinks kit, you should be all set.

We do install that DLL if we think we need to, but only if the one
we have on our kit is newer than the one on the system. The one
that's causing you a problem is newer.

The one on the TeamLinks kit will be compressed, so you'll have
to expand it. And as Bob said, check to make sure you don't have
more than one version. The file should be in the windows\system
area.

Thanks for the direction.

BTW, There are no upgrades happening here. Virgin installs of Windows 95,
Office 95 and TeamLinks 2.7. No FieldTest, upgrades or nothing.

As I mentioned (maybe I didn't) TeamLinks was actually installed before
Office. Then Office, then T/L. Then I went back and re-did the T/L setup
specifying only the integration object.

This error did NOT occur until AFTER I installed the Word/Excel integration.
This might imply that T/L is where the file came from..??

Anyhew, I will check the date/size/version and make sure there aren't multiple
copies kicking around. (Forgot to look for that). I'll also pull the DLL from
the T/L CD and see if that resolves the problem.

It might be tomorrow before I get the info back. Either way, I'll post a note
here for future reference.

Many Thanks,

Well, let us know what you find when you check the versions, multiple
copies etc.. Hopefully you'll find that the one that's causing the
problem is not from the TL kit. The reason the problem might not have
shown up until the integration was installed is because the integration
uses this file. So, it might have been the wrong one, but no one else
was trying to use it? Just a guess.

Anyhow, let us know what you find.

1972.5CTL3D.DLL NOT FOUNDVMSNET::P_BUNGARDB^) Mon Feb 03 1997 16:3331

I was attempting to install Teamlinks Office v2.7 on my
Win95 system when a dialog box poped up saying the
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\CTL3D.DLL could not be found.

I did not cancel the installation, but instead right-clicked on
the START button to bring up the FIND utility. I searched the
    entire Drive C: and found a CTL3D.DLL, version 2.04, of 20,976
bytes in a directory where I had installed a utility named
    WINTALK

In the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ directory, if found a FOLDER of all
    things, named CTL3D.DLL !?!?!

I tried deleting the CTL3D.DLL folder and continuing with the
TL install. No luck, same error. I tried copying a CTL3D.DLL
from another system running TL v2.7, over the top of the existing
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\CTL3D.DLL

I didn't get an error, but now the CTL3D.DLL file showed up as
being zero bytes in size ??!?! I deleted this zero byte file,
and did the COPY A:CTL3D.DLL C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\CTL3D.DLL
command again. This time I had a 26,768 byte, version 2.31.000
    file in the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\ directory.

I clicked on the RETRY button for the TL0 2.7 install, and this
    time the procedure completed successfully.

At what point in the installation did this occur?

1972.7Thanks - problem solved.TROOA::ras025p10.tro.dec.com::AndrewTue Feb 04 1997 14:3320
Problem solved.

Although there weren't multiple copies kicking around, after I expanded and
replaced the CTL3D32.DL_ file off the TeamLinks kit and replaced the original
in c:\windows\system, the problem went away.

What I can tell you is this...

Bad file: CTL3D32.DLL V2.29.00 size 26.5KB Aug 6, 1995
Good file: (from T/L) CTL3D32.DLL V2.31.00 size 26.0KB Jan 9, 1997

I did browse around various sources I had for the various products installed
and was unable to come up with a match for the bad file. ie: Don't know where
the bad file came from. (I even checked the Win95 cabs)

Thanks for your help.
