1244.0. "Mariah 31 info needed" by DPDMAI::CLEVELAND (Grounded on The Rock) Mon Jun 12 1989 23:04

I'm getting very close to putting an offer out on a 31' Mariah built
by Pacific Seacraft. It's a double-ender, cutter rigged, and seems
to be built like a tank. The folks at Pacific Seacraft tell me it's
built every bit as well as their popular Crealock series. I've gone
through the boat, noted my questions and have a surveyor lined up
    when the offer goes in.

Question: Does anyone have any experience with this boat? It sails
well and is extremely stable. Anyone know of little gotcha's to watch
for, sailed on them and have general info, etc?

I've re-read the note on looking over stuff before you buy and what
to watch for...that's great for general stuff, now I'm looking for
specifics. I will probably need to make my mind up reasonably quick
so any info would be a tremendous help!!!

    Thanks,

    Robert

I don't have any experience with the Mariah but I just sold a Pacific
Seacraft FLICKA I owned for 5 years. It was a wonderful boat and
Pacific Seacraft is a FIRST RATE company to deal with.

re .0:

We looked at a Mariah 31 at the Newport Boat Show in 1978 or so. My
memory is that it was a well-built boat with lots of (some optional)
teak both inside and out. Further bits from semi-volatile memory: The
boat wasn't in production all that long (which seems a little unusual
for Pacific Seacraft) and the PHRF rating (which I don't recall
exactly -- maybe one of the racer-types knows) indicates that it is a
fairly slow boat (as might be expected from the full keel).

re .0:

I found some descriptive literature about the Mariah tucked away in my
filing cabinet. The boat has a short (by modern standards) waterline
length and a fairly heavy displacement (about 16 000 pounds). The
resulting displacement/length ratio is almost 470 (very heavy and
comparable with the Westsail 32). The sail area/displacement ratio is
14 something, indicating that you will need large sails for good light
air performance. The boat should be unlikely to capsize as the capsize
screening factor is 1.70 (over 2 and one should worry about offshore
sailing -- see an old note). The hull shape is quite similar to the
Westsail 32 -- double-ended and quite full forward. The option list was
very long -- reasonable options would have increased the base price by
over 25%. All in all very much like a Westsail 32.

Just when you think you've found the ship of your dreams, agonized over
the financial investment and decided to go for it, someone else beats
you by 20 minutes from another city!

I think the Man Upstairs is telling me to be happy with my Kittiwake
    for awhile.

Thanks for your input Alan. I also called Pacific Seacraft about the
Mariah and they faxed me the original sales brochure with all the
pertinant info. Great people at Pacific Seacraft... Very helpful and
friendly. Kinda reminds me of the noters here!
