2275.0. "Olympic racing coverage" by KANATA::ZUTRAUEN (always lookin' to learn) Tue Jul 30 1996 14:12

Ok, so where has the Olympic Sailing coverage been? Neither the CBC (up
here in Canada), nor the US network has shown any footage - just
results - as far as I've seen.

Any one out there seen any action? What time of the day is this stuff
being shown? (are they too cheap to float a couple of cameras?)

        Thanks,
        pete :-/

The BBC has shown a few little snippets, plus about half an hour film of
one of the Laser races. The downwind technique of the top boats was
amazing., running by the lee, then heading up as much as 45 degress to
catch a surf on the short steep waves.

This morning they also showed the start of the last race, with Scheidt (
BRA ) and Ainslie ( GBR ), who were lying 1st and 2nd overall, doing match
racing starts in the middle of a large fleet. Very hairy !

Scheidt eventaully pushed Ainslie and several others ( including himself )
over the line and they were all DSQ's as the 1 minute rule was in force.
1st and 2nd were unchanged, can't remember who got the Bronze.

The BBC interviewer tried to get Ainslie to say afterwards that it was
unfair, unsportsmanlike etc., but he said that if the positions had been
reversed, he would have done exactly the same.

I hope we might get a bit more, with Brits with a good medal hope in the
470's and in the semis of the Soling match racing.

And quite frightening..... the sail was let out to past 90 degrees, to keep
the air flow from mast to leech - with a force 4 or slightly more, and
waves of 1.5 metres or more. If I try that I find the boat on top of me
with me in the water, and thats on flat water in less wind!
