933.0. "PARTY PROPOSAL" by NBC::CARVER (John J. Carver) Wed Aug 03 1988 18:58

    Ok, its been tried before (see Note #377), but here goes anyway...

    Is there any SERIOUS interest in a group get together/party before
    this all too brief summer is quickly behind us ?

    The party could serve as the kick-off event for the recently proposed
    DEC sailing club; or whatever other reason anyone can think of (I like to
    think of it as a "free" boat show myself).

    Suggested Major Events:

    Tall story telling
    Drink concoction swap
    Determine what a "real race" is or isn't
    Document the correct means to connect a 3rd battery
    America's Cup Debate
    etc.
    etc.

    Date and location will have to be determined. All else would be
    left to the participants. This should be a NO ORGANIZATION REQUIRED
    event !

    So, what's the consensus ?

933.1Sure, why not!AKOV12::DJOHNSTONWed Aug 03 1988 20:5512
    Good idea. Given the number of people in the Marblehead area perhaps
    we should have it there. I'd be happy to include Fat Tuesday as
    a party platform. It has plenty of deck space and absolutely nothing
    to break on it. Wouldn't be the first time beer was spilled on
    her either.

    I've already met Bob Bailey through these files and he seems to be
    a pretty good guy except for some repulsive personal habits ;^).
    Let's do it.

933.2The Party's Over...NBC::CARVERJohn J. CarverWed Aug 10 1988 12:388
    Well, it's been a week and there is only 2 interested "parties"
    in the party. Seems pretty clear to me.

    Maybe next season ?!

933.3Able Body Seamen (partier)!VLNVAX::DMICHAELSONWed Aug 10 1988 17:4211
    I am always up for a party, and I'm sure a lot of others are too.
    And I know SAILORS party! As for the poor response, I'm not sure.
    Personally, I was about to respond to this note when I had to do
    some fire fighting and never got back to it.

    Keep things going, You other sailors out there respond to this note
    and lets have a good time.

        If you promise not to call my boat a Hobby Cat, I'll promise
    not to throw up on you decks ;>) I could even be talked into taking
    some of you monohullers out to see the difference between
    apparent (two monohullers racing) vs REAL speed ....

        Let me know when you would like to try such a party, and I'll
    get the cooler rack bolted on again.

         I don't care where in New England. Just make sure there is
    a ramp with 5 miles to put my toy in the ocean.

933.5Raising the AnteCBS::CARVERJohn J. CarverThu Aug 11 1988 13:4526
    Ok, I'm interested again. To up the ante a little bit, and keep
    things SIMPLE, I propose the following:

      Location:    Misery or Cat Island
      Rationale: "Close" to Gloucester, Marblehead, Salem, Beverly,
                   Manchester, and Boston

                   Cruising distance (1 day) of Portsmouth, Newburyport,
                   Scituate, and Provincetown

                   Little or no effort to get there for quite a few
                   folks who access this file. My apologies to the South
                   shore folks..... So, transit time is NO excuse, AND
                   getting home AFTER the party is quick.

      Date:        Saturday, September 10th
      Time:        2pm - ????

                   (So we can finish vacations and avoid the Labor Day
                    crowds)

933.6Are sailors without boats welcomeSTAR::KENNEYThu Aug 11 1988 14:569
    Are sailors who are unwilling to make the state rich by owning a
    boat welcome. Seriously I would like to attend but give all most
    of my sailing time and money to a club. I have to check to make
    sure the clubs annual suck up to the local goverment race is not
    that weekend.

933.7I'll try to get thereSALEM::MCWILLIAMSThu Aug 11 1988 16:3310

    Sounds like a good date and place. I will try to be there if the
    weather and very pregnant crew member permit.

    BTW: By Misery Island, do you mean the backside of Great Misery
         Island ?

933.8What, me Navigate ?NBC::CARVERJohn J. CarverFri Aug 12 1988 19:1413
    re: .7

    Yes. The Northwest side of Misery. Although the Southern side isn't
    bad either.

    As for Cat island, we would have to choose the northern side (providing
    the winds cooperate).

    My vote is NW side of Misery.

933.988's the year???YACHTS::CORKUMI'd rather be sailing....Fri Aug 12 1988 19:1519
 Sounds like we just might pull it off this year!!!!

 Count me in. I thought Cat Island was private, tell me more.

 Misery Island's ok with me too though it can get crowded on a warm Sunday
afternoon. (Will it be this warm in September too?)

 Since we won't have a designated DEC burgee at that time I propose that we
identify ourselves with a pair of shorts raised to the top of the mast!!

 My wife and daughter may be busy that day. If so, I can take on a few crew
members that may not have easy access to the island. ("A Crewed Interest" is
moored only a few miles from Misery Island, barely enough to get the beer cool!)

933.10I'll be there!!!OURVAX::NICOLAZZOBetter living through chemistryMon Aug 15 1988 13:263

933.11Rafting UpNBC::CARVERJohn J. CarverMon Aug 15 1988 20:5611
    re: .9

    You are correct, Cat Island is private and we couldn't go ashore.
    I only suggested it as a place to "raft up".

    Not having a dinghy, I wasn't even considering the possibilities
    of going ashore.

    Fat Tuesday can be there. September 10 is the Jubilee fall series

    Misery for me. Keep in mind our 8' draft when rafting up or we won't

    Uh-oh ! This is starting to get complicated. Let's finalize on
    the backside (Manchester) side of Misery.

    Dave, its a "little" farther for you, which you can make up for
    by moving "faster" than us cruiser types :>) . Misery also offers
    greater mooring space and the ability to "go ashore" if anyone wants
    to.

    Still haven't heard from some of the other "locals" out there --

    WHERE ARE YOU ?

    Actually we plan to be there, but if the weather and/or waves turn bad,
    my wife who is 6 months preganant won't be able to go.

    It seems with the pregnancy that the same woman who wasn't happy unless
    the seas were at least 4-6 feet, and the wind over 20 kts, now gets the
    "gippy tummy" in the slop in the mouth of the Merrimac.

    By the way have we set a time for the rendevous? I am coming from
    Newburyport, and have to allow at least 6 hrs to get there, assuming we
    can fight the traffic on the Annisquam. If we hold it early, I may have

    Well, Misery Island is a bit too much of a stretch for me from

    Bay area, like at Block or Cuttyhunk or Newport? I won't be able
    to "organize" anything but if the fog lifts, I could be there..
    We could use a size 56 T shirt and a size 2 hat for a burgee...

    Fat Tuesday draws a full 8 feet and won't be able to raft up if

    JYC will be sailing outside the Salem channel if they don't want

    to the other blunders last weekend, used the Boston light as a turning
    for both the larger and the smaller classes which got there at about
    the same time. Only problem was that because of the course differences
    we were going around the mark in different directions!

933.40A great party - a not so great trip backSALEM::MCWILLIAMSMon Sep 12 1988 13:3846
    We also would like to thank John for organizing the party. We had
    a great time.

    BTW - How about next year we arrange for people to bring food, and
          layout some deli platters and munchies.

    Well the trip back for the Newburyport contingent was something else.
    On the way down we came through the Annisquam/Blynman Canal, and were
    planning to go back that way, but as fate would have it, the Railroad
    bridge decided to take a vacation that day in the way of a breakdown.

    After having gotten through the Blynman bridge and up to the RR bridge
    we discovered the problem. (Maybe it pays to turn on the radio every
    once in a while.) Well that shot about about an hour or so.

    So we then decided to round Cape Ann in a fairly stiff NW wind (with
    plenty of interesting gusts.

    Sailing up to the Cape Ann '2' buoy was no problem with one reef and
    the storm jib since it was a beam/close reach (although we were still
    somewhat overpowered - I only have one reef point), but rounding the
    buoy was where the fun began.

    As soon as we cleared the cape, the seas which now had the distance to
    build were in the 4-6 range, and our intended course to Newburyport was
    directly into the wind.

    Okay that's why we learn how to tack. So it was beat to weather for
    about 5-6 hours with the spray and the occasional wave over the
    foredeck drenching evrything. Almost makes you want to get a dodger.

    We had a great time to find everyplace that leaked. Two of the deck to
    chain plate joints had decided to open up a bit since I sealed them at
    the beginning of the year. The front hatch seal found a leak in the
    front-portside corner, and two of the windows I had replaced at the
    beginning of the year were not as water tight as I thought they were.

    Things got better once we got close to shore and the seas had less
    distance to build.

    Now remember my crew - one pregnant wife who no longer likes
    interesting seas - needless to say after this trip, I am now without
    crew until after the baby is born.

    Terrific party John! Wish we could have gotten there sooner so
    we could talk to more folks. But the guys were a little hungry
    after biking from Waltham so we stopped at the hot dog barge for
    a snack.

    Absolutely a great location and perfect weather. Although we've
    been sailing past Misery Island for years, this was the first time
    we ever stopped and gone in close for a look.

    I vote for doing it again next year. But next time I'll bring my
    portable running lights. We did find our mooring, after a couple
    of passes. Just as we hooked up and dropped our sails, the harbor
    master's boat went by. I thought we were going to get a lecture
    but luckily he had other affairs to attend to. Boy, when that sun
    goes down, it doesn't waste time.

    John -

    Great time - thanks for putting it together.

    We did in fact sail off into the sunset, lacking a motor (up for
    filter repairs) we didn't have a power option.

    And a beautiful sunset it was - but we were still 1 1/2 miles from
    the mooring with a falling breeze straight out of the harbor. The
    good news was that we found our bouy on the first pass through the
    anchorage and fetched it up on the second pass under sail.

    Let's do that again....

    RE: .43 "Steel Strings in the sunset..."

    One thing we learned was that you can tell where the remaining wind
    is by how it breaks up the light reflections from shore.

    "OK, see where the ripples are on the light from the power station?
     We'll coast up that side, then tack across to that dark bit in
     the middle..."

    Though I neglected to bring it across to the raft-up on the inflatable
    water taxi, my pennywhistle came in handy at the mooring when our
    air horn ran out of steam.

    Somebody ought to send a photo of all the boats to Digital This Week.

933.45REALLY wanted to raft up but...YACHTS::CORKUMI'd rather be sailing....Mon Sep 12 1988 21:4223
Yes that was me that left as soon as I got there. It killed me to stop by
with barely being able to say hello. Believe me, it's not like me to pass
up a free beer and some friendly converstation.

My plans for crew changed too late for last minute additions though I tried.
I also ended up having to be back in Beverly by 4:30 to meet friends for dinner.

In spite of the fact that I promised my wife that I wouldn't go singlehanded,
I'm glad I did and at least got to say hello.

Thanks to whoever it was that offered to jump on board to help raft up. It
was a nice jesture but I was afraid that I wouldn't be able to get out of the
cove easily. I also knew that if I did raft up I'd miss my dinner date and
I know how painful that can be!!

YES, WE'LL HAVE MAKE THIS AN ANNUAL EVENT!

    I would also like to thank John for putting this get-together in
    place. It was a real pleasure meeting other DEC sailors. I am adding
    my vote to make this an annual event.

    One more thankyou to John for organizing. And one more vote for
    an annual event. I'm sorry I didn't make it back out to Misery but
    by the time we reached the mooring and unloaded my wife it was past
    9:00 and the kids decided they would rather go home than travel
    back out to the island for an overnight.
    One point of info. We should do this around late July or early August
    as Misery is FULL of raspberry bushes, nice trails and some really
    interesting ruins.
