2005.0. "Trailer manufacturers sought" by MKOTS4::ABSURD::RYAN () Mon Mar 08 1993 15:27

I've asked in the past and I'll ask anew about trailers and
manufacturers. I now have some experience towing a Catalina 22 with a
S10 Blazer and can't say I enjoy it but can tolerate it twice a year.
Having sold the Catalina recently and having not learned any better,
I'm thinking of buying a Capri 22 (either shoal draft or wing keel)
without a trailer. Either model can be launched from a ramp with an
extender bar built into the trailer.

    Two questions I have are:

    1. Can anyone provide me with the names/phone numbers of dealers and/or
manufactures of trailers? I had a Load Rite trailer that was pretty
       nice.

    2. What is the difference in total weight between a Catalina 22 with a
wing keel and a Capri 22 with a wing keel? I'm hoping that the answer
is that the Capri is lighter.

    Thanks in advance,

    Bob

From the 1993 SAIL sailboat and equipment directory.

Wing keel 2'6" Shoal keel 2'6"
    Displacement 2,250 lbs. Displacement
                                        Deep keel 2,200 lbs.
                                        Shoal keel 2,250 lbs.

Of course these specks are for new models. I don't know if the older
models are different but if you want more info call (818)-884-7700
and talk to the Catalina yachts, manufacturer of both Catalina and
    Capri.

I regularly tow 25 feet. I too never really enjoyed it until I drove
someone elses that is the same size and found it much easier. As a
result I now have Air Shochs in my tow car.

It made a huge improvement. I am really comfortable and am towing much
further and more often. I have dual axles on the trailer and would
recommend that too. The old single axle was not nice at all.

A question. With that weight boat and the weight of a trailer will you be
required to have brakes. Down here in New Zealand the
rules are being changed and I will soon have real problems. My boat and
trailer weighs about 1700kg (roughly 3700lbs).

Re .2

"Air Shochs" Mike???? ;-)

Perhaps you'll have to sell the trailer sailer, buy a bigger boat and head
for Peru?!

for many years I towed a 22' on a Shoreline pulled by a Suburban... I
didn't need an extension bar.. I put the front wheel jack down, got a
length of chain, hooked between car and trailer and let the slope of
the ramp pull back down.. reverse comming out.. I did this single
handed 99% of the time without problems.

i did build an extender .. but never used it. From the dump 1 5'
square bar (hollow) of aluminum a trailer ball on one end and cover on
the other end .. in case I had to push out.. chains don't push too
    well.

Found a really good place that builds trailers. It's "On the Road"
in Warren Maine. About 5 miles off U.S. Rte 1 in Warren.

They bailed me out of an awkward situation a couple of weeks ago,
    but that's another story.

Very service oriented place that will build anything you want (that
they agree is safe), for the right price.
