880.0. "Ultimate Yacht Race" by CSSE32::BLAISDELL () Wed Jun 29 1988 12:39

My father has sent me a NEW LONDON DAY newspaper article on the Ultimate Yacht
Race scheduled to be held off Groton and New London Connecticut Oct 9-15. This
is pro-sailing and classes will include Ultimate 30's, Hobie 21's, and J24s.

From the course map included in the article, the race course will offer good
viewing opportunities from the shore; from Ocean Boulevard and Ocean Beach in
New London and from Eastern Point Beach in Groton. The racers will come
closest to shore at Ocean Beach and the start/finish line looks to be best
viewed from Groton.

In New London, they are permitting or building well over a 1000 new slips and
moorings, mostly in the area just up river from Burr's Marina. A trip to races
might be combined with shopping for a dockominium or condo in an excellent
sailing area, possibly the best in New England.

Since I can visit family at the same time, I'm sure I'll be attending the
races. For others that may be interested, I'll post a final race
schedule when/if I receive one.

880.1Ultimate Race article ...MPGS::BAILEYMay the 4 winds blow u safely homeTue Jul 26 1988 17:3817
    I read an interesting article about the Ultimate Race they held down in
    Texas last month. I believe it was in the July issue of Sailing World.
    One of the interesting things was that they set "gateways" between the
    marks on each leg. The boats were required to sail through the
    gateways on their way to the next mark. It kept the fleet reasonably
    close together, and made for excellent spectator spots, according to
    the article.

    They also had a GREAT photo of an Ultimate 30 flying their chute with
    about the top quarter of the mast bent forward at about a 80-90 degree
    angle. The caption read something like "I understand you're SUPPOSED
    to fly these non-symmetrical masthead chutes well out in front of the
    boat."
