Is it just my imagination or does this year seem like an unusually
light one for bottom growth? I've been checking my hull every week
and there hasn't been much to clean off. All the boats in the harbor
seem to have clean bottoms, at least the part you can see. My
recollection of this time last year was that I was fighting a losing
battle despite a generous coat of the expensive bottom paint. I
know the water isn't any colder. I jump in every week to wipe the
bottom. There doesn't even seem to be as much weed on the mooring
float or chain. Wonder if the lack of rain has anything to do with
it. Like less lawn fertilizer being washed into the water to stimulate
weed growth. My boat is in Marblehead harbor. I'd be interested
to hear what everyone else's experiences are in different locations.

Phooey, and I thought that my new brand of bottom paint was more effective than the old. You swim in Marblehead Harbor???? I thought only mad dogs and Englishmen would do that. :-) | |||||

I'm of the impression the M'head harbor is not the cleanest
body of water around...I wouldn't swim there on a bet.
...However I had a townie out for cocktails last week and
he said that M'head harbor IS CLEAN! They do coliform counts
there all the time on the beach near the causeway. He says
that Salem harbor is an open sewer...like the 6th worst in the
country. I hope I'm not spreading rumors. BTW I could see the
bottom ,at dockside at MYC, at low tide last Sat...about 10
feet down.
I know fishermen who wont eat fish caught near shore...does
that tell you something??

I SAIL OUT OF BASS RIVER ON THE CAPE. I HAVE BEEN VERY SURPRISED
OVER THE AMOUNT OF SEAWEED FLOATING BY AS WELL AS THE COLLECTION
OF ALGAE AND OTHER PLANT CREATURES GROWING ON MY BOAT. I TOO SPENT
A GOOD PIECE OF CHANGE ON BOTTOM PAINT AND USED CARE WHEN APPLYING
IT. I DON'T KNOW IF THE OTHER BOATS IN THE HARBOR HAVE THE SAME
PROBLEM, BUT I BELIEVE THEY ARE. I'M ESPECIALLY SURPRISED AT THE
GROWTH AS BASS RIVER HAS A FAIRLY STRONG CURRENT AND I WOULD THINK
PLANT LIFE WOULD FIND IT HARD TO ESTABLISH ITSELF ON THE BOTTOM
OF "MY BOAT"!
LETS SEE ABOUT NEXT YEAR. I'M NOT GOING TO CHANGE MY PAINT YET.
