552.0. "Used Boat Buying" by IMBIBE::BAKALETZ (Mike Bakaletz) Tue May 12 1987 16:08

I am considering buying a used boat, but very naive and afraid that
I might get "taken". Can any of you experienced sailors provide
a few tips on what to look for in a used sailboat. I'm talking
about a daysailor, something under 20'. I've heard of 'thumping'
the hull. What should I be listening for? What other tell-tale
    signs can I look for?

    Thanks for your all input

    Mike

See notes 289 and 291 for some discussion of this.

To stir the buy new vs buy used controversy a little I'll add the
following. For insurance reasons we had a condition and valuation survey
made of our eight year old boat last week. In the surveyor's opinion,
the replacement cost of our boat is nearly 50% higher than its market
value (which is all that the boat can be insured for). While our
investment in the boat is less than the (estimated) replacement cost,
it is considerably more than the market value.

As has often been made clear in these NOTES, the cost of owning a boat is
significantly more than the cost of buying the boat.
